  1. Water will do more than feeding imo. Especially with the dry summers we have had these last 2 years. I would be putting a leaky hose irrigation system in if they were my hedges.
  2. Nice work Rhys, good to see a Navara doing some proper work! Is the hiab truck yours?
  3. 65mph? Was it on a recovery truck?
  4. I missed the setup, but I would say a bit longer than an alaskan!
  5. Cool, I certainly enjoyed it, and it gave the mill a good workout. If you get a chance to take some photos of any finished work with the timber I could put together a tree to furniture montage!
  6. I nearly did one once. He got himself down in the end.
  7. Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick about timber framing. It would certainly make nice kitchen cabinet door fronts.
  8. Shhh, he's bought it now! The gentleman doing the milling is an experienced cabinetmaker and joiner, so I'm sure he has something in mind. I have a mind to cut some fake antique (non-structural) beams out of the other piece I have.
  9. The oak is going for timber framing, not very good quality being turkey, and the cherry I think he is hoping to use for cabinet making. He bought the timber from me, so I have no further involvement with the milled stuff.
  10. Pics of cherry.
  11. Some pics from this morning. A fellow arbtalker milling some turkey oak and cherry in my yard.
  12. Yes, the loops on the end arent supposed to go into the rope. Take the fid, put both loops on a biner, and fold it in half, the folded bit goes into the rope, so there is nothing to catch strands.
  13. I doubt it, its imported by Fletcher Stewart, and they tend to only sell pre cut lengths with spliced eyes. You could order some from one of the american suppliers.
  14. Mmmm, good choice.
  15. If you look at the Yale collection as a whole, there are plenty of colours to choose from. If you order enough they will make it in the colours of your choice. What colour is your handbag? I'll see if I can find you something to co-ordinate?
  16. I find the whole thing hilarious, especially the bit about elm. Anyone who has burnt DED elm will attest that it burns like enriched plutonium, yet here it is vilified. The fact that unseasoned elm is laden with water may have some bearing on the matter.
  17. If you climb lots of orange trees, I would suggest the green for better visibility.
  18. The Firewood Poem Beechwood fires are bright and clear If the logs are kept a year, Chestnut's only good they say, If for logs 'tis laid away. Make a fire of Elder tree, Death within your house will be; But ash new or ash old, Is fit for a queen with crown of gold Birch and fir logs burn too fast Blaze up bright and do not last, it is by the Irish said Hawthorn bakes the sweetest bread. Elm wood burns like churchyard mould, E'en the very flames are cold But ash green or ash brown Is fit for a queen with golden crown Poplar gives a bitter smoke, Fills your eyes and makes you choke, Apple wood will scent your room Pear wood smells like flowers in bloom Oaken logs, if dry and old keep away the winter's cold But ash wet or ash dry a king shall warm his slippers by. The firewood poem was written by Celia Congreve, is believed to be first published in THE TIMES newspaper on March 2nd 1930. Funny, no mention of calorific values, ODTs, or Archimedes......
  19. Trango
  20. At least you'll have an excuse for being under the table after one pint of shandy!
  21. Thought it was about time I put some more truck pics up. Here she is working on a small site clearance job. Pics of grapple as requested by Stevie B.
  22. I have used both, and they are both good. I would pick whichever one colour co-ordinates best with your handbag.
  23. I hope none of your customers are pedantic enough to insist on a cubic metre of logs, measured with no air gaps....... If they are, then I really think you should measure it for them the Archimedes way, then they would get exactly what they deserve!
