  1. Client wanted more off the edge of the tree than I originally thought so was almost dark when I got down and starting to rain so dashed to clear the last of the brash across a churchyard, slid on a flat gravestone so now have a sore buttock then getting my rope down the pully saver got stuck for the 1st time in months so back up the tree by headtorch to retrieve it, late home, wife not happy. Sorry to hear that se7enthdevil.
  2. As long as id get to keep the logs I'd say that'd do. No sorry around 700-800 + cost of tree but very rarely do a dismantle involving rigging with only 2. Job like that I'd rather put 4 on and be done in a day so less travelled time and bods to shift and chip as a big team.
  3. I think what you often find is a freelance climber gets more money because there are less good 1ns around and most companies have there own groundsmen as paye staff or the boss carries out the skilled grounds work so the extra bod on the ground is just that a bod to shift stuff so gets less as although necessary to getting the job done will struggle to command more money as more of em about. As for my company the lead climber who tends to do all the hi risk or technical stuff is actually the 1 on the lowest paid hrly rate out of every 1 on site ME ;-)
  4. I think the problem is definition between a groundsman and a ground based labour. The 1st can cut, chip, run ropes, talk to client/public, watch other people on site = pritty much whatever he wants to charge within reason. The second can chip, drag and use a saw to brake down big stuff to do the former two tasks and thats about it = whatever the local going rate is. People who bring gear with them.... Why?? As a business owner I prefer to only have my gear used on site so there's non of the well I used this then he blunted that etc etc, my job, my gear.
  5. Spot on round here. Some of the people who ask me to price work seem to think we should!! And a few "company's" around here do work for less but only on saterdays........
  6. You too, always good to meet people with the tree passion and i hope that the family business works well for you, certainly gave me plenty to think about and aim for!
  7. Not someone I've heard of either matty, might be worth looking up next time I'm north a bit.
  8. Ahhhh not good about carrs. Just go down aycliffe and bang on husky s front door there till they sell you 1 direct (I wish) ;-)
  9. Think the new 190 will be known as a 280, could be interesting if the improvement to the 150 is anything to go on. Ment to be out towards the end of the year, just hope that they do a turntable version. I know of both people who wouldn't have anything but another Forst and others who'd have anything but another as had countless problems, seems to me you either hav a goodun or a baden.
  10. Try turners at Northallerton as kieth will normally match online prices and I've had nothing but good service from them in all the years iv had saws. Also have a shop at piecbridge which is a little closer but worth ringing 1st as don't have vast stocks of saws at that shop.
  11. About 4quid a pair unless you get a box of 20 or so for less each.
  12. Towa gloves are about the best I've found for climbing and mewp saw handling but they see to make your hands stink after 2 days use... Nasty smell that's hard to shift!
  13. If you need any volunteers to further test your investment in UK conditions I'm willing to let you post me a prototype. ;-)
  14. Top answer to the non believes in innovative David. The THT is looking good and it'll be interesting to see the reaction of the masses once a few people get hold and start using them in more situations with different skill and experience levels. Keep up the good work and I'm sure you'll get to where you want to be.
  15. We pass ed 8 of them on Thursday morning heading north towards Newcastle all loaded up with heavy armer. Sounds awesome as you go past a convoy of them all pulling hard up hill!
  16. Only 1 grind only company round here that I know of and did get them in to do some for me with the theory of making a bit without doing much.... Never again! Probably took me longer to tidy and make customer happy afterwards than if I'd done it myself with a rg13. This is why I've ordered a Hb20 to do whole thing 1 go and I'll still hire in bigger when needed. Big 70hp carlton coming in for 2 days end of month for over 100 stumps on a site clearance type job and a few bigger stumps on a golf course.
  17. All depends on how much you pay yourself on and off the books and how profitable the business is after reinvestment. We get disability living allowance as my wife is primarily care for my son who is classed as having a life threatening metabolic disorder and this all helps pay for stuff so allowing me to pay myself as the boss less so leaving more to invest back into the business and grow it which makes me the lowest payed member of staff including the trainee but we still live comfortable and if I do want anything nice I just pay myself more that month.
  18. It's only been a week..... Don't say your getting the travel itch again so soon That timber wants milling as I had 1 about that size and cut it down into 1" slabs and it went off to a cabinet makers for a reasonable amount of beer tokens.
  19. Would be cool to have a timelaps of a picture a day over a full year to see how it changes with the seasons.
  20. At 5 years old your rope may be soft but probably quite ingrained with tiny bits of muck and grit which may add to the abrasion of the mettle, tachyon is quite soft so you could swap for a firmer rope which might extend the working life of the zigzag for a bit longer.
  21. And it's often a funny colour the morning after, love the stuff.
  22. That's a beast of a grinder Paul, just never loose the remote, £1600 for a new 1 according to orange plant last time I hired 1  Looking like it's going to be another glorious winters day :-D
  23. At least you have a decent sized chipper to take it, last and only 1 I've ever done had to be forced into a 5" quickchip = painful!!
  24. No it was far funnier than that Kevin, poor lad didn't know what to do with himself, sure was a warning to the rest of us.
  25. Filling bait box full of expanding fome was quite a funny experience. 4 pro plus, 3 laxatives and 2 viagra in a lads morning brew for turning up.hung over repeatedly when working on team piece rates worked quite effectively as a punishment ;-)
