  1. As many would say, Id would have had a board of that yew! Whats the growth ring average on the chestnut? Any pics of the grain?
  2. Thiefrow was that bad thirty & even fourty years ago, A couple of baggage handlers from Slough became millionaires in very short order.. {Suitcases of undeclared currency against government policy on their way to Switzerland & Belgium..} Don't put anything valuable on an aircraft out of your view..
  3. For longevity, chestnut is best 4x better against untreated Douglas, & better than oak unless the oak has no sapwood & has a a year or two drying time before use. {just the outside case hardening of course .} Heartwood of European larch is brilliant to... but forget the fast grown jap larch crap. Larch or chestnut all the way...
  4. Any link to the thread showing this? Looks interesting.
  5. A copper coin left on the ground by your gatepost or front door , tells some theres money here.. Some places they save for the clan, others they want others to do the same... it muddys the waters... Dogs are great, but sadey only if there's a few of them & they don't eat meat thrown to them.
  6. Ive had 4 pairs of Oakley over the last 15/16 years & tried many more. For driving anything with wrap around polarized vr28 black iridium lenses is unbeatable, great for bright sunlight, ordinary light flickering light driving under trees & increasing contrast of colours aiding visibility. Even improve visibility driving in heavy rain.. The 2 pairs I use currently are 10 years old... Before that one pair I gave to a Girlfriends daughter the other ones, one lens got impaled by a splinter flying of a sledge hammer splitting logs with steel wedges.... I figure they ernt there keep.
  7. Guess its time to re register then!
  8. Many years ago I cut up many strange timbers, some up to 7000 years old, others just old timbers from dock cellars or river bottoms. If looking at what you've got & I wanted usable timber out of it, id cut it into 1 1/4 inch thick planks then cross cut out all the disturbed grain & knots, id guess you'll end up with loads of 18 inch long pieces that will dry fairly well & be usable in cabinetmaking as panels or even coffee tables in width. {Look at 80 Scandinavian/German designs for using short lengths on larger projects.} Sadly otherwise the warp twist & splitting will only leave it as use for decorative fire surrounds & pretend lintels... if your lucky. if not just firewood... Whenever I have a pile of crap I just cut the best from it... otherwise it just gets worse as it drys..
  9. Yep takes about a month to work but I've gone from 5 nuisance calls a day to one a week... If any UK firm carry on calling as soon as you say I am TPS registered & if you call again I will report you they really do stop...{IMHO.}
  10. Rays on second from left make it look like sycamore or maple... Sure it was all beech?
  11. Looks lovely, but probably not enough leg crossing, uncrossing & foot shuffling foot space... A greater overhang would really have made it impeccable for a few course dinner with friends,family lovers etc., rather than a quick cornflakes or a bowl of soup, sort of thing. {Timewise that is.}
  12. It is in my experience of slow grown straight grained material... Id guess the faster the growth the more movement , but could be wrong..
  13. Nightmare!
  14. No vapour barrier & battens? That will go very wrong.
  15. Shame for the sheep... They lose as many as 270 from one field in a night in Devon on occasion.. The NFU say they go straight in the food chain... But then I guess they would... But whoever does it clearly has working collies, the transport & the connections.
  16. This chap agrees.... [ame= ] [/ame] One can even chat with like minded people on a forum.. Sample thread... My extensive collection
  17. That makes sense... Down here in sub tropical Devon this year the sap was only down for a couple of months or so! But climates vary.
  18. I think you have the choice white boards & a few bent or grey & straighter?
  19. Lovely wood, when not spiral growth! Very stable once dry. Can split on nailing unless predrilled & steel or iron nails will cause black stains from the tannin, so use copper or bronze or some such. I guess. Bit softer than some, but so is pine, just don't dance in hobnails or stiletos on it to on a daily basis...
  20. Even air dried sycamore gets that tired look, traditionally each board was stood upright against a wall separately or in racks with spacers at very top so only end few inches get sticker stain.
  21. Ahh you sure? [ame= ] [/ame] & to prove alcohol, crowds & flamethrowers go well together... [ame=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdmrYK46kIc]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdmrYK46kIc[/ame]
  22. & in the end it was?
  23. Almost an infamous rare walnut tree! Nice & straight oak & lots of sapwood, is it a turkey oak?
  24. Cheers Will, We picked the Parana pine up of your dad this morning... Great stuff! spiral
  25. Lovely! thumbup1:
