  1. I think it is a physical impossibility to get an even cutter one side then tother on a lot of chains i.e. on a 114 drive link chain there will be 57 cutters so will always be x2 lefts or x2 rights. I did make a vid on chain making if it's any use
  2. Ha ha! Did some 50" cedar planks last week with the return just fixed to a lump of wood - worked fine! Vid soon I promise - you will be lovin' it!
  3. Ah I think you mean the slabbing brackets. I tend to use a ladder still for the first cut... But otherwise some 4" index type screws work well.
  4. I just got a cheap clothes line from the local surplus place for £3! I have since used the winch 3 times - not had a chance to make vid yet but quite simply this will be a regular thing for all chainsaw mills in the near future. Will try and get vid up soon
  5. You can see how much work has gone into that - well done on the achievement - no mean feat.
  6. They will be here mid July
  7. I'll also get the 10" TT which have a smaller angle at the pointed end and larger at the back for larger trees - as well as getting the 12" in as well.

Ha ha! I've already asked them and they won't do it just yet. I expect they want to see how the market views them and whether they sell. Jon will have his Monday so he can tell us what he thinks of them.
  9. I don't know if any larger than 6" would be viable - I have the 8" Peterson mill with a 24 hp twin honda engine and it mills 8" fine but still has to work at it. If you have trees in gullies etc - an Alaskan chainsaw mill will do the trick.

I think it's worth giving a few pairs a go and see if they help. I am getting in a load from Sugihara - new on the market - they have rubber built into the palms and fingers. They do seem to make a lot of difference and as long as your hands aren't too big they'll fit well. Also machine washable! I'll post a thread up when they're here and you can give them a go.
  11. What a great looking tool. Looking at the info quite interesting as it is Carl Petersons son selling/making these... The Peterson swingmill was the original swingmill - and what a superb piece of kit - you can see a story here 12" AUTOMATED MONO RAIL SWINGBLADE SAWMILL In fact I still bought one despite the fiasco of the Peterson Skillmill - poorly designed and poorly made (I was the importer for these).

I had a quick look through this - and I can see what you mean but have to say when I read the following: "This project investigates the performance of one particular anti-vibration glove" They tested one type of glove? Maybe this particular pair were no use but this tells us nothing about other AV gloves. This article Hand arm vibration - Gloves and warm clothing is one of those pretty non descript and vague H+S writings that say a lot and tell you nothing! This sentence is a good one, "It is not usually possible to assess the vibration reduction provided in use by anti-vibration gloves, so you should not generally rely on them to provide protection from vibration." So they could be working perfectly but as hard to assess don't rely on them - well what do you rely on in that case! There is no alternative other than not using the tools that are creating the vibration. Sorry not having a go in any shape or form but I'd say that with AV gloves try them and if you think they work then they prob do. They don't really have the means to test them properly.
  13. It's attached with one bolt and then there's a little 'nub' that fits in the rail to hold it square. I'm going to do a vid this morning showing how it works.

Have a you got a copy of the article/research? All my findings are - they make a big difference. This from myself and others opinions.
  15. I am now stocking the K+H wedges so if you are after some they are here. Products for the category: Wedges
  16. Finally got a chance to try out the winch - only for one plank but was a good 40" across - in fact annoyingly too wide and had to keep backing off to nip the side down. Result - I would say there is more work in holding the throttle open than winching the mill up the log - effortless, easy - a joy! Going over the round handle holds the mill down. The winch could be better quality but overall - I am never pushing a mill up a log by hand again! Still some refining to do as this was just a quick give it a go set up - but this really could be a way of saving those elbows. It stows neatly on the mill as well. To fit - there is a long bolt through the middle of the winch, take out, slot the head in the rail - slide winch on. Winch was this one - Manual Marine Hand Gear Hand Winch 600LBS Boat Trailer Caravan Crane No Cable | eBay
  17. From another thread I saw that K+H wedges in the US were the ones used out there for felling/falling trees. They are light weight and designed to be tough. I haven't had them long enough to abuse but they look well made and their reputation is solid. You can buy here Products for the category: Wedges Read a bit more here Wedges - by K&H Distributing I will get the 12" next time: 5.5" £5-50 each 7.5" £7-50 each 10" £9-50 each All +vat but minus 10% arbtalk disc. I will have these at the AA show along with Woodchuck log rollers, Sugihara bars and all the chainsaw mills (will be on the Jonsie stand).
  18. I'll be getting these Friday - not sure what time yet. But I would say they will end up going out Monday and with you Tuesday.

Yes I got a few just to try out - they have been excellent. The only problems are: Only available in Large which is prob our medium as they fit me! They are super warm - so bit sweaty in summer. Bliss in winter though! They will retail £15-00+vat (-10% arbtalk disc) and the good thing is they are designed to be washable! 100 pairs are on next order -but a 3 month wait until they get here
  20. Dear Stihl, I am a sub dealer of your equipment (which incidentally I think is good quality). In the items I sell mainly bars and chains I would say I stock as much as the top 5% of Stihl dealers in the country. I sell at more or less retail price and so am not undercutting your dealers. My website provides more information than any other website (to my knowledge) on the products I sell i.e. bars and chains. I could commend your actions if I genuinely thought the move was safety orientated. Why not plough in more resources into better educating your dealers? A lot of complaints about the dealers on here is that they lack knowledge and they don't carry stock. I think people would pay close to retail prices if they had the service from dealers to back it up with.
  21. They look really handy - be good to see some vids of them in operation. Would it be worth putting a flat edge on the bottom so it sits flat and stable or is it an easy job to wedge it and saw?
  22. Mill a few of them up - don't go too mad as there will always be more wood out there to mill Try and keep your stored drying timber neat and tidy so it doesn't start over whelming you. Mine did for a while but I have beaten in back under control again now!
  23. It's a tricky one Oli - but I'd say timber milling, drying, working... keep reading, doing it and over time you get a feel for things... it's a long (but pleasant) learning curve.
  24. I'll be there on the Jonsie stand. Hopefully will be doing Alaskan demos next door. Will have on display a good range of all the Sugihara bars. Ask your questions about the Alaskan and other mills The new Woodchuck log lifters and movers - you will see in the flesh why these are so good - will have some there for sale. Hot off the press - a range of K+H felling wedges. Just arrived today these are the ones used by tree fallers in the US - designed to be tough, light and able to take being hit by an axe without exploding. Wedges - by K&H Distributing
