    I don't think failure is absolutely inevitable, splits close to the ground tend to be supported by the roots and yours is not too high up. If you can avoid pruning it you'll avoid provoking sprouting, which I think is not so attractive as the natural growth. The other thing to think about is what's going to be there in 10-15 years time, that tree will be so big you're wondering how to manage it. Small trees are cheap, why not plant another one now, do formative pruning over the next 10 years and then you can look at them both and decide what to do - maybe take one of them down.

    Think you get condensation under the tarp which is in contact with the wood. Ideally you want an air gap above the wood.

    Wondering how you use them - the outside corners seem like they've seen some action but holes not really worn, are you using them srt or drt? Also I wonder if these are the bush or bearing type? My hitchclimber pulley on drt will probably be scrapped on hole wear first.

    I changed my old 261 from .063 to .050, wouldn't want to go back. If you can't get a sugi bar stick with Stihl Light04 or even Oregon speedcut would be my suggestion rather than going .063.

    I've been to Jedburgh quite a few times, used to have a machine in the coat hanger factory but COVID was the final nail and factory closed down couple of years ago. It's four and a half hours away though so no help to you. I do know it's surrounded by miles of rugged countryside, or pretty much the middle of nowhere.

    How big is the left hand branch? Rather than remove it completely, may be appropriate to subordinate it, so maybe reduce it by half so that it grows much slower than the main stem. That way your funny split union gets swallowed up rather than turned into a huge rot pocket.

    Maybe people are more likely to buy a single dry log on eBay (ready to use) than a bootload of green though?

    I think you need some wrought iron bands fashioned by the local blacksmith. More seriously, can it be wedged and pegged with oak or something slow decaying? Seems like you want to avoid plastic attachments really, as plastic pollution in future years undermines the whole idea of being good for wildlife.

    I was composing something similar but didn't want Mick Dempsey saying I didn't need to eat them, just fell them. Could be 3 days per tree, these are the ones that seem to overrun the quote when I'm subbing, no machinery means an awful lot of blocking up and then a lot of sawdust to clear. I agree, find the right firm that have the specialist gear and contacts and get more quotes.

    I have converted my 261 to narrow kerf, it definitely cuts faster. I haven't done timed cuts or anything but my impression on small stuff up to say 12 or 14" it's as quick as the 400, and a bit lighter so easier to use. Once the wood gets bigger then I think 3/8 chain clears chips better and the 400 would win. Sounds like you should go 261, I think it's well balanced with 16" bar.
