Banning the sale of new petrol/diesel cars in 2040 will be as practical as banning the sale of VHS recorders in 2017. However does send a big message to the industry and I'm sure more countries will follow. Shell is still basing its long term strategy on petrol cars still being all the rage in 2080, I can imagine some of its investors beginning to question that.

Once the cost and performance of electric cars overtakes conventional ones then market forces will see the end of fossil fuel cars overnight I think (this is not too far away). How many people who buy new cars would buy a petrol car when it would cost more to buy, cost more to run, cost more to maintain, has a lower range, and lower performance? Maybe some of the Jeremy "I love the smell of the internal combustion engine in the morning" Clarksons, but no way enough for the demand needed to run the production, R&D, etc required.

This also applies to HGVs, when you see what the likes of Volvo and Scania are doing.

We all know self driving cars are around the corner. As soon as we get them it will mean people can get rid of their cars and share a self driving über taxi to work. It will mean the amount of cars on the road will decrease greatly.

Imagine how little a self driving bus would cost to run. Self driving technology really has the potential to revolutionise public transport :)

It means places like Saudi Arabia will have less influence over the West :)

For me, just back from another 200 mile jaunt to Malin Head and back, stopping for a long lunch.

"Bring it on"

The self driving bit, even if only practical on "A" roads,(at first) at least the humdrum motoring to get there could be more relaxing, AND if it becomes practical on the scenic bits of road/track,even better, I can then rubberneck better.

N.B.

Some of the L12345 =local roads in the ROI will be a proper challenge for a self driving car!

Self driving cars are for idiots.

Anyone promoting their use is a moronic cretinous imbecile.

The stupidity of wanting to sit in a self driving car is an example of just how stupid some humans can be.

.

Might as well get the bus .

I don't know about that.

The fact that people think they need to order stuff 10 mins before they need it and that there are companies out there pandering to these needs means there will be a massive increase in traffic in the years to come.

Does anyone here really like driving in rush hour? If I can use a car that can drive itself it means I can sit on the back seat and have a snooze :)

Tesla cars can effectively drive themselves (look on YouTube if you don't believe me). IMHO, self driving technology will revolutionise life. Just imagine a ford transit that will drive to work by itself, take all your waste to the tip by itself, then drive you home after getting lashed in the pub.
