  1. The sheepadoodle Stubby, maybe its purpose is to advertise dulux water colours!
  2. Dalmatians are prone to sight problems aren't they? Large breeds like Doberman and GS suffer hip dysplasia amongst other things, and the small breeds have breathing issues... The more human intervention in breeding, the more health problems suffered.
  3. I've often thought nowadays it's driven by fashion, can't see a reason for these mixes other than to be different. As far as I'm aware no-one is buying them for a working purpose. As is the way with the world, be it phones or cars or clothes etc. Always has to be something "new". I'm quite fond of an old fashioned mongrel though, always found them to be more balanced and have fewer health issues associated with the breeds.
  4. Of the climbers I've seen the majority have not adopted using 2 ropes, surprisingly some still don't know it's a requirement now. A few are doing it, but grudgingly, only due to "pressure" from management. I know several people personally who have doubtless contributed to the introduction of 2 rope climbing by cutting themselves out of trees. All of them know the shortcut or mistake that led to it and believe it was entirely avoidable, none support mandatory 2 rope working.
  5. They do say the eyes don't lie, I think you will be right.
  6. Have thought about you and Bonnie often today Ted. She looked lovely and fit, very happy in your pack! Losing them is hard going.
  7. If Scottish Cleaning Services was still a member here he'd travel to do it cheap no bother. He had huge ladders and 2 jigsaws ideal for a dismantle like those trees. Wonder if he's published his autobiography yet.
  8. Found the second cowpy of this year today, hadn't been down for long. As a youngster I stayed with my hill shepherd Uncle at any opportunity. The first stock related task I remember doing was spotting cowped ewes, 40yrs later and I just keep seeing them. Found 14 last year and 13 of them were ok.
  9. Hi Rob, are you not able to use equipment supplied by the training provider for the course? I've no experience of the two you mention but I've used a few and for me there's never been a "best harness", they all have good and bad points. If you look at Arb supply shops like Gustharts, FR Jones etc, there shouldn't be any confusion about the harness being suitable for use.
  10. Found a little nest today, is it a Finch of some type? For scale I could cover it with the palm of my hand.
  11. @Acerforestry This would make a nice gift for a mate of mine if you haven't sold it yet.
  12. It really has come to something when a novice doing their 1st stunt fell of a 40' tree, with a bowsaw in a domestic garden full of targets is the safest suggestion!
  13. I was trying to think constructively while I read it but when I got to the bit about the motorcycle suit from a car boot sale, well. To the OP, I thought you wanted to chop 3 trees in half and chop the leaning tree nearly down. You appear to have started at the wrong end of the tree, or am I mistaken?
  14. Looks like there's still a job for the vaccination centre signs after all, they've been appropriated!
  15. Pretty much all seems to be forgotten about here. There are a few people wearing masks but the vaccination centre signs are stacked on the roadside now and only seen one "thank the NHS" poster for a long time, in general I think it's business as usual.
  16. If you're ever close again it's worth a visit, majestic and intimidating. It's right beside the A68 just South of Jed, if you've travelled that road then you passed it.
  17. I wouldn't suggest using a top handle saw at all. Sorry but you don't understand enough about using a saw to consider it. It's good you're thinking about the logistics of dealing with the arisings but there will be a lot more stuff than you imagine. More important to think about actually taking the top off a tree that size. Are they leaning or weighted favourably, branches not intertwined, what cut will you use. There's a lot to go wrong with it and that's before you add a novice on a ladder. What exactly was the work you had quoted? Be interested to see pics.
  18. Another close contender for my favourite tree is The Capon Tree, an Oak around a thousand years old. I've a long family history in the Scottish Borders (from a Reiver family) and it pleases me to see this tree and think my ancestors were likely familiar with it. Capon Tree, Jedburgh | Ancient Tree Forum WWW.ANCIENTTREEFORUM.ORG.UK The Capon Tree, a hollow English oak (Quercus robur), is one of the...
  19. Like the vids on your YouTube channel AJ, you have a new subscriber.
  20. I'd say I have a few favourite trees but to pick one, the all time favourite, it's a Copper Beech in the neighbours garden that I see every day and have known as long as I can remember. First tree I remember climbing as a child, first tree I could identify, had a swing hung from it, gang hut under it, picnics and even romance, it's had a lot of impact on my life. And now I do trees for a living, the times I've climbed it to do work have been particularly rewarding.
  21. Readers grease nipples, or Best back end oil?
  22. So does this mean it's no longer considered unparliamentary behaviour to call him a total wanker in the chamber?
