This is a pain in the arse situation. I too would be asking to help out in anyway I can. What makes it worse is he was asked to slow down. Unfortunately as Mick said the buck stops with you. I know things go wrong sometimes and mishaps happen, it's a part of life. Which is why I have taken to using my expensive equipment myself, unless it is someone I know and trust. I know it sucks having to pay him after he has dropped you in a crap situation but pay up and don't use him again. I am not the kind of bloke who will loose my rag with someone as I don't like confrontation if it can be avoided so I would (if he rings asking for work again) politely say sorry but unfortunately I only use people I can trust with my equipment. I would be mortified if I did this and have always put my hands up to the odd broken fence etc in the past and offered to fix the situation in my own time. I'd say that is one area you can cut down on costs. I spend around £50 a month on advertising, this includes a local paper and my website. Flyers only get handed out if people ask or I do a nice reduction on a big tree I may pop some through neighbours letter boxes. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

That seems really high to me, I've just done a quick add up of costs throughout the year. Truck, Fuel, Insurance, yard, phone, advertising etc and its working out around £55 a day (thats including taking away the weekends). But not including the unexpected costs like having to fork out £800 on fixing my chipper when the hydraulic pump decided to cock up. So with the unexpected costs, maybe £70 a day. How much do you spend on advertisement? because I know some people spend a fortune on this area of business and it can bring costs right up.

Ahh fair enough mate then yeah way over priced, it's the kind of job a retiree could knock out in a hour or so before brunch. £60 quid tops, or as said before bear tokens for an old mate. That's a good prise there. I'll hold off buying it and keep my fingers crossed haha. I will buy some tickets Steve, just want to sort my cash out and waiting to see how much my chipper fix is going to cost me. But will buy a handful at least by this time next week. Apparently there are pumps on eash roller as well, I'm guessing these are just small pumps. I know of the main one below the filler but the guy at listers said that there are pumps on the rollers as well. Hi may have just thought because other machines have pumps on the rollers mine would or maybe there are. I didn't check as I figured he had more of an idea that I do. Well I have taken it in to Listers this morning. They think it is air in the system, and more than likely from one of the pumps. They are going to pressure test them on Monday and hopefully find the issue. I think it's probably best to leave this one to the professionals as I might end up cocking the chipper up more. Hopefully I can get the chipper back by Friday for this job. Thanks a lot for the replies on this as I had it down to water in the system after what I'd been told. cheers for this reply. I will try and drop it in to a local hydraulic firm tomorrow morning. there is one round the corner from me. I personally can't see how any water has got in, let alone a large amount. Would pictures help to determine weather or not it is water or air in the system for you guys? if so I'll get a picture, or is it really that similar that you can't tell the difference?

I ran it earlier with the housing open and there was no sign of any oil squirting out of anywhere other than the filler cap. Will try again in the morning but I'm pretty sure it's water getting in and not air. The fluid that came out was like milk and there was a hell of a lot of it. I've checked over all the seals and they look fine. If I have to bleed the system and change the pump and filter then so be it but I need to make sure that I get all the water out. Do you know if I just let the whole lot drain for a day, would it be clear or do I need to get the air compressor out and blow the through the hoses? As I said to begin with I'm a little over my head with this but want to sort it (maybe a little for self satisfaction). Thanks for the replys Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
