I've seen that black smouldery burn when using it on scout campfires. On our burner at home I've always burned it mixed and never had a problem.

Cheap as chips too - really tempting. The 540 is as much money as a 50cc saw.

Disappointed because it failed, or disappointed with how it worked? Just curious, most people seem to rave about them but I've not used one. Maybe you need a 462? Or if you're going Husqvarna instead get a 592 or maybe 585, quite a bit cheaper.

Do you leave that where it is and hook it up to an ascender then?

... or just use the back end of your climbing rope, that's been LOLER'd! To be fair I don't do a lot of natural crotch as it's so hard on my nice ropes, I carry a spider sling in my climbing bag so I do like the advantages of friction up high and not needing to set up a bollard for a few small pieces.

So neither your rubble layer nor topsoil are shrinkable clay? Can't see an issue then, take it out - not that big anyway.

Maybe put the 181 on eBay, shows willing you aren't just buying an ever increasing number of saws. Your other strategy is the one I follow, buy so many they lose count and don't really worry if one more turns up.

I pull it back when sharpening too, think I started doing it because it makes sure teeth don't catch on stuff on the bench or vice under the bar, and now habit.

The chain goes 3 times backwards in a sharpen , doesn't make a lot of sense to worry about the oil pump to me as the chain will have done 3 spins forward in half a second running.

I get round behind the power head to file so I can't see the front of the teeth though, dot of pen helps. Got some old OHP pens that are never going to be used in an office again. Also my eyes aren't all that great so can't see the metal filings unless I bend down close, don't like bending down every tooth.

Personally I'd give that a rub over with a file or stone to make sure nothing is sticking proud, and crack on. Can't see the amount of material removed being very significant to strength or balance, not like it's the spot where they fatigue crack.

On paper yes, 10%, pick one up though it feels much smaller and more manoeuvrable. Same argument could apply to saying no point in the 400 just buy a 462, but they're different saws to use.

I think MRS is the modern name, yes. At one time people talked about SRT and DRT (double rope) but two things cause confusion, namely you only had one rope in DRT, and the two anchor/two rope climbing. You might also see the abbreviation DdRT for Doubled Rope. Definitely get at least a foot ascender and see how you go. You need to put it on before you go up the tree, I owned one for a few years but it didn't help at all in my climbing bag. Now I wear it on any reasonable tree, after a day climbing my legs are tired but I don't need physio on my shoulders like I used to. I also have a knee ascender but only set that up on longer hauls, not essential. I'd also suggest looking at SRT to save effort but don't change everything at once. Only other point I'd make is I agree the ascender is not PPE, but if you buy a good one eg Harken Ninja then it has a very light grip on the rope and so doesn't need much tail below you to pull the rope through as you slide the foot up. Knee ascender you can set up cheaply yourself, or buy HAAS which just works but they have got surprisingly expensive.

Fair point, forgot that. No point anyone downplating then.

Further thought, I think the plated weight determines what licence you need to tow it. If you have pre97 licence then you hold B+E anyway.

I think the regs have changed. See above link, Ifor are telling you you don't need to downplate.
