  10. Winches are only suitable for logs which are nice and straight. (Or milling beams) Which is why I never get to use one. Also I prefer the feedback of manually controlling the mill. [emoji106]
  11. Have a good look at the bar as well. Check it's not worn inside more on one side than another.

  13. It's lateral chatter. There are many causes. The most common is uneven sharpening. It's almost impossible to hand file to the precision you need. Only achievable with a professional bench grinder. This will allow you to reset all the teeth and depth gauges the same. The closer your top plate angle is to 0 degrees, the less chatter but slightly slower cut. Most ripping chains are 10-15 degrees. I re grind all my ripping chains to 0 degrees. Gives a very smooth finish. (Mostly). Species,moisture content,form etc will also affect finish. [emoji106]

  16. ????? We've all been there.... My first paid solo milling job was ash felled 3 years previous. Cut 2 boards in 6 hours. Blunted the chain 3-4 times per cut. Charged him travel expenses only and went home feeling a right twat. Ash...... Learnt that one. ?[emoji106]
