  2. I have a lot of water nearby, I get loads of them, from small damsel fly, to huge emperor dragonflies. when the local ant population take to the wing, the dragonflies arrive within seconds and for the next hour will feast, it looks like a remake of the battle of Britain in miniature.
  3. Because I don't like divisive BS. There is too much of it on this site nowadays. You are the purveyor of the vast majority of it. You've pretty much single handedly reduced this and a number of other threads to a cesspit. In the pursuit of your own weird, divisive agendas. N+1 Is the NHS failing because of illegal immigrants? Yes or No.

  7. I think the Woodmizers are probably more expensive that the Trakmets at the minute, my first one was pre brexit so no tax implications and a good price, super well built etc, since then I’d say price has gone up and quality down as they have got bigger as a company. That’s only an observation or my opinion and in no way are they not well put together it’s just a few finer details and looking at welds etc you see a few differences. My current machine is set up to cut up to 1.2m diameter and 1.1m between the rollers so not as fast as a woodmizer LT 70 for example but it’s what it was specced up for. I’ve seen Woodmizers being used but never had an opportunity to compare the two. I think there’s an old thread in here about them, Big J in particular has used both. Roughly at min I’d say LT70 wide is around £65-70k petrol kubota Trakmet TTP 600 Wide £50-55k plus generator.
  8. Whenever I come across old tree trunks, I see potential—not waste. I've repurposed them into rustic benches, planter bases, even carved stools. If the wood’s solid, turning it into slabs or milling for live-edge furniture is a great option. Otherwise, letting them decay naturally supports habitat and fungi. It really depends on species, condition, and your tools or vision.

  11. Found this abandoned pet in the shallow brook that runs along the edge of Gloucester Park last month. Not the frequently seen UK feral Red-eared terrapin or the very closely related (sub species) Yellow-bellied slider, this is an Eastern Musk or Stinkpot turtle. It wouldn’t have survived through the winter where it was, so it resided with me for a week until collection by a rescue centre in Kent which specialises in reptiles. Stinkpot turtles are smaller, have shorter legs and more highly domed shells than Red-ears/YBS and judging by observations, are generally much more secretive and timid too. EG It never climbed out to bask on the rocks I provisioned for it. The common names allude to the species’ defensive strategy of emitting an unpleasant odour when alarmed. Thankfully, I didn’t experience this first hand. Presumably because, being used to handling as a former pet, the animal’s disposition was pretty chilled.😎

  16. When got quotes for timber prices last winter they were that high I don't think it's viable to buy it in personally unless you don't value your time or can sell it for a lot more than I'm able to.

  19. Working in Germany I found plenty of bullets. The Armour piercing ones, ruin your chain.Berlin there were roof tile chunks in most of the old trees. Once in Bergen by the Docks , I felled a tree full of shrapnel. When we were working on lowering the stump and cutting around the splinter a German guy asked what we were doing. As the chunk finally came out I gave it to him,he was over the moon. Considering the effort his fore fathers had gone to in order to get that bit of metal to Norway in the first place.

  21. Dunno about the solar panel thing. The only experience I have of solar panels is that my parents had it fitted years ago and they hardy get any money back from it. Its broken a couple of times and each time it seems to cost a grand to sort it out which wipes out any savings that they have made over the previous years. They are old and probably being fleeced but that's not my problem
