It's not a cop out when we've exported practically all our industry to china, it's slowly shifting back. Electronics is a good example as it's gone full circle as they chased the cheaper currency, but now the machinery is there not here.

 

To just say stop buying from china is also a cop out, you're not stopping that purchase. You might get it made more environmentally friendly but it's still going to be made regardless!.

 

Agree, to a point. Make stuff in smarter, cleaner, closer to home ways. Technology is only a part, (minor part), of the solution though. That's another misconception: that it's the silver bullet that's going to sort everything. It's the politician's favourite.

 

Bottom line is we need to drastically reduce overconsumption of stuff. Consume smarter, consume less, waste less stuff.

I've always loved the hypocrisy of glass bottle recycling, everything except clear gets crushed and used for stuff like road ballast as it's unusable.

 

Think there was a thing about Holland, all beer bottles are the same or something so they get reused. Like a modern irnbru bottle, that I'd vote for.

Yep. All plastic bottles, some glass bottles, all drinks cans. It's very simple - you take them back to the supermarket, feed them back into the machine, get a receipt and redeem it at the till.

The good old days, when I was a young brickies labourer everyone on site got glass bottles of juice every day. I'd collect up all the empties (worth 10p or 15p) and every Friday ate for free at the bakers.
