  1. Just took this baby for a blast... Not as easy as it looks
  2. High chaparral..., showing your age now, Stubby. Real vintage stuff.
  3. Nice pics, Simon That looks like Coombe Abbey. Must have been a good gig.
  4. The only things I think I would use in my first aid (and I hope I never have to, obviously) are large plasters for silky saw cuts (so that I could continue working) and the large wound dressings and the celox granules (which didn't even come with the kit!) I think anything else would get thrown out of the way very quickly in the event of an emergency.
  5. Arbtalk , the one and only... Nice one Jon
  6. Johnny. Button on the joystick is to disengage power to the wheels so you can use the revs to power up the hydraulics. Bit like a quick clutch but you don't use it to change gears. If that makes sense.
  7. Yeah, I had the same email a couple of weeks ago. Also it gave the IP address.
  8. A wire core flip line is classed as PPE All components should have EN numbers on. Each component should have a CE number on. All items for climbing such as ropes, harnesses, connectors, and mechanical devices should be subject to thorough examination every six months. A wire core flip line falls into this category.
  9. The short answer is YES, ... But you need to put a soft link somewhere in the system so that it can be cut away in a rescue situation. e.g a small dyneema cut away strap girth hitched to a side D then put your caribiner into the strap.
  10. One of our guys using a pole saw on a holly the other day. Thought this might make for an interesting thread...
  11. Now that is a chipper...... I bet you need good ear defenders and your wits about you when working near that.
  12. Tree work is my day job. Running a men's alcohol and drug recovery centre is mine and my wife's main occupation. Never a dull moment.
  13. Drove past this on the M6 Staffs heading north two weeks ago. Think it was dragging fuel. The driver was throwing it about a bit.

Phostoxin should do the trick. Agricultural suppliers usually stock it. Not sure if you still need a licence to use it.
  15. Nice one Reg. Presumably you use one set of rings at the high point and then the second set moves around the tree with you as you work around it?
  16. Hot knife. Our local dealer has cut rope ends for us free of charge before now.
  17. Hi Spud, I just found out our ms441 is actually a 440. Can it be ported etc ? I know you said that the 441 couldn't be ported. Is the 440 any different? If so we would like to get it done. Thanks Timon
  18. Same issues here when I first started using mine. I automatically set my hitch now as I tend slack almost without thinking.. Perhaps have a spell using a michoacan eye tie hitch while you get used to the set up. (I still prefer this hitch over the VT, personally) Again like the others have said by making slight alterations to the length and type of hitch/hitchcord will help you overcome this. Try adding another wrap or braid, or putting twists in the cord which can alter its characteristics as well. Practicing these things in a low wide tree will help you gain confidence in your new set up. Hope this helps.
  19. We're continually posting them. It forms the backbone of all our businesses really.... Furniture shops, landscaping teams and treework. We're also in yellow pages and on the internet. We also get a lot by word of mouth recommendations.
  20. We do both.. We have dedicated teams that systematically cover our areas
  21. On our furniture donation flyers it's there in bold, but on our tree flyers and landscape gardening flyers it's only in small print. Sometimes being a charity can work against you..., people think you're going to do dirt cheap work or you aren't very capable, etc... I have noticed over the years it's the repeated covering of areas with good quality flyers that gets the responses. In other areas of the country we have found that just one run in an area doesn't yield that much, possibly because people might think that perhaps you are just a "fly by night" operation if you get my drift.... When they see your flyers more than once then it kind of sticks in their minds and they are more likely to take them seriously. When I do quotes I'm often surprised by how many people don't realise we are a charity.
  22. Flyers are our best advertising, we get between 30-40 quotes per week in the summer and 20-30 in the winter. We put a LOT of flyers out though.

I use the ultra o's on my hitch climber and on my zigzag and zillon side strop. Then I use boas or rhinos on the working ends. For the hitch on my flip line I use a boa and also a boa on the working end.
  24. I can understand why people like the look of them... Very exotic looking almost like they belong on another planet! It's only when you get in amongst them you realise how vicious they are to work on. This one has been a bit of a rite of passage for me being relatively new to this game. I really appreciate everyone's encouraging comments. Thanks Timon
