  1. The thing is a free lance climber is natural progression from being a lead climber IMO you don't just come out of college and become a super star climber or what ever as quite a few I've given a chance and regretted seem to think .Maybe there is a few odd acceptions to to that rule but they would be the very few people who have a natural aptitude for the job straight out of basic training and having that natural aptitude is extremely rare no matter how much you want to be a climber..maybe I'm just bitter it seems people now don't have to do all the things I did to get to be a climber such as a long stint as a grounds person and second climber but I honestly think watching as many climbers as possible and been a good groundsman gives you what you need more than any training to be a competent and productive free lance climber... Oh and the image of glen mill bank yelling at you to do star jumps and press ups when your about to do some thing stupid with a saw.... maybe the training was worth it !
  2. Nice work btw... I'm with you on this it's very suspect to suddenly drop leaves like that if you can get an analysis for poison done it would be interesting to see the outcome.
  3. Nicely done and put together tony , enjoyed that. Lol Jonny it does not look like the sorbus aucuparia we get here
  4. You wanna be careful john , had a lass throw a spoon through my monitor for spending to much time on Arb talk!
  5. Was Sonia out drinking with the girls Jon??
  6. Got it Dave ,replace picker for pecker and it starts to makes sense.
  7. Very true , I think the thing is with Arb work in general though is out of the large proportion of people that start off in the industry very few stay for the end game ... It's bloody hard work and I think you have to have a certain crazy, calculated and maybe even sadistic mentality to progress your self to be any good wether that be pushing your self climbing or dragging the biggest piles of brash and logs you can carry all day, and still have the strength to do a tidy job clearing up job... I think you quickly have to learn the ability to deal with people/customers and smell a rat for the people who won't pay ! When I first started freelancing full time I very quickly learnt who to not work for when cheques balanced and promises were broken, and most of the time I should of trusted my instincts.
  8. Never had problems getting permission for reductions as long as it's sensible. 5 meters is not sensible or sensitive on a TPOed mature beech tree.
  9. As the others have said really. I would not of thinned it at all .. Your removing growth that would make suitable reduction points in the future you may have possibly been able to get away with a 2-3 meter reduction if the crown had not been thinned, I would possibly ask for a 2 meter reduction in a few years but the harder you hit trees the faster and thicker the regrowth if it survives is any way and essentially you end up with a denser larger crown with weaker growth than if the tree had been left in the first place. Less is more in the long run.
  10. I would definitely try before you buy , I find it uncomfortable in every way and the hearing protection poor others will tell you it's the best lid they have ever used.
  11. That looks stunning j , I was looking at a burr elm table last night wishing I had more slabs of it please pm me a price if it's for sale. On the subject of Ms880's I would give stihl a call and see if they can help I have known a few they have rebuilt free of charge just out of warranty.
  12. Get em up on Arb safe Eddie ... Sorry to hear that's a nasty hit.
  13. Yes , it's ok ,I once got put through to Sweden which was confusing but told rare this happens got hold of UK the parts I ordered came and fitted quick .
  14. Spent about half hour searching for half 130's this morning after seeing yours thinking it was some kit.. Ffs
  15. At first I thought you meant you had just replaced the chassis on your Landy Dean but that is a whole new back end right down to the wheel nuts.. Proper job.
  16. Yes mate through the locks on both boxes and ground anchores and wheel clamps and headlock for the chipper and two locked bollards behind the door ... Then some how moved a tractor with lowered 3pt linkage winch and no battery all whilst people slept in tents 20 meters away.
  17. Me too , I have seen a lot of distorted pines in the Czech Republic and was told it was snow damage to young trees I think the guy was not to sure either...but I seriously doubt there has been any serious snow in Bedfordshire since the early 80's but it could be possible.
  18. They did a lot of cutting in my place and I know a guy down the road had three alarms as well as cctv they did all but one alarm before it went off and they ran,But give them time and they will happily cut away..should of got that alarm!
  19. Relatively good news in the whole situation:) the police had a very good idea of who did mine but had No evidence what so ever also one of the first things they did was take out the cctv cameras, so if you do install them make it discreet, personally I think alarms are one of the best deterrents. I really hope they get a good result from the barsteward slicing himself though.
  20. Yep ! Could be an interesting project but the tractor it would go on is only around 100hp.
  21. I fancy it at that price to convert back but it's a long way to go.
