Please dont get offended at this but things are definitely different North of the border. I not only speak from my experience but from a mate who worked for a sub company of Scottish power. I remember him telling me that the way contracts worked in Scotland were very different than down here. He said they got paid up front on jobs (we are talking 100k's+ here) and they thought nothing of it, it was the norm.(well it did change before the recession when times were very good and then changed again into the recession but thats beside the point). I remember him saying because he was saying something along the lines of "You know the way they say the Scottish are tight, well........" I always find it hard to take payment before even starting a job, and I know you will see that as a failing but its just something I find hard to do. Plenty of customers try to pay before they go to work etc but I always prefer them to be happy with the job before payment. Besides once they have paid me they are never getting a refund.

The aqualfells lasted me 18 months and thats twice more life than I usually get tbh. I have some stein atm, only because they were going cheap and nothing else.

Nice one. Looks like a fair bit of rot there. My suggestion would be to not let it all mount up on the deck, slows the job down ALOT. Cut and move, cut and move, never listen to anyone that says getting it down is the most important thing, moving it is! It's a good feeling doing your first big tree and job.

I once fell of the back of the truck and landed on my back on the top of jockey wheel. Missed my spine by a good half an inch, had some quite nasty problems with sciatic nerve damage maninly at most inopportune moments. Sorted now though thank God!

Yeah there not a very nice bunch from what I gather. I know quite a few people that pay to get rid of timber around here but its miles away from you so no good I'm afraid. Does go to show the regional differences in our line of work.

Sorry if this is derailing your thread but I would consider contacting all the local tree surgeons and see about picking timber up from there sites for free. I have a few, not many people who do this and it really helps me when I dont want the timber myself and just want shut and the job done.

IIRC an easy way to mod a 460 660 is to buy an exhaust from the magnum range. They have extra holes and ports compared to standard. They might not offer as much performance but its fairly straight forward to do. I did a slight bit of muffler mod on 46 and 66 but I think not enough to make a difference, think I will have another go soon ish. Oh some new piston rings on an old saw will work wonders. too.

Just wondering what good experiences anyone has had with non Stihl/Husky saws. I know most will be about to type "You get what you pay for, buy cheap buy thrice, save up etc etc etc." but just stop and think for a minute. I buy plenty of non top of the range power tools, ie angle grinders, cut off saws, drills, air tools welders bench grinders blah blah blah. Most of these are usually B&Q specials or machine mart bargains, they all get hammered OK not every day but last really well, do the job and on average cost 1/5 of the top models. So, are there any saws that do the same? There must be by now, they can all be total junk surely! Tbh I'm prob not going to buy anything else other than Husky/Stihl as I do hammer the tools quite a bit, but I thought I would post this so it may help others either getting into the game and need a start and a hand or for the more unfortunates, who have had a visit from the 5 finger tax dodgers and had there most prized lifted. You lot need to get with a decent bank. Ive never had any probs with mine Lloydstsb, they even saved me a few quid by telling me to stop paying for an overdraft I dont use! Always hellpfull staff that dont care what I look like and have no problem arranging overdrafts when required etc. The charges are another matter though:sneaky2:

You are duty bound and I think by law required to tell the electricity board before you do anything. You could possibly die of old age before they tell you what's going on mind! Or they might do it for free which is no good for you but great fot the customer:laugh1:

Totally understand what you mean about trying to educate people abit but we NEED people to complain moan and get bothered by trees or 99% of us would be out of a job!

Firstly I never lie to people or missdirect them and have no time for anyone who does. I just tell them what we are doing and why. Although they get a quick version unless I have a bit of time and don't mind going into detail. The last you wasn't to do ime its start to piss the local residents off when you have to work in the area. Besides they could be a customer of yours one day. Although it all depends on the situation they ask you in, its not usually a good idea to explain yourself when your swinging limbs out over the road etc7 You can get the odd nutter but in those circumstances no matter what you say will help.

Your right it is a bit of hassle and I can do without the bank charges thats for sure! But, when I have cash it disappears on nothing! Safer straight in the bank for me.
