  1. 550 is the best saw on the market, a modern classic. All saws bigger than a topper are going to be a pita up a tree in comparison (to a topper)
  2. Out of curiosity when were you using a saw aerially? as the 020t has been knocking around since god was a boy.
  3. And a bit sad as well. A successful British manufacturing outfit swallowed up by a foreign company.
  4. Too many variables, you’re wasting your time.
  5. Reminds me of this oak I did for 2k on a Sunday just before I moved to France. Was yawing apart in the wind.
  6. Money is a consideration of course, but there are other factors. The security of knowing that your workers won’t (or at least are less likely to!) tell you on a Friday night that they’ve found someone who’ll pay more so that’s the last day they’ll do for you. They can more easily get credit and can start setting roots down which ties them to you more. The general feeling that you’re all in the same ship and that any progress (new machines etc.) is a reflection on them as well as you. None of those things are quantifiable, and there’s many arguments against it. But for me it’s a real step towards legitimacy and peace of mind.
  7. It depends, if the gaps are due to the trimming, ie the reduction in width of the hedge. If that is the case I wouldn’t worry a jot or bother with feeding. It’ll come back strong in the spring. If the holes appeared in the weeks afterwards due to defoliation it’s a different matter all together.
  8. If you’re dragging brash/doing groundwork you get paid at the end of the day or at the end of the week if you’re working all week. It’s part of the deal for getting poor money.
  9. Electric winches are good, can be used repeatedly but must be left to cool occasionally. Not an all day every day thing, but so much easier to fit.
  10. No bother, just make you’re own decision, don’t be swayed too much by internet opinions like mine.
  11. Sure, why twist when you’re already holding? I’m on an American forum as well and IMO something like a GM quad chip or a TW 230 would blow their minds if they used them for a day or two.
  12. On the odd occasion (recently a lot less of course) I come back I’m staggered at the chipper/chip truck combos everywhere. I sit there wondering how they can all be working!
  13. I know Vermeer rebrand Multione in yellow and sell them, was doing that ever an option?
  14. I rarely get involved in these this or that debates, but… Having owned both a TW and a Forst I’d get a TW every single time.
  15. Their small (50hp and under) are crap compared to the euro ones. The big ones are epic of course but this side of the pond we seem to err towards tractor and PTO combos for the larger work.
  16. Spied a nest in a spruce we were due to top on Friday, still active. Client was fine about turning it down (like they had a choice!)
  17. I think he’s referring to this.
  18. Then the free-lance should start his own gig, or find another company that will pay what they ask. Theres a shortage of workers at the moment, if you can’t command what you think you deserve in the current climate, you never will.
  19. Of course they (freelance guys) set the day rate, whether they get it or not is another issue. It’s got nothing to do with moving the industry forward.
  20. How’s that work? I thought you could tow 3.5 tonnes before you needed air brakes
