  1. I need to yank stuff tight - would love to use stainless but would be snapping them constantly!
  2. Don't tend to biscuit much myself as you're leaning more towards indoor/well finished furniture with biscuiting. My tool of choice is the impact driver and 4" index bolts - superb for pulling everything together and pretty tough. Quick and easy to use.
  3. Great find!
  4. Liked the way you knocked the gob wood out on the last tree - halving it with a wedge then a flat surface to knock the other half out.
  5. Rob D

    Phew!

Look really nicely milled planks - very flat.

    Phew!

Nice work - but yes more piccies are always well received!
  7. To start with if you're new to milling don't worry about quarter sawing. Just focus on through sawing, getting everything cutting right and then stickering and if possible banding your boards afterwards. After you master this then you can look at quarter sawing - but really it's only worth it with good size trees at least 3 foot diameter.
  8. I'm not sure on building regs but also bear in mind that the amount of movement you get in a large oak beam depends a lot of what tree it was cut from and the straightness of grain. E.g you could cut a lovely looking straight beam from a bendy piece of wood - but this will have more movement than the same beam cut from a straight piece of oak.
  9. Could as said also be the sprocket (needle) bearing - the one the drive sprocket runs on. I had almost exactly the same thing a few weeks ago - looked at the needle bearing and it looked fine - changed it and the noise went.... worth investigating.
  10. I've just managed a 12 but I was having a 15 sec breather in between the later ones (while standing).... Would prob have only got to 10 otherwise.... What is the official breather time allowed Mr Bolam?
  11. Can you come and build one for me afterwards Jon?
  12. I do only a small amount of treework these days but when I was full time April and May were always the quietiest months as pruning work dies down and the hedges haven't done much yet.
  13. It's a good point Andy - if a customer comes onto arbtalk and sees your business it's easy to press on the name and then look at what else that person has posted...... something to be aware about really. Out of all the things I write in replies I only post around 40% after I have re read them.... once it's out there it's out there!
  14. Dam I'm sure someone off here contacted me about a container to use as a kiln.... hopefully they'll see this thread....!
  15. Their new chain is called 91PX but it's only a fraction cheaper - I don't think it will be any different quality - more a hobby style chain for the home user.... as Justin says prob not that useful for those on here...
  16. There's no easy way of dealing with shakes but what you're doing sounds fine to me.
  17. There's a lot of rumours as to quality of steel and who makes what.... but I'm pretty sure Vallorbe and Pferd in Switzerland make most files. Vallorbe make the oregon files though I think not the other way around.... The Stihl EZ file system is identical to the Pferd EZ file and I'd bought several of the Pferd ones before the Stihl version appeared which makes it seem like there's a tie in there.... It's almost like the Husky/Stihl debate there is no clear winner only different opinions!!
  18. I have a Peterson in Lymington... but let's have some more info and you may get more bites. What type of timber? What size of timber? pics? access? do they want a day rate or a deal on the wood? does the site need tidying afterwards?
  19. Certainly the pro bars will go a fair bit longer than x4 chains.... maybe the cheaper laminated ones this would be more realistic. I think Stihl are perhaps hoping people will change their bar more regularly
  20. It'll have the Oregon D009 mount looking in the manual so will take all the Oregon bars which are readily available.
  21. ....mint green maybe It's a bit of a funny shade of green - could you go just a little darker?
  22. I'd love to have the energy for it but chainsaw milling is enough for me!
  23. Can you give a few more details. For instance some pics? What's the access like? Can you get a hiab close? You said you can't fell but what sort of size sections will you be rigging down (in length) and how long can you fell out the last main trunk? Where is it - rough location? From that you can then start to see if milling could be an alternative or getting it lifted out in sections....
  24. Absolutely prime log for a chainsaw mill
  25. It has cost you a lot this time but hopefully these same folk will help get your name around etc... or if something else comes up they'll call you. Unfortunately free quotes are part of the job rightly or wrongly. Always was a slow time of year for me i.e. April and May when saps rising and hedges haven't grown enough to warrant cutting.....
