  1. yet again, this subject descends into petty insults and allegations. No wonder the Government can't deal with the situation...people cant even talk sensibly about it. Of course the UK needs migration, every Country does. What we need to do is look at other Countries immigration systems and have a controlled, workable policy. It doesn't take the brains of an Archbishop to see that the open borders of the EUs Schengen zone are unsustainable. My mate is serving with the UK Border Force in the Med, he told me people are paying between 2,000 and 10,000 Euro's to be taken out to sea and 'rescued' and brought to the European mainland...sometimes 300 miles from where they were picked up...10 miles from the shore. Somebody is making £millions out of this...and the EU wants it to happen. This is the tip of the iceberg...it has to be dealt with effectively...now.
  2. this is one of those debates which will go around in circles...some people want mass-migration just like some people want a Federal European Government. What I find disturbing, is how anyone who voices concern at either, is vilified as some kind of right-wing extremist. We all have opinions, we all have the right to vote (at the moment), exercise both and respect others different views.
  3. always a place for ladders, just as there is for throwlines and MEWPs. Its knowing when to employ which to get the job done efficiently and safely thats the key.I've done two aerial rescues in my time...both using ladders, as they were low enough to employ them. Now we never put the ladders away until the job is complete.
  4. we just call them 'features'
  5. the ewt assess trees from the ground prior to marking them up and giving us the spec and GPS coordinates. We then assess the tree during the climb and any cavities are retained. Any high scoring habitat trees are passed over to EECOS, who do a survey. Obviously, some high scoring trees still have to be removed if they are a high risk to the public...this is also determined by EWT/EECOS. I've done lots of bat-surveys for EECOS and have yet to see a bat...but we did find a hybernaculum after poking a camera into a hollow field maple in Hatfield Forest...its a good way of checking a tree prior to felling if you havent got an endoscope!
  6. by 'fair', I take it you mean 'fairly bald'?
  7. indeed, Graham 'ringed' that one up.....if thats the right choice of words!
  8. over extended limbs, some over adjacent buildings and a bridleway Sadly, here's one we didn't get to in time.
  9. ha ha ha!...thankfully he realised something wasnt quite right! the horrendous polaroid pics that were found there, found there way into various lunch boxes and window visors over the next week or so...gopping!. We're back there soon doing some felling...not a pleasant work environment
  10. 'm not sure my chainsaw boots are going to survive the new Pup! IMG_3905.MOV
  11. ah yes, another chance to use my meme.....;)
  12. ad a lovely old veteran Oak to 20% crown reduce for the Wildlife Trust...great to do some real conservation work and prolong the lives of these venerable old trees...
  13. we had to fell some Alders at a gay dogging site. One of the climbers turned up a few days into the job, after his holiday and didn't realise the situation... 'What have we got to do here then?'....'see that bloke sitting in the car over there, he's the Tree Officer, go and ask him what the score is'.......what utter bounders!
  14. its both, in our neck of the woods, most pruning is lopping and topping. I gave up moral crusading for Arb years ago, I give the best spec for the tree, if the customer insists on having the tree cut in half, I explain why its not a good idea, if they still want the tree cut in half, I do it....unless its in a front garden! The majority of our competitors, are only interested in cutting as many trees as possible in the shortest amount of time, BS 3998 just gets in the way of work like that, its all about speed, cheap prices and high output...£££
  15. Ha ha!, about 80% of 'tree surgeons' don't know anything different. Add to that, clients who won't listen to sound advice...and the topping will continue for as long as treework does.
  16. this is exactly whats been happening....it just goes to show...you've got to watch where you use mobile phones, what you say and to whom....when your a bad guy...
  17. the reality of this situation is this, taking decisive action against these people, would damage political careers in todays PC Britain. These people WILL carry out terrorist attacks or train others to do so. At some point, the number of people killed or maimed, will damage political careers - unless decisive action is taken...until the balance tips...our Leaders will do nothing. No happy endings here, people will die unnecessarily in the UK...hope and pray its none of our family or friends -
  18. day rates havent gone up for years....climbers pay hasn't gone up much either...groundies pay has gone up dramatically over the years. I started of with a local firm on £30 a day in 1994...our groundies are on £80 to £100 a day depending on experience these days...more if they bring a bit more to the party. Upping dayrates to give well deserved pay rises can cause a rapid drop in the number of jobs won...and less work...thats the way it rolls
  19. a mate of mine had a groundie called 'Frank'. Frank is the source of many stories...even after 20 odd years. He was once asked if he would drive down to the shops to get cold drinks for the crew, on a hot summers day. He asked everyone what they wanted. One of the climbers asked for 20 B and H and a box of matches...'what if they haven't got B and H?' ...'get me anything' said the climber. He duly arrived a short time later and gave the climber a pork pie and a box of matches....'whats this?'he asked ...'you said if they havent got B and H, get me anything'
  20. The fella I bought it from, adapted one of those plant trailers they put compactors on. We just gave it a lick of paint...very handy. The Greenmech trailer is somewhat over priced.
  21. the rear AV on my 2511, a chainbrake band on my 8002 and the throttle pin on my 501...Echo should get a UK stock of spares squared away ASAP, great saws, but for smaller firms and people starting up, quick turnaround on saw repairs, are definitely a reason for purchasing a machine. If these were Husky or Stihl machines, I would be sorted within a week.
  22. I agree Skyjack...I've got enough work not to have to wait 3 months to be paid....its stressful enough as it is paying out wages and plant hire costs before being paid for big jobs. I've also asked for 50% up front on big jobs from slow payers...it helps a lot when you've got freelancers and MEWPs on hire.
  23. I know what would happen if we hadnt left the EU (we can't leave Europe...we are here!). We would have the Euro as our currency, KM instead of miles and we would be part of the Schengen zone...all by 2020. Also, we would be part of a Euro Army.(to some extent or another)..designed to eventually replace NATO...which would undoubtedly incur conscription to provide enough cannon-fodder to man the new 'Ost Front' with Russia. All these younger voters who blamed Brexit on coffin dodging old farts, would be digging slit trenches in Estonia!
  24. Bowline, running bowline, marlin spike, alpine butterfly, Italian hitch...and of course a prussik knot[emoji1303]
