Nothing wrong with my splices. It wasnt about saving money but learning and practising the skill of splicing. The rings were bought from HoneyBrothers who are one of the largest UK arb shops, or perhaps one of the most well known. They are rated, 25kN parts from what looks to be a reputable brand. Have you looked up their history? They were set up by a ex ISC guy. They are not a traditional manufacturer as they do not make anything themselves. Anyway, I'd suggest chrome is not very well suited to connectors, particually aluminium where the metal underneath is soft. The chrome tends to become rough and flake off. In this case I believe impact against the tree or between the rings has caused the roughness. Polished them smooth, problem solved, will be using them tomorrow. I have some steel Kong biners that are chromed, so AtHeight are not the only ones. It can flake off of steel too. Its just odd as, annodising is much cheaper, more durable, looks better, doesnt cause any issues when dented or wearing through.
  18. Looks like damage from the rings rubbing on each other to me.

This At Height lot need a bit of scrutiny. They've sprung up from nowhere, most noteworthily offering a biner that looks a lot like an ISC Big Dan. And I can't for an instant imagine why ISC would be licensing or OEM manufacturing for them. And they've sold kram some bizzare aspartame chrome plated cambium saver ring.
  20. We could've inflated a blimp with the breath we've wasted mate.
  21. Especially when your life and that of those you work with may depend on it
  22. Kram the amount of shite you buy is unreal. Have you ever heard buy cheap buy twice? Just spend your money on proper gear in the first place.
  23. Can't help but laugh. The OP is certain he can improve on industry standard kit, for less money, then complains when his own ideas aren't up to his standards.
  24. The plot thickens. I thought they didn't quite look like ally, but assumed it was just the photo.
  25. I have no idea what he was talking about.... Not sure he does either. Is it related to his dementia testing I wonder?

Had a much closer look. These rings are very unusual for an aluminium product - they are chrome plated! On the other side, the rope has polished some the chrome away, the line is quite visible
  27. Weird. It's got to be the rope surely? Nothing normally in a tree would be hard enough to scratch aluminium like that. Plus the direction of the abrasion as you say. That being the case I'd be concerned about your rope. If there's enough grit in it to cause that. Make it a long and agitated bath. Unless it was the throw line. Seems unlikely as well.
  28. I'm grateful the rats round here don't carry crowbars. I've managed to get the rats around our house by baiting up an area for several days then shooting them with a normal scope at dusk as they nip out to feed. That has the bonus that I can guarantee a safe backstop. I'll get a night vision setup at some point.
