  1. Agreed. They don't look like prize specimens. It could even be ash dieback but I'd need to see pictures of buds and shoots to be sure. I would also take them out and replant. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  2. Just out of curiosity why does a tree have to be planted prior to the one being felled? Surely it would make sense to remove the original then replant as close as possible after? Meaning your not putting a new tree near to a work zone where it may get damaged. I may be ignorant here but whenever I have had to replant due to a TPO being removed it's always been original down then replant ASAP (sometimes on the same day). Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  3. Usually just work gear as I quote after work. I do however stick a pair of trainers on that aren't caked in mud as I often have to go through house and trainers are easier to slip off than undoing the laces on the boots. Have toyed with the idea of top and tails though :-). Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  4. Vertical speed lines are pretty quick and straight forward. I'd go with that option to be on the safe side. Is the brash not a problem for the stones? One thing I will say about vertical speedlines that is common sense I guess is to keep them as tight as possible because if the log swings on a loose rope it can clip your toes or bounce to far at the base. I think the tree in the video is on a slope (if you look at the grown in the distance). Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  5. That's not a bad shout. At least you have a better idea of what strength the tree is. Mind you it could have made a mess if it was much Weaker that you thought. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  6. You need the new app. Old mill, it's the tap talk one. :-) Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  7. Agreed, last resort. I'd still be shitting myself and I'd probably climb about half way and think 'no not today'. Even if it is a promotion surely it would more professional to say no we need a Mewp and that would look better than bombing and hoping for the best. I've climbed some pretty rotten trees but I think that is pushing it especially at that height.. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  8. That's what I thought. It just seams ridiculous that he would risk himself like that. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  9. Lol oh yeah [ame] [/ame] Here you go.. oops Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  10. Just seen this on YouTube. Just interested to see if any of you lot would have risked this or what you think of this kind of work. I sure as hell wouldn't have put my knackers on the line for this. Maybe I'm just being over cautious. Still made it down alive, bet he needed a drink after that one. 11. Or use an air compressor to blast as much of the crap out after using WD40. May work the air compressor I have will usually clear most things I put in its way. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  12. I don't have T&C's on an invoice, if your working for other companies and invoice them most will pay on a set day of the week, you may have to case a few up but I've always been paid. If I'm doing one of my own jobs I put basic T&C's on my quote and point customers to my full T&C's on my website. As Felix has said it's 'after the fact' and you can't really enforce anything that late in to a contract. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  13. Not ever heard of them before. Out of curiosity why would you need knee pads in them? (as they are pretty well padded anyway). If you had to get knee pads maybe look at getting a pair of the external strap around ones. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  14. I've got a basic Facebook business page and it's served me well. If you join groups and get the misses and friends to give you recommendations and point to your page if someone inquires elsewhere about tree work. Once a few had been pointed in my direction others followed. My website is more professional and gives more information. But it's worth having a Facebook pages as it's free and costs little time. My only issue is as I am rarely on Facebook myself I have to set reminders to check my business page messages. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  15. I'm from bristol and I think graffiti is a great way to add modern culture to a city. Not an artist myself but it's more interesting than grey concert. Always fun winching out of a river... if it goes to plan :-). Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  16. ??? Do they want to kill off birds or something? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  17. Excellent stuff mate. Will look great in the airspace lobby I'm sure. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  18. I think it's just a excuse to be idle, working near electricity you need to maintain the correct safety distance or it as got to be isolated, I was talking to somebody in December who had started work for the local authorities, on his first day I asked how he'd got on, he told me that they had not set foot outside the van all day as it was raining. He said the lads don't work when it's raining as they will get their PPE and climbing equipment dirty. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk That would drive me mad, I couldn't sit in the van for a day even if I was getting paid for it. I've called off 2 jobs due to wether in my whole career as a arborist and both times were due to really heavy wind (one with a power line near by and another was a poplar that was snapping out as soon as my saw touched it). Never due to rain. May move jobs about now a days if it's a decent sized reduction and I want to make a good job of it. But I'll still find another job that can be done in the rain. 19. Sorry Steve I should've looked at the previous posts. Downloaded the new app and all works well again. Just got to get used to the new layout. Thanks for the reply John :-) Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  20. Is that the tap talk one that's got a different layout?
  21. Hi Steve. I've had a bit of an issue with accessing external links. Whenever I click on a link that someone has put up I just get this image on the screen. Started about 2 weeks ago. Probably something simple but I've tried everything. Any idea. Thanks in advance.
  22. Looks like a nice job. Fingers crossed it'll bounce back.
  23. I have recently been asked to give a beech a lovely 60% reduction :-/. I advised to fell and replant and that I would even come and do the planting for free as I just couldn't bear to do what was being asked of me, there was no way the guy was going to except my 30% reduction idea because "if I'm paying money I want to see a bloody difference". Put in my price and stressed that taking it down and replanting would be my preferred option and it wouldn't cost any more (as I'll take the hit for the firewood). Phoned up to check if it's in conservation and it's not. Just waiting to here back from the customer :-/.
  24. Looks like a nice bit of pulley work going on there mate. At least there was some justification for removal when you got to the stump. :-)
  25. I for one think the AA are a great organisation and companies that have that AA status seem to do fairly well out of it. However these tend to be companies that have been running for a long time and have build up the cash to throw at this kind of scheme. I am in no position to go arb approved as I still have a nice long list of kit to buy. This doesn't mean I don't work to the same standard as an AA contractor and clients can see this when I do a job for them. Not being arb approved has not ever been an issue for me as most my work is domestic and 90% of my jobs are from word of mouth, in my opinion I think this is still the best form of advertising and AA contractor would not gain me enough domestic work for me to justify it at the moment. To the OP what I'm saying is I'm a small business to and I don't feel I have ever needed any scheme to gain me more work. Maybe I'm wrong but I just think if you do a good job, work hard, are polite/friendly and leave the garden cleaner than you found it you will never be too short of work. Also out of curiosity how many people out there that own their own business have every been asked if they are Arb approved when quoting? I know I haven't. The only thing that I may be asked is am I insured or qualified.
