  1. I am VAT registered, I have been for over 14 years. I was simply pointing out that many who claim to have a day rate of over £400 yet remain none VAT reg, so must only work part time.
  2. I agree, BUT the majority of firms are not VAT registered, so the sub £400 day must be the norm. Or are some charging more, but only work part-time (to stay under the VAT limit) while others charge less but work more. So lower rates are possible, but harder work.
  3. Did you rev it hard before it stopped? When they are running out of fuel they can run lean and over rev, its best to stop the saw once it starts running out, over revving will score the pot and piston.
  4. If a climber cuts his line or stick his saw into himself and bleeds out, how will a second climber on site help him????????? The second climber is there for rescue after the accident, not accident prevention.
  5. Will that not just make the clutch slip, reducing pull???
  6. I have replaced the wander lead and switches, as far as I know that just operates the ram, which is working correctly.
  7. My Igland 6001 hydro electric winch has developed a similar problem, the cable has become extremely difficult to pull out. I removed the front inspection plate and have checked that the ram is operating, its fully extending and retracting as it should. The bearings appear good with no play. Any suggestions as to what the problem is please???
  8. Is there a reason your not going for a smaller Vermeer?
  9. Mine failed on the seam, not covered by warranty. Mine has been rubbish, I'll never buy another, 201 for me.

    Ms201

Its not dear, about £60 plus fitting I think.

    Ms201

Yes, Dick Leigh has them in stock, John fitted one to my 201, its great!!!
  12. I'd go for the 201t, the newer ones cut way better than the early ones, the top handle is weak on the rear AV mount, but a new ones only £9 and easy to fit yourself, also if it does break you can continue using the saw until you get chance to sort it. The 540t cuts well but the build quality is utter rubbish!!, mines had a new tank/handle assembly (£40) and now the rear AV mount has shaped and the spring is not even stretched.

    day rate

I'm not aware of any tree firm that hand feeds "whole tree chipper", over here most tree gangs are using 6" machines, a few have 9", 10" or occasionally 12" machines, any bigger and your generally taking crane or excavator fed.
  14. I was just about to ask the very same thing?? I thought Jon was hard to understand, but this guy really takes the biscuit
  15. I thought Chalara was relatively difficult to confirm, however its now apparently easy to spot from a speeding train??? As for trees having dead leaves 3 weeks ago, very few if any Ash even had leaves 3 weeks ago, were these last years dead leaves????
  16. Don't throw it much and when I do I catch the strop and slow decent. It had a brand new AV thats still perfectly straight. I'd only just had the new AV fitted and a new tank fitted!!
  17. This last week or so I've had a similar issue, the chain does not come right off, just runs outside the bar on the bottom of the bar where it goes to the sprocket. I've noticed the chain runs on the very inside of the sprocket, rather than the middle. But TBH today that was the least of my worries, while using the 540 on a sycamore dismantle I came to restart it and discovered a huge gap between the tank and saw body, the saw body attachment for the rear AV had snapped clean in half!! So I had to stop work and go home and get my 201, which also had a broken top handle, but at least they are still usable when this weak point breaks and its a cheap easy fix at £9 for the part. The 540 is IMO utter garbage!!!
  18. I would have thought £50 per tonne would have been nearer the correct price, how do you know there is 30 tonne? how are you moving it?
  19. I would not worry to much, we hear about all these cases of criminals suing, but in reality the law is not as much of an ass as people make out Businessman on trial accused of using unreasonable force on thieves raiding his property | Mail Online Diesel Thief Kevin Green's Fury over Victim Cleared of GBH
  20. Good post, I would also add that choosing one anchor point for one half of the tree then moving the anchor for the other half often makes life easier, IME
  21. I would simply "block out" chunks working in from one end, using a 66 with 25" bar and an axe. But its a lot of work for fire wood.
  22. Horse Chestnut? If so would be rotten before the carving was finished.
  23. I was with the NFU for about 5 years, but then as you say they got silly, I'm now with Arborisk, who are VERY completive, paying them half what I payed Lycetts 6+ years ago and Arborisk cover my tools, and paid out without issue when 3 saws were stolen
