  1. More than a truck? I don't think so. Your mog won't do 56mph uphill on a motorway carrying 10 tonnes of logs, for example. Once you factor in the purchase cost of your mog suddenly the truck starts looking very attractive, and if (when) you get a major breakdown it will cost more to fix than a truck too.
  2. Nope, not likely any time soon either as far as I know.
  3. Unless you are a 19 year old girl living in Alabama of course. Not to sure about green pantins with red boots either, looks like a christmas decoration!
  4. The cutting edge of something, maybe geek chic?
  5. So in essence you are saying that CHAS accreditation on its own is an unreliable indicator of H&S compliance in arb? Is that the official position of the AA? FWIW, I am confident that my H&S docs, which easily passed scrutiny from CHAS, and contain no references to scaffold, would meet the requirements of the AAAC scheme. I'll happily email you a copy to take a look at if you want.

660 will run 36" without too much trouble, I have a 30" on mine for everyday use, as I find its the best compromise between length and useability on spikes up a spar.

Are you actually milling timber with the saw or just processing it ready for milling? If you are milling with the saw then the more power the better, and the weight is neither here nor there. If your intending to use the saw regularly for cutting then I would go for a 660 as it is powerful enough to do any regular tree surgery work, but not so heavy that you will struggle with it up a tree.
  9. Sounds interesting, if one already had CHAS accreditation would that make it possible to fast track some of the AAAC stuff?
  10. Never, I'm too busy getting on with the job to ask silly questions. As a newcomer to the industry, you have to learn what is a necessary evil, and what is unacceptable. This job is hard and you will get asked to do things you wouldnt do on a course, but there are sensible limits.
  11. Can you get an artic up to the trees?
  12. Little lady is excellent thanks, must catch up when you are up here next. All I see when I look at your pics is a big pile of firewood on the back of my crane truck!
  13. Only one way to find out, I'll sharpen my 660.
  14. Make sure you use hotspot tape on the hoops, and keep a roll of the wide repair tape handy just in case. I think you would be doing well to get ten years out a skin tbh, especially if you are running machines in and out loading logs, but it is worth buying a good quality skin anyway.
  15. I have done it with a cabstar, 55 reg 3.0 litre model, 3 up in the cab plus collie, towing a 6" tracked jensen on a plant trailer. There is a certain technique to getting the collie in, the middle passenger gets in first, then the second passenger gets in but leaves his/her left leg dangling out of the door, while the driver wedges the collie in between the passengers legs, head facing into crotch, then the passenger crushes collie between their legs while the driver slams the door shut. The collie felt somewhat violated I believe, I cant say I recommend the experience. My 2000 W reg smiley face transit crewcab with ply chipbox weighed 2600kg with driver, large labrador, and lots of gear in the back, if thats any help.
  16. Remember the big beech on the front lawn outside the Hall, just up from the lake?
  17. I was there 96-98, but all the arb staff I knew have long gone, so cant help you much really. It is a nice place though!
  18. I ought to add that my system had an pressure relief valve set at 3 bar fitted just above the back boiler, vented to ground outside the building, just like combi boilers do. I also put an expansion vessel in to cope with minor fluctuations in pressure. Heat exchanger would work nicely, as it keeps the fluids in each system seperate, and if the tank is directly above the back boiler it will circulate without a pump.
  19. I set my wood burner up with a closed pressurised radiator system, which apparently you are not supposed to do. It worked just fine, ran it for nearly 2 years to heat the whole house. Theoritically you could just cut into the radiator circulation system and plumb it in, however there is significant risk of damaging the combi boiler, as the back boiler in the stove will introduce contamination such as rust particles into the system. Why not ditch the oil boiler and put a pellet boiler in instead?
  20. Sell the crane and buy a timber crane instead. Repipe and new valve block will be very expensive, and the older atlas cranes arent the best anyway, very heavy for what they can lift.
  21. Dont think you would need Premier tbh, try the free trial of the starter package and see if it does everything you need. You can always upgrade anyway.
  22. You can get Quickbooks for Mac now.
  23. Good basic no nonsense machine, I had the turntable model with the 50hp Hatz engine for a bit, nothing complicated about it, just chips whatever you put in it. Release on the stop bar is only on one side, tad annoying but not the end of the world. Not the lightest machine either, but then you get a lot more chipping power than a 6" machine.
  24. January 2010 Guidance Notes from the DFT say £3100 for first vehicle, £1700 for each additional. Standard National and International are now both £8100 for the first, £4500 for each additional. The same figures apply btw whether you are running a brand new £200k 8x4 recovery vehicle or a 20 year old 5 tonne tipper.
  25. Not for a restriced licence. An international unrestriced haulage licence needs more.
