Why is Jeremy Corbyn a bad idea. I tend to agree with what he says. Could you enlighten me?

 

Austerity's a chioce.

 

I don't believe austerity is a choice Mark, I believe it is a responsibility!

 

Spending public money should always be subject to the closest scrutiny based upon sound social / economic policy.

 

To over simplify - perhaps Labour could be described as believing a larger state mechanism and increased social security are desirable and should be funded by higher taxation, and the Tories could be described as pretty much the opposite?

 

Neither system is going to please all the people all the time so we're pretty much screwed either way.

 

The one thing they all seemed to agree on was that the foreign aid budget should be ring-fenced and tied to GDP. As such, it bears no relationship to any actual or perceived "justifiable need", but rather results in spend to meet spend targets - meanwhile, almost every other UK government department has been reined in - resulting, in what you refer to as austerity.

 

Is austerity a choice? Well, perhaps yes it is, it is the choice our politicians have made for us whilst rather doggedly insisting upon, and writing into law, the requirement to send funds overseas.

 

Perhaps there is insufficient suffering at home to warrant allocation of UK tax funds within the UK?
