  1. I expect it just needs to be sharpened with a round file - have a look on youtube see if there's any vids demoing this.
  2. That looks a really nice colour and no shake at all - you got a good price for it well done!
  3. Here's a vid I did the other day using the Woodchuck Dual.
  4. You should get that done into 2" boards in a day...
  5. I was thinking that but I will experiment putting a spring in the system or maybe a couple of springs and also I think it depends on where the rope end is attached. I've used a hand winch before but I'd really like something that does it for me.
  6. Ha ha! I don't always get it though but I don't really want to be a day in day out contract miller as the elbows would quickly finish their trip to arthritis! I have just bought a remote control winch off ebay - only £90-00 - so will start having a go with attaching to a 12v jumper pack and seeing if this will pull the mill down the log.
  7. They will give some nice patterns as Martin says but what will you do with them after milling?
  8. It depends a bit on how much milling you want to do and also how organised you are. If you can show a customer a good portfolio of what and where you have milled and demonstrate what they can get out of their wood then they are more likely to go for a higher price. And it depends on the kit you have. But I'd say a big saw 076, 088, 880 etc, with Alaskan, an 70cc -80cc saw with small log mill or mini mill to hand. I think you should be charging £300-00+vat a day. You should be able to produce £600+vat worth of timber (and again if you can show a customer previous jobs). I charge £400-00+vat a day but this includes Peterson mill if needed. It's not just the day milling but I find it takes at least 2-3 hours to get the truck loaded (the day before) and saws sharp ready to go when you reach site.
  9. Just been informed that the ship is due in now 24th May... So will be a few days after this they will get sent out. Also the ones I am getting have a slightly longer handle than the ones I have by around 4" or so... better for more leverage.
  10. That is a fantastic little wee tipper Dean - excellent - I want one!!
  11. Good stuff Rhob - yes there is some nice ripples in some of it...
  12. All looks good to me - ref perspex sheet a lot of people tend to leave off the mill altogether.... Ref selling your wood - a tough one to do on a part time sort of basis - I have put a bit more time into it recently and getting some results but one of those things same as starting a tree company - takes a while to get known for it.

  15. Nice work Jon - messy looking job and yet it's been bright and sunny down here all week!
  16. No worrys - I thought it would start getting silly if it was just to people over a certain number of posts etc...
  17. Nice pics - making the wine is something always wanted to do - but you never get round to it!

  20. Weds got things prepped - sawed and pulled out 3 massive rings from the center - I'll use 2 but the third was almost immovable so firewooded... managed to get the top half off the log with Peterson - the first high cuts are never fun Next day on site Friday - early start and continued with the Peterson mill.... lots of sawdust and this section had a lot of shake in the right hand side... lots of wood though as well. Had a few beams out of it (x4 collected by Rhob the Log) and Paul from Goulden Hardwoods - his blogs are worth a read through - Hampshire Wood Suppliers Blog Index had a few 7" by 7" and then by 2pm had had enough and off he went. I finished at 3pm - so now got to pull the last bit of that log up and ring it up then onto the main monster in 10 days as am busy until then.... Have made a vid but too tired to edit it at the mo...
  21. Thanks all for the pointers. The client is requesting one in this instance and so a necessary evil!
  22. You'll be loving it Jon - you'll have to get a camera now to upload your pics using it! - am up to 4 sold - Jonsie will also have a full range when they arrive if you want to see them in the flesh.
  23. Front page stuff! I hope it comes up ok to read - you can press CTRL and then scroll with mouse to zoom in... I've just previewed it and you can't really read it.... Pretty comprehensive article looking at the Alaskan mill and mini mill.
  24. There is also the Woodchuck Quad which I am looking at now - I have shied away from this one as it has more 'bits and pieces' to it but will post up pics once I have it set up. There is a vid here BTW for the Timber Jack
  25. The person who makes these in the US The Woodchuck - The TimberJack - The Dual is a small company and these are all he makes. He is always looking to improve the design and stands by their build quality. Next is the dedicated Timberjack This has x2 feet but no peavy point or saw grip. One point on the hook but this opens wider than the Dual and can grip larger logs more easily. Designed to lever logs into the air so no more blunting your saw or rolling logs. In the last picture of the ash log - I couldn't pull this over but thought I would leave the pic to show what I could and couldn't do with it. Products for the category: Forestry equipment
