1. Ha ha - well played! I think you've done well there as the saws look in good condition.
2. Good pics and measurements - strange as there is none of the 'eyes' coming through on the inside...
3. Ok the boat is in and I'm hoping to get these Thursday so I can send them out for delivery Friday - but it will be close so delivery may be Monday if they take a while to go through customs. Thanks all those who pre ordered - prices are now up to full retail and will stay there (of course you still get 10% off these).
4. Let them dry a bit first - even if only for a month or so. I then use a dewalt polisher with variable speed and a velcro backing pad. Usually go 60 grit to get saw marks out then 120g, 220g then if you want very smooth 400g. I have not found any clear oil that lasts outside except - Le Tonkinois but you need 6 or 7 coats to last and also durapox - only needs two or three coats but super duper expensive. There are other oils I've not tried but the easiest way is to use an oil with a stain as this resits UV breakdown.
5. I think after any situation like this when the dust settles you replay the incident over in your mind - what could have been done better? Did I do all I could etc. But the facts are you dealt with it well and I think it's important to give yourself reassurance and a mental pat on the back for acting as you did and if it happens again you will be able to deal with it and do the right thing.
6. Great stuff - like the leg design as well which is the trickiest bit on coffee tables.
7. If you have the same one I got I have just mounted it - took all of 3 minutes! I'll post some pics tom but not only does it slot on the mill perfectly you can slide it up and down! The handle is facing up - but I think it will work fine like that. Have just threaded the rope through. Can't test until Tuesday though due to noise restrictions where my yard is
8. I mill with Aspen - yes it is expensive, no point in debating that well worn path - but I don't notice the fumes (and also I use their chain oil cause the fumes from normal mineral oil are no good for you either!). No headaches and no side effects now.
9. They will be at the arb show Jon and if you like you can flex some muscle demoing them! But they will be more expensive than the pre order price so if you want one at a good price order before Sunday midnight (tom midnight). Will bump this thread tom.
10. Sounds good - I have a winch bought as well so will be mounting it over the weekend but I can't weld or fabricate things so I'm hoping I can just screw it onto the cross member.
11. Ship is due in tom so will hold intro price until Sunday morning. Last chance to order your woodchuck log rollers etc at the offer price so if you're thinking about getting one order now. 40% of this shipment has already sold and there is a long lead time. Products for the category: Forestry equipment
12. Wow what a beautiful bit of sawing and stickering - very pro job indeed
13. Great sized tree - would love to mill that! Do they do much mobile saw milling out there or is it all picked up off site?
14.

They are 138 drive links .404 .063

It's a bit of a pain that bar - nose seems to get hot and chain tension seems to go from tight to slack but it will do the job.

Works best on the older slower saw, cheers, Rob

15. Ha ha! I was supposed to be in this - spent ages on the phone trying to get things organised with them - long story short did a full day filming (not with Caroline - they sent a free lancer down to film) - felling and milling a couple of dead oaks and making into a bench.... only to be told 'sorry but you are just far too ugly to be put on the television'! .... no I was told that in the end they would not be able to include it due to time etc etc... I had been promised all the original footage to use myself but nothing received as of yet (although they did give me £200 as a 'sorry for wasting your time' sort of thing).
16. Good stuff John - glad the bars worked out and I'll stick some pics up on this thread when milling that sycamore.
17. Happy Birthday Jon
18. The 12v electric winch is far to fast - is there any easy way to control the speed other than having the wire traverse backwards and forwards 3 or 4 times? I've looked at speed controllers for a 12v winch and prob because of the high current they don't seem to be available...
19. Cheers Chris - no in fact I need to do a chain for Martin (Burrell) as the chain the MS150 takes is a 1/4" pitch .043 chain. (And I'd sent a 1/4" .050 chain). Rather clever of Stihl as they then have the only chain that will run on the saw (and also the bar is theirs as well). I have just got a reel of it in so will list it shortly (and will post here).
20. I think you could set a hand winch set up for as little as £20-00 which can't be bad
21. I think you need to keep an eye on what is happening - if you come across a tough bit then the saw will bog down and stop and if you carry on winching you will then do a lot of damage. Hence the remote control that has a push button. Also putting some sort of spring in there will help even out the cut - if it gets tougher then spring extends rather than just trying to pull the mill through at the same speed. As it comes to an easier part the spring retracts pulling the mill a bit faster. All in theory of course but I reckon it would work.
22. Yes that would be good as you have a speed control then... would just take a bit of working out how to do it easily and also a few spare batteries.
23. I recently sold an old Stihl mill to a customer and he told me how he winches his mills up the log... I've tried winching before and it's ok but can be a bit of a fiddle. The system he set up is cheap and looks very easy to operate. The thing I liked is that the winch is positioned on the mill rather than at the end of the log or similar. Using a springy type rope as the line to even the pull i.e. he uses a waterskiing rope, you can position the winch in the right place on top of the mill to give the best point to pull i.e. given log diameter, saw power etc etc. I've just bought a 12v winch off ebay for £90-00 that has remote controls and I'm hoping this could be a good way to mechanise chainsaw milling. Plan is to: Introduce mill into log Put some weight on top of the mill (saw that in Will Maloof's pdf!) Have a method where you can operate the winch and to start with the throttle is done by hand Have a way that as the winch tensions it also applies the throttle (may be tricky for someone like me). But either way I think this winching method is a good one - I may try and get a few winches in and sell these as kits to go on your mill. 24. ha ha!
25. I haven't sorry Daryll - I have dried a bit, quite different from English walnut - but I'll try and get some pics when I mill the first length of that which I still have whole and post up here.
