  1. When I 1st went full time about 3years ago I'd charge £100 a day just for sitting in a loader or a digger on the local estate as a fill in when nothing ells on and they were quite happy with that and involves no cost to me apart from getting there which is about 5mile. Now I occasionally get asked to do the odd day on the forwarder or loader if a few wagons coming in for biomass and they are short handed but charge £160 and still happy also normally have 2 lads out doing something ells. Also get free tipping on this estate and get proper rates for all there arb work so worth keeping in.
  2. It is not good enough to give simple instructions that can be understood by most, you must give clear instructions that simply cannot be misunderstood by any! Montgomery I think.
  3. I was lucky enough to win 1 in this year's raffle and think it's excellent and find it has a lot of advantages over a bigshot in that it packs away much neater but I did have to do a temporary modification with some tape to stop the rubber flying out the hooks every time I took a shot. For high shots it's really made things more accurate and a lot less frustrating apart from 1st shot into a big cedar which sailed perfectly over the branch I wanted returned without problems to the ground only to find my climbing rope was about 5m too short once I'd pulled it up
  4. Was tempted, only problem is where to put the bait box and flask and I'd need a smaller groundy. Bit more economical than my normal stuff ;-)
  5. Shout very loud and hope? ;-)
  6. Get some chip sides on this beast and a cs100 behind, perfect fruit tree pruning set up.
  7. Yeh that's the iron horse in the 1st picture Iron Horse Sensative Thinning Job:
  8. Here you go Paul, the daddy of skidders
  9. Where the rod from the stop bar go's into the box on the top next to the button, check it's not sticking bit of wd40, then take the cover off and check a wire hasn't come astray. The quadchip is ment to be able to outfeed at tickover which leads me to think more likely a sticky switch up top. Worst case it's a sticking hydraulic solenoid. Keep us posted.
  10. Thought about 1 a while ago that you could remove the tub and high tip and fit a hydraulic winch and an upturned small timber grab so basically creating a mini clambunkskidder for long brash.
  11. Liked that and hit the subscribe button for future installments, that's not babying a saw it's just treating it well. Only ob is groundys need lids on at ALL times and watch the angle of your side strop, once it the gets steeper drop it to the lower D's on the treemotion and it'll feel a lot more comfortable. Let's see some better picture of the arm art
  12. Client wanted more off the edge of the tree than I originally thought so was almost dark when I got down and starting to rain so dashed to clear the last of the brash across a churchyard, slid on a flat gravestone so now have a sore buttock then getting my rope down the pully saver got stuck for the 1st time in months so back up the tree by headtorch to retrieve it, late home, wife not happy. Sorry to hear that se7enthdevil.
  13. As long as id get to keep the logs I'd say that'd do. No sorry around 700-800 + cost of tree but very rarely do a dismantle involving rigging with only 2. Job like that I'd rather put 4 on and be done in a day so less travelled time and bods to shift and chip as a big team.
  14. I think what you often find is a freelance climber gets more money because there are less good 1ns around and most companies have there own groundsmen as paye staff or the boss carries out the skilled grounds work so the extra bod on the ground is just that a bod to shift stuff so gets less as although necessary to getting the job done will struggle to command more money as more of em about. As for my company the lead climber who tends to do all the hi risk or technical stuff is actually the 1 on the lowest paid hrly rate out of every 1 on site ME ;-)
  15. I think the problem is definition between a groundsman and a ground based labour. The 1st can cut, chip, run ropes, talk to client/public, watch other people on site = pritty much whatever he wants to charge within reason. The second can chip, drag and use a saw to brake down big stuff to do the former two tasks and thats about it = whatever the local going rate is. People who bring gear with them.... Why?? As a business owner I prefer to only have my gear used on site so there's non of the well I used this then he blunted that etc etc, my job, my gear.
  16. Spot on round here. Some of the people who ask me to price work seem to think we should!! And a few "company's" around here do work for less but only on saterdays........
  17. You too, always good to meet people with the tree passion and i hope that the family business works well for you, certainly gave me plenty to think about and aim for!
  18. Not someone I've heard of either matty, might be worth looking up next time I'm north a bit.
  19. Ahhhh not good about carrs. Just go down aycliffe and bang on husky s front door there till they sell you 1 direct (I wish) ;-)
  20. Think the new 190 will be known as a 280, could be interesting if the improvement to the 150 is anything to go on. Ment to be out towards the end of the year, just hope that they do a turntable version. I know of both people who wouldn't have anything but another Forst and others who'd have anything but another as had countless problems, seems to me you either hav a goodun or a baden.
  21. Try turners at Northallerton as kieth will normally match online prices and I've had nothing but good service from them in all the years iv had saws. Also have a shop at piecbridge which is a little closer but worth ringing 1st as don't have vast stocks of saws at that shop.
  22. About 4quid a pair unless you get a box of 20 or so for less each.
  23. Towa gloves are about the best I've found for climbing and mewp saw handling but they see to make your hands stink after 2 days use... Nasty smell that's hard to shift!
