I think it’s what you get used too .. I climbed on a Prussic for an Ariel rescue last week and it amazed me how much it slipped and binded up ascending , really didn’t like it. Don’t mind sit back or having to dress the hitch as long as it self tends, self tending with any system is what I want but really don’t like the zigzag and find it binds and does not self tend as well as a super loose vt type knot but I’ve only really used it on a ropewrench , been on 8mm armour prus for years, great stuff and very difficult to burn out , I was using liros before and having it last one climb.

Can’t like that post , sorry to hear your going through this Dom ,I know the angst you will be going through right now too well.. hope you get some where with recovery of any gear or catch the bastards !

In a Feild in the north Tyne valley nr Hexham ,Northumberland mate. Next door have a huge stack of oak that Scott’s turned down , chatting to the guy and he said as soon as there was any branch on a trunk they are not interested. He was getting good money for clean sticks but he looked at my photos and said that’s fire Wöod laddie! Shame as ring count was about 250.. I would mill it for posts before fire wood though.

Was chasing it up off the stump , I recon another 8” and it will be fine bill... didn’t want to cut any more off! And I had taken a tooth off the 88 with a stone on the stump.)

5m to first fork by 1m log interested to know to give him a fair price if I buy it for my mill but have seen oak prices vary wildly and it does have a few smaller branches on the 5 m straight length I was thinking around £200?

So for instance your leylandii , you can not see what they are resting against at the top so when you get to the top that 1” twig that was keeping them straight breaks and they twist even with some on the bottom they will still twist..

Have seen people twice go through conifers off ladders breaking ribs.. one of the cringeworthy things I’ve seen was a guy on the top run trying to get to the first branch on a massive beech .. in the end he tied a half a brick to the end of his climbing line as a throw weight which came back down on its first attempt right between his eyes and off the ladder he came.

A, send it to spud B, learn to sharpen properly, any saws performance is only as good as the chain is sharp, you could have a ported 880 on a 15 “ bar but if it’s blunt it’s useless... also the quickest way to burn out a saw is force it through every cut and also probably the best way to have a saw accident by having to push the saw instead of it dropping through Wöod like butter.

The best thing about Arb talk is the pictures right? That’s all instagram is , also a great way to see what old friends are doing and seeing what folk around the world are up too with my main passions trees and fishing there is loads of bits to keep you happy,really enjoyed watching say the Icelandic fishing guides week with his customers and wishing I was there this season with out the constant drivel that is posted on the likes of Facebook with it !

Exactly,break out the ladders I’m a Tree expert.... ffs , the amount of shocking shite tree work ive seen it with out a doubt all of been done by a cowboy off ladders. I agree with you dave, I hate the things carrying them ,storing them and working off them.

Pfanner arborist for sure , the new ish stihls I won in the Christmas raffle are pretty good and unfortunately better than the husky’s for a change ...in cooler weather any way. Save them for best and the Husky’s for pine and Sitka killing.

Alaskan milling is the last time I used a straight ladder! I’m petrified of the things these days and if I use them now will probably clip in before going up a big Tree on them.. Another thing is they can encourage really unsafe and sloppy Tree work from my experience.. having done some really amazingly stupid things myself just to get a job finished quick or if it’s over ran off ladders the temptation is there if they are.

I think there’s 101 videos on you tube that show why you should not use ladders for Tree work.. hedges with steps yes ,pollards maybe unless I can get the cherry picker close enough... small trees off steps maybe but for the others I’ll take my pole saw and throw line.

Alpine butterfly is what I use for any SRT anchors mate... maybe a bowline on a base tie but I really don’t like base anchors so rarely use one.

Bin the ladders mate and then you have no choice ! I think that’s how I got to grips with it , kept getting long walks with the ladders and thought maybe I should use that rope wrench thing I brought years ago and sat at the bottom of my kit bag.

SRT on dismantles is mint joe , I love spiking and the slack falling through the wrench and hitch climber , you can always be secure with a retrievable tip tie on a fat stem with out leaving pegs , just pull the tail and it slides down so you can knock another section out , so much easier than setting a rope guide up and you can set it at any point... safer as well if you need to bail out.

I hate ladders , I hate how much room they take up, untying them , securing them ,positioning them and working off them, get good with a throw line and climb SRT and dont look back. Its not about acsent so much with SRT either working a tree gets so much easier with complete loss of friction from branches that a single rope gives , swings and branch walks are a breeze and there is no way a double rope is more ergonomic....take downs easier for tying off on stems I could go on but with your mind shut to it that it’s a waste of time and a double ropes easier I’m wasting my time! No one could convince me either , I hated SRT and thought it was for benders when I first tried it but it was one of those things that I realised once I started properly using it I would never give up.

Spent a good year on the ground then another going up in lunch breaks , after work and begging all the time... your time will come just don’t look at it as that’s all your doing and every time your in the drop zone and clearing keep an eye on what the climbers doing and pick up on things especially the bad bits and think I would of easily gone out further or not done that and smashed that fence... if you have the pleasure of watching a good climber soak it all up and learn.. don’t just stand there thinking ffs all I ever do is drag branches... even dragging branches has its merits you quickly learn how if you where a climber how cutting in certain ways makes every ones life on the ground easier and can speed the job up.
