  1. If you put a 3.5 tonne trailer behind it you would increase your payload by about 2.4 tonnes.
  2. I was going to say marlow sailing, but i cant really put my finger on why.
  3. Just get an orange beer mat and pop it in the windscreen by your tax disc. Job done.
  4. Conventional wisdom would say fell. More recent research would suggest a more measured approach. It depends on the targets, how much the client wants to keep the tree, and how much they are willing to spend to find out whether it is possible to keep it. In the long term, the cheapest option is to fell the tree immediately.
  5. Showoff! A little HMF won't have those fancy pants hydraulic outriggers though, they will be push pull like mine! My next crane will have powered stabilisers, radio remote, and one more extension than yours!
  6. You need the stabilisers. A better choice of crane would be a proper timber crane, that way you just pull a lever in the cab and the stabilisers go down. With the lorryloader type crane you'll be forever up and down pulling them out and pushing them back in, especially if you plan to use it in the woods.
  7. Dont think so, there was a fair bit of decay in the stem, and some metal in there too.
  8. Bits and pieces, some weeks shes out loads, other times sat in the yard for a month. 18 tonner, does look low, but I weighed her with a reasonable load of beech on a few weeks ago and she came in at 16 tonnes, so I dont worry now unless the tyres are actually rubbing on the mudguards.
  9. Certainly is, the tree was in the back garden of a old people's home, tight access across a lawn and a bit of a chicane through the flower beds! Wouldnt have got an 8 wheeler in there, let alone an artic, but that is where a nice short 4 wheeler like mine really comes in handy.
  10. Worked her hard today, 3 loads moved (30ish tonnes altogether), 300km travelled. These were the second and third load, all plane. Didnt get a pic of the first one, but it was pretty well stacked up too.
  11. Sure its not just you being heavy footed? I tend to wear my scarpas for pruning, and leave the zermatts for ground work and takedowns.

  13. I dont mind how many new lowering ropes a company like that buys me. If they didnt then I certainly wouldnt work for them again.
  14. It is possible to smooth out a bulge, but not to fill in a hollow spot, so I always err on the side of bulge. Ideally get it right first time though, as Hadleigh says, get the marking, measuring, and cutting spot on and it should just fall into place!
  15. I think one has to put one's legal mindset on and see it from the judges point of view, he had been asked to make a pronouncement based on the evidence presented, the letter of the law, and existing case law. He makes a statement based on all of this, which is not intended to alter the way in which contractors approach gaining TPO consent, but is intended to highlight shortcomings with the system and to influence future court decisions. The bottom line is, dont get too excited, and make your tpo applications as per usual. Unless of course you want to be at the cutting edge of lawmaking and star in your very own test case.........
  16. No, but i'm sure its on here somewhere.
  17. Depends what they are doing, if its shredding your favourite slippers then good luck with that!
  18. Just to be clear, DDD = dead diseased or dying? I thought proceeding with a fell without notification was only really appropriate when the tree is immediately dangerous? Photos and keeping bits of the tree as evidence is also a good idea in that situation. With regard to getting friendly with the TO/planners, that is a good idea but some LA's seem to take pride in being as awkward as possible to deal with, no matter how helpful you try to be as a contractor.
  19. I'm pretty sure that's just a shell, the engine and running gear are now living in a series landrover.......
  20. I find pinning them to the floor by the neck, baring your teeth and growling right in their face works fairly well. If all else fails, a little nip on the face usually does the trick.
  21. That is a slightly different situation, to follow correct procedure you should have submitted a 5 day notice and then cracked on. In fact, a judge has actually said that it should not be possible to apply for permission to fell a tree on the grounds that it is dangerous, ie if it is dangerous then it is dangerous now, and needs to be felled immediately, if it isnt dangerous now then it isnt dangerous at all and therefore you shouldnt be given consent to fell.........
  22. Very true, and they tend to have a naughty phase at around 2 years old, when they start to push the limits and try to move up in the pack order. Maintain pack discipline at all times!
  23. Not wanting to derail another thread any more than it is already, I thought I'd start a new one. So, "An appeal to the Secretary of State must be triggered by a decision issued by a council in response to an application for consent to cut down or carry out work on a protected tree, or by that council’s failure to issue a decision within 8 weeks of the date on which the application was received." As we all know, many decisions take much longer than 8 weeks. Has anyone appealed on grounds on non-determination, and if so how did it go? Also, since many TOs are over loaded, should we start appealing every time an application goes over 8 weeks, in order to highlight the problem. If the secretary of state starts getting 100's of appeals maybe the system would get looked into?
  24. Magnolias flower on the previous season's growth, so immediately after flowering if they dont want to lose flowers, otherwise whenever is convenient.
  25. Isuzu Trooper, I do know where there is a nice one going for your budget. PM me if you want info.
