  1. That's nice and the colours compliment each other which is almost impossible to do!
  2. Yep there's never enough but you've certainly made a fair few things recently.
  3. Ha ha! Love the lamp - that's a labour of love to complete with a chisel.
  4. That's a great idea you've done by morticing in the seat into the upright logs.... not seen that before. I wonder if the seat came out a little then the back could also be done in the same way? Like it
  5. No worrys - a few people want the site left tidy but this then has a bearing on how much they get for the log.... If you had logs in a yard yep prob would be a few more quid... but unfortunately there's not many logs worth more than firewood. You either want very straight, knot free clean hardwood or something with very nice patterns, figure or burring and these are worth more. Rippled sycamore is the one to look out for - that's worth a few quid!
  6. I paid £70-00 for the timber and milled on site. Customer even helped me load it into truck and mess was left... was at the back of garden and he wasn't fussed. I find it really varies from job to job. Most mobile saw millers are not that well set up for cleaning the site afterwards.... the last ones I've done as contract style milling I left the mess but only after agreeing this beforehand.

    Show time.

I won't make it this year unfortunately .... got to focus on other projects but I went to the first and second one and it was great to meet people on here and have a few beers in the evening..... I hope to be there next year though
  8. Ha ha! They are all worthless Mick .....except the one I had off you which Jaguar bought for £50,000-00.... Next beer is on me!
  9. I have heard loads of these stories and although I profess my ignorance in a great many things they are 97% just that... a good story. It looks good for people like aston martin and bentley to say they paid £10,000 for a root ball as it then helps to justify the £20-000 they charge to put a thin slice of it in a car!
  10. This is true - there will be a walnut tree now and again that will be worth it which is why I put 97%! There are sawmills to handle the timber but quality trees like this one will be 1 in 1000. I know people who sell to the gun makers and a good friend of mine has been round Holland and Holland.... You have to have the right tree with walnut for it to be worth good money - and they will be very very very rare. I have milled about 20 now and have more of an idea how to value them. If you're cutting one down use this thread is it may be worth good money if it's the right one. Colour, sap ring and shake. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/alaskan-mill/39337-if-youre-trying-sell-walnut-butt.html Here's a 4 footer we milled - some of the timber we even left there. Colour not that great and a massive sap ring - but no shake. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/alaskan-mill/42073-milling-4ft-walnut-butt-stihl-090-a.html
  11. You have a 1/4" chain but the file size you need will be 5/32" max but even better 3.5mm - very small. 1/4" files are massive! You can buy at this reputable online retailer with a high standard of customer care! Products for the category: Round files Put in 'FREEPOST' in the voucher code if it's just a few files you want.
  12. Nice work - you'll love it! I found the NPTC courses really good.
  13. It's another great piece - but if I may offer a humble opinion I think the main frame would have been better in yew even if it was a rustic type frame.... Don't shoot me down - I still think it's great but as more and more people are producing stuff I think some constructive comments help us all to up our games. And it is just my opinion- which is not really all that important!
  14. Thanks but it's more than I'm paying at the mo...
  15. Ok - at the moment I pay FedEx £7-80 inc vat per parcel up to 10 kg and then a small amount every kg after this. Zone 4 postcodes are £18-00 inc vat. I'm happy, it works, it's reliable. BUT - when you send a parcel of 10kg to 15kg people don't mind paying a tenner post and packing..... ....A parcel of 3kg is still going to cost me £7-80 inc vat still no matter how it's sent. So I've set the postage at £4-74 inc vat for orders under £120-00 inc vat - even then on most orders I'll have to make up the difference. I think the problem is that when people just want a rim or few files they will be "what a fiver postage!!".... So trusting to peoples honesty if that's all you want put in 'FREEPOST' in the voucher section and you'll get free postage... But if a small bar and chain for £30-00 then I can't do it for free as what you pay in postage is what it costs me!
  16. Thanks Luke - I have a parcelforce account (had just closed it as not as good as FedEx). Believe me I've spent a long time looking at the options for delivery - it's a lot more complicated than it seems....
  17. I've just visited the Interlink website and prices are £25-00+vat up to and including first 5kg and then £1-50 per kilo after. http://www.interlinkexpress.com/content/product-services/dpd_tarriff_update-2.pdf I use a company that ships up to 25kg for £25-00+vat to £30-00+vat and I've done a lot of shopping around! Most of the chainsaw mills weigh 10kg to 15kg and can be up to 1.2m long. I get a good deal with FedEx for domestic parcels but into Europe the best they could offer is £30-00+vat upwards. Hence I use an intermediary. If you can show me how I can ship for £12-00+vat to France please PM me asap! You may find this is the price that people pay on high parcel volume i.e. 50 parcels a day to Europe but it is not the norm!
  18. Hopefully you'll find someone - too far for me to go...
  19. I think it is sort of based on fact but I have never heard of any or found someone in the UK who buys walnut roots.... If you had a 3 to 4 foot good walnut, nice colour, some burring then maybe someone would be interested in the root... You need to be fully set up to process a root in terms of washing and sawing it - I think they do it in places such as Kazakhstan and Turkey and in the States.... but on an industrial scale. Of all the talk about walnut and the fabulous prices and that so and so sold this for this ..... 97% is utter, total complete cobblers! Don't listen to it!
  20. Inside stuff danish oil or walnut oil - both cheap, easy to apply, no skin to scratch... I don't tend to use much wax anymore but you can wax over both these oils if someone requested it....
  21. Very tidy - something I'd like to try myself in the future.
  22. Had a lot of half finished type projects kicking around and so have focused and started to finish some of them.... I find Summer is the best season for selling and getting your name out there. Nothing new design wise but some cracking wood - elm (from Big J on here - if you want elm PM him!) and some walnut milled a couple of years ago. Done a vid on sanding and making one of these tables which I'll edit and put up soon.... have made a few more things as well which I'll also take some pics of.
  23. Thanks - it would be easier if it was a standard parcel size but all so orders vary massively..... I think I'll use post office under 750g and FedEx for the rest..... As said if you're ordering just a file or something similar off the chainsawbars website put in 'FREEPOST' and this voucher will negate any postage - not to be abused! It'll also give 4% discount.
  24. I have the same dilema constantly - one idea is call Andy Fellows 07973846364. He's good to deal with and perhaps you could go halves with him on costs and the wood.... 4 plane trees is a lot of timber to use for yourself.
  25. Ha ha! Yep there's plenty of people out there who've been told by a knowledgeable friend that their oak is worth thousands! Basically there isn't really a going rate as such - too many variables. Some trees are worth paying for but if it's not worth it to you don't offer.... I tend to clear timber for free most of the time....
