  1. There's a lot of oils in cedar - perhaps just a slight over dose on them.
  2. They seem very good Si - if you do get one buy the chain from the custom chain selector Custom chain loops As I haven't got round to listing the chains for the 18" toonie yet...
  3. There's nothing quite like a swing mill when she's set up on a good size log and cutting well! Perfect for 8" by anything...
  4. Hmmm... not yet - I used one the other day on the 390XP and was fine although that chain only has a third left of it's life... It may be you have to point the grinder upwards a little if you see what I mean. When I next have it set up I will test on a newer chain.
  5. It's near Sherfield English, Romsey... so a bit of a haul for you. PM me over the weekend if you want to come and collect a bit. I'll be there most of next week.
  6. I don't think that long - I'd say half a chain... you could use it for a full chain but like a file loses it's effectiveness and gets hollowed out... Keep the old stones though as they are great for getting a load of damage off a chain that has hit something and also I've started using the older stones for dressing as well. One of the advantages is that it that it does not blue the tooth... you'd have to put a lot of pressure on it to do that.
  7. It is - but bear in mind it takes a few goes to get the hang of it and not a great tool if you're new to it and in a rush. Get the chain running freely but not so it's hanging slack, look carefully at the first couple of teeth you sharpen. Adjust if necessary and then you can start sharpening away.
  8. Not milling but just finished sanding this.... No prizes for guessing what it represents.
  9. Some greenheart milling today.... tough stuff. Has to be pressure washed and seems to do something to the blade temper as after a few cuts it starts vibrating and whining. For a fence for my brother - he better be grateful
  10. All here Rob and grinding stones as well... get just one pack of the 3/8" stones for the depth guages if you can - you can do the depth guages with smaller stones but a bit more fiddly and can leave them a funny shape! Products for the category: 12 volt grinders

    Whoa lol

If you didn't have these two clients that insist on it would you still do the refreshers? I think it's good really - when you take the time to sit down and re look at things you can learn a lot... i just remember always rushing around when i was a full time contractor - never had any time... this i admit could well have been down to poor organisational skills on my part though!
  12. Just done a thread on it here http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/alaskan-mill/57230-okey-dokey-large-cedar-lebbanon-milled-near-romsey-next-week-timber-sale.html
  13. I'm doing a meaty cedar of Lebanon soon - this is near Romsey. More stable timber, less interesting than hardwood but could do you a slab for £80-00 if you came and collected off site (not trying to undercut you there Copford as I think your price fair and this is knotty cedar direct from site!). Will he there next week...
  14. It's a bit of a knotty rascal - plan is to take the Peterson mill and large Alaskans up there. Can do a good price for timber bought in bulk directly from the site i.e 50 cube a time for £10-00 inc vat per cube... This would be for 2" by 8" or thicker pieces.... more waste and more work cutting thinner so will be a bit more. Can do some large slabs for a little more than this if needed or if you just want a nice wide slab of timber (more like £20 inc vat per cube for these). Please PM me if you are interested in any. I'll also be making some large picnic benches there - £250-00 per bench to seat 8 people. You'll need strong arms and a trailer for those. Similar benches to those in pic below - I tend to do the legs coming out at an angle now though.
  15. No worrys - it's a lovely feeling to use a chain to the very end of it's life and it cuts better and better as the teeth get smaller!
  16. Oh and welcome to the forum BTW!
  17. Top right corner where it says Private Messages and you will have to search the members list or just look in the milling forum for Big J. Tap on his name and it should give you the menu from which you can PM... he may see this thread and post in the meantime....

    Whoa lol

Would be great to have that again... just found this but only had enough energy to read the title! Whatever happened to apprenticeship training? A British, American, Australian comparison - LSE Research Online and the article is here http://eprints.lse.ac.uk/20909/1/Whatever_Happened_to_Apprenticeship_Training.pdf

    Whoa lol

It's a cracking idea...but in practice - would the employer pay for you to have the time off work and pay for the courses? Or would you pay for the courses and take the time to do them as holiday? Not shooting anyone down but like I said it's a great idea but in practice hard to work.... which is a shame. But everyone I know who is a tree worker is working pretty flat out.
  20. Send a PM to Big J as he sells to lots of furniture makers.... But as above - if you're making money enough to want to mill more and sell more to him/her you're doing ok. Myself I'd say around the £35 to £40 a cube mark but if in volume less, if taking defects less... always sell it as there is lots more wood to mill out there!
  21. I have the range here Products for the category: Depth gauges As said .025 is pretty much fine for most chains.... But that said as you start coming back into the last third of the tooth then you can drop it to .030... to do with maintaining the angle of attack from the depth guage to the top plate of the tooth (as the distance between the tooth and the depth guage increases as the tooth gets smaller the angle gets shallower so the depth guages need to be lowered a little further.....) I don't understand all the ins and outs - but something like that so please correct me if I'm wrong

    Whoa lol

It's a good point but I suppose like most things it's about compromise... the NPTC courses are pretty expensive now... so if you tried to give more info at the training level the training becomes more expensive... I remember when I did my training - was as green as grass - could just about figure out which end of the saw was the one you held! And I found it was expensive then and difficult to take the time off work... So a tricky one...
  23. Well spotted - I just saw that - but I still can't find any vids yet! I'll keep looking though...

    Day OFF

Ha ha - a true pro never knew that. Almost got caught when google updated and then opening a new tab showed what pages you'd been looking at almost like when you open a folder .....
