Funny how a majority of post are willing to work on Christmas Day for double or triple their normal hourly or day rate, yet seemingly treat this same day as just another day?.

Feel bad for folks that are charged more on Christmas than on any other work day, especially by some who feel the market can bare the additional burden for the sake of a holiday.

Call outs come at a premium for several reasons.

Its generally storm damage and that's more hazardous, its usually the middle of the night and in bad weather and that's more hazardous, it usually means you cant jump into the planned days work the next day so that throws planning out and can lead to disappointed clients.

You cant do it on your own so if you want staff to be available you have to pay them to be available so there is a cost implication, you have to pay them overtime rates when they turn out and (in the UK) if its a statutory holiday more again or overtime pay and the time back.

So its not because they think it will bear more its because that's what it costs

I'd go out and my family would understand as a few hrs doing a call out would mean I'd be able to afford a few more DAYS quality time with the children. I never feel charismas day is quality time as its all rip open present quick hello to family then off to the kitchen for me. I much prefer boxing day, much more relaxed!

Anyway who is to say a fallen tree on a roadside is not a danger to life, all it takes is a tired family driving home and the unthinkable could happen! Hens why I get called out too clear them!

There is an old saying, "Everything's for sale for the right price"

If I wanted to work xmas day I would book work in and go out and work, I don't want to work, so in order to get me to work I need to be enticed to work by the right price, for me the price is triple my normal rate, meaning I could take three normal days off to compensate.

Customers are free to pay it or go else where :)

To be perfectly honest I'm not sure I'd even want to work at triple pay, I may just ignore the phone if it rings :)

Our friend broke her neck when her family crashed into a fallen tree on the road. She's had 6 years of constant pain since.

So it is worth going out for these, payment determined by customer/circumstances though.
