Did a 4 week stint with TKF in Holmfirth. Excellent training that went beyond the NPTC requirement for the group of motivated soon to be ex squaddies, still only a base to build experience on and have been really lucky to work with some outstanding arbs since. If you are motivated, listen and pull your weight the folk you work with will happily mentor your development. Still 57, just, and loving every day. Even on the bad days you're not going back to a hole in the ground with 2 feet of water in it or a drainage ditch under a blackthorn hedge.

If it's only occasional use and fuel is likely to sit for a long time consider using Aspen 2 or a Stihl/Husky equivalent like Motomix. A bit more expensive but keeps far better.

At the end of the day it's the council's tree on their land and they are responsible for it's management. Any pruning by you could land you with a bill should the council consider you to have damaged the asset in any way.

As well as arb specific courses clean driving licence with +E can tip the balance for being taken on. C or C1 a bonus but even B+E makes you more useful. I'll pm you my experiences starting out and looking for an employer.

I've found the tickets that open doors are cs38 and, often overlooked, B/C1/C + E. Some employers would give more weighting to the latter and consider putting you through cs38 and 39 on or after probation period. Experience will determine starting point for wages though there are some sectors that pay a banded wage according to job title irrespective of time served, these are probably going to invest in further development early in your career. It can be a bit of a lottery depending on your location, I commute about 20 miles to my current yard but feel that the benefits are worth it. How about wooden guttering, got to be people constrained by planning regs who have to replace like with like.

Watch out for the max permitted volume, it may need to be two adjacent structures, at least from the outside (English rules).

Really? Prior to the 80s deregulation most people rented, 14%+ interest rates only available through a building society who wouldn't touch you if you hadn't been saving with them from birth and proved you saved more than you spent. Most couldn't afford a car, let alone washing machine, dishwasher etc and you asked the bill payer before you made a phone call (on a landline) 'cos it cost an arm and a leg, especially to another town (long distance). I don't know of any 24 yr old supermarket workers who had any prospect other then the bus and a council house.

I stand corrected, I have always had assessment by a different individual and understood that to be a requirement.

Closest I know is TKF Training in Holmfirth. Alternatively you could try to find a trainer and assessor (must be different people) who may come to you if you have all the required kit, suitable location and required timber resource.

I started late and feel like I've got a new lease of life. Lucky enough to work with a great team which is well resourced. There'll always be niggles and bad days but far outweighed by the great ones, nothing quite like being up in the canopy of a mature tree (as long as it's not a monkey puzzle). I've probably added years to my life and don't fear the strokes and other issues laying waste to my office/car bound contempories. The best bit is looking forward to the day rather than dreading the same old issues coming round again and again.

You could look at tkf training in Holmfirth https://tkftraining.co.uk/ or Askham Bryan College. Give them a call and see if there's any funding they know of. The other route would be to get a post with a council/council contractor as an apprentice but suspect the places for this year will be taken and wages will be minimal due to investment in training you up. Glendale are the contractor for Rotherham council.

Well out of area for me, this has come to my attention. Could be a great opportunity for someone with the right experience but with applications closing 1200 hrs 7 May 19. Arboriculturalist Location: Aylesbury Start Date: ASAP End Date: 22 June 2020 Description of activities and duties to be undertaken · Possess excellent communication skills, with ability to prioritise own workload and work to tight deadlines with minimum supervision · Be able to implement the project specific requirements set by HS2. It's NPTC training providers you need. I went City and Guilds as they are, or were, readily accepted abroad whilst Lantra were not and my funded centre was C&G. I know of Lowe Maintenance at Settle and TKF training at Holmfirth, there are plenty more about. A lot will deliver courses away from their home location if there is the demand, I think Lowe Maintenance do a lot of their course towards the Lakes. This lot say they deliver courses in Cumbria, https://www.hwtraining.co.uk/course/arboriculture-training-courses/. Don't know them so can't give a thumbs up or down.

they don't have numbers any more, just NPTC code and title. L3 award in severing uprooted or windblown trees is 21-02 (was CS 34 &35), L3 in emergency treework operations is 21-05 (was CS 50).

Personally I'd go for 30/31 (in old money), climbing and aerial rescue as a starter then invest in driving licences; B+E essential, C1+E desirable. Next would be aerial cutting, aerial pruning and aerial rigging then on to felling over 380 and emergency treework operations if going into tree surgery/windblown if going into forestry (in which case you won't need aerial quals either). In your location I'd give Phill and Demelza at Lowe Maintenance in Settle (01729 825132, https://lowe-maintenance.co.uk/) a call for some advice and options. They gave me some excellent guidance even though I wasn't going to use them for training having funding elsewhere. Many of the later courses will be funded by a good employer if he thinks you're worth keeping or pick your jobs and spread the cost over time if going SE. Good luck.
