    2021

    Belated happy New Year all.
  2. Been on the TM for the last 3 years and really like it but tried a Petzl Sequoia this week. Much better in some aspects, no stupidly vulnerable elastic cord at the back, much lighter, decent gear loops and seems to be easier moving through restricted crotches. Has the option of an adjustable bridge as well, ideal for those of us in their 6th decade. On the downside I used the leg Ds more than the side Ds on the TM, might have been adjustment but the Sequoia leg Ds just didn't work for me. I'll probably go with the Sequoia for my next harness given price and adjustable bridge option. It's also much closer to the rock harnesses I'm used to, particularly the SRT version.
  3. I always fasten the chinstrap for climbing (vertex vent)
  4. A standard prussic will work, you could also use e2e hitch with or without pulley tending.
  5. I was looking at the Notch Rook as a possibility, a good bit more expensive but has three attachment rings above the swivel although they don't rotate individually.
  6. Technically it could be top or bottom (steady) roping depending on the position of the belayer. In each case the anchor point is installed at the top of the climb and the climbing rope rigged before being dropped to the climber to tie in. For rock climbing the anchors are brought to a single point, usually a screwgate, with any movement essentially being in two dimensions rather than the three dimensions in arb. This makes the angles in rock climbing quite simple to establish and there is only minimal variation during the climb.
  7. Always referred to this as a 'top rope' when rock climbing and is installed from the top rather than the base of the climb, i.e. the anchor point is inspected for suitabilty prior to use. My other concern with two ropes is how many understand the potential for exceeding 100% loading on each anchor point is you get the angles wrong? The potential for this to occur as a climber moves through the canopy and between multiple stems is significant.
  8. Couldn't find anything being blocked by my virus software, bitdefender.
  9. I've not been able to access the site at all for the last week, it has timed out at every attempt. All good today though so you've pressed the right button somewhere Steve.
  10. Did a 4 week stint with TKF in Holmfirth. Excellent training that went beyond the NPTC requirement for the group of motivated soon to be ex squaddies, still only a base to build experience on and have been really lucky to work with some outstanding arbs since. If you are motivated, listen and pull your weight the folk you work with will happily mentor your development. Still 57, just, and loving every day. Even on the bad days you're not going back to a hole in the ground with 2 feet of water in it or a drainage ditch under a blackthorn hedge.
  11. If it's only occasional use and fuel is likely to sit for a long time consider using Aspen 2 or a Stihl/Husky equivalent like Motomix. A bit more expensive but keeps far better.
  12. At the end of the day it's the council's tree on their land and they are responsible for it's management. Any pruning by you could land you with a bill should the council consider you to have damaged the asset in any way.
  13. As well as arb specific courses clean driving licence with +E can tip the balance for being taken on. C or C1 a bonus but even B+E makes you more useful. I'll pm you my experiences starting out and looking for an employer.
  14. Even in these tight times £1 an hour might put a few off Matt.

    Retraining

I've found the tickets that open doors are cs38 and, often overlooked, B/C1/C + E. Some employers would give more weighting to the latter and consider putting you through cs38 and 39 on or after probation period. Experience will determine starting point for wages though there are some sectors that pay a banded wage according to job title irrespective of time served, these are probably going to invest in further development early in your career. It can be a bit of a lottery depending on your location, I commute about 20 miles to my current yard but feel that the benefits are worth it. Why not give Demelza at Lowe Maintenance, https://lowe-maintenance.co.uk/ 01729 825132, a call and get her views. It would be great to see more females in the profession so I hope you go for it.
  16. I started much later, you'll be fine. In the same area though work up in West Yorks.
  17. A quick Google reveals they are now the Foresters Friendly Society, 185+ years of financial and social support - read our history WWW.FORESTERSFRIENDLYSOCIETY.CO.UK Foresters Friendly Society has been helping our customers save for more than 185 years. Take a look at our well-established history online today. Their heritage trust includes a museum that may be interested Foresters Heritage Trust Museum and Archive - Stoke-on-Trent WWW.FORESTERSHERITAGETRUST.ORG The Trust's collection of artefacts, regalia and documents celebrates the history and heritage of Friendly Societies
  18. How about wooden guttering, got to be people constrained by planning regs who have to replace like with like.
  19. Watch out for the max permitted volume, it may need to be two adjacent structures, at least from the outside (English rules).
  20. Really? Prior to the 80s deregulation most people rented, 14%+ interest rates only available through a building society who wouldn't touch you if you hadn't been saving with them from birth and proved you saved more than you spent. Most couldn't afford a car, let alone washing machine, dishwasher etc and you asked the bill payer before you made a phone call (on a landline) 'cos it cost an arm and a leg, especially to another town (long distance). I don't know of any 24 yr old supermarket workers who had any prospect other then the bus and a council house.
  21. I stand corrected, I have always had assessment by a different individual and understood that to be a requirement.
  22. Closest I know is TKF Training in Holmfirth. Alternatively you could try to find a trainer and assessor (must be different people) who may come to you if you have all the required kit, suitable location and required timber resource.
