  1. I never change the chain on the job, I just change the saw.

  3. I always used to set the ratchet so that it settled on the bottom of the “window” when tightening and the top when loosening. in that way the flywheel wouldn’t turn.
  4. Lifting off the springs, and lifting the feed roller up is easy. You do have to be right above the roller box to get a straight lift though. I must have changed the blades more than 150 times, I’ve done that every time. I never torqued them either, clean them up nice and put them back tight.
  5. Have owned two hilux, 1 Navara, two Rangers and a LR. NFI on fuel consumption. Biggest thing you can do is put a back on the pickup to save drag.

If your after appreciation become a nurse of a soldier or something, don’t be so needy. People don’t think of us at all until they need tree work, same as I don’t think about kitchen fitting or prostate exams till the need arises. There will always be people doing the low skill level work in our job because it’s relatively easy to do, and the general public is happy to avoid paying top dollar for easy work. And you can’t blame them.

  9. Surely it’s a testament to the idea that freelance climbing is the natural step between employed climber and running your own thing. At at least it has been for many folks.

Just turning up with saws and ropes, never picking up a stick once it hits the floor and just signing autographs from soggy knickered teenage girls is one end of the spectrum. Taking your own Truck, chipper and groundy to do the other guy’s job and talk to the client is another. I still do a bit of both. (Not the autograph bit of course)
  11. Visual inspection? No way. Put it on the shelf, go indoors have a cup of tea. If the chain is blunt I’ll sharpen it if I feel motivated, otherwise I’ll do it in the morning before the lads turn up.
  12. Isn’t that normal? The 254 has a bigger engine, with a higher stated HP 3.9 against 3.75 for a 550.

Interesting thread, Nathanzac has taken a bit of a professional battering but being inexperienced is not a crime, you have to get experience, and you can only do that by biting the bullet and working full time for someone, with all the drudgery that can entail. You either resign yourself to that or actually sell your gear and go back to the warehouse. A year to 18 months more or less is a minimum to get up to speed for most.
  14. Lickfold is near my old village of Wisborough Green. Played football there, nice place.
  15. We removed the hessian and flattened the wire into the bottom of the hole, which helps with stability apparently, that’s what the supplier told us to do anyway.
