  1. Sounds good Steve. Maybe if I take send you some pics before hand you'll be interested in a couple of more interesting bits in exchange for a few regular ones. That way I'm not coming empty handed. And the nice stuff doesn't get butchered! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. Yeah I had to get rid of my starter lathe months ago to make space for this. So I've been steadily trying to collect some decent blanks ready to go and watching a lot of YouTube haha. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  3. I bet you'd thought I'd taken them chisels from you and then given up 2 month later eh Steve haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. That's something I thought when I unpacked the stand and started building it. The cross members are all nice and heavy but the legs are like a bit of tin!
  5. Unfortunately that is beyond my grasp haha. However it's not going to be difficult to add the brickwork for an extra foot on the length and width when funds allow
  6. Well almost. My wife bought me a CL3 for Christmas. It was a complete surprise. I don't know how she went about choosing one but I'm pretty pleased with her choice. However it was gonna take a serious re think of the shed layout just to get it in there! I then decided let's not do this half arsed. This is going to need a concrete base to be fixed to to get the best out of it. So we had to wait for some half decent weather to be able to empty the shed, move it and then get the brickwork and concrete laid. This was first step on the existing concrete pad Then dismantle the shed and rebuild minus the wooden base And today I've set up the lathe and ran it in Still got some work to do. Going to put another plug socket on that side of the shed and need to put cabinets across the back wall to get all the other crap out the way. I can't wait to start making shavings again though Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. What a beauty. Double yolker? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  8. Haven't really got much to add about what does well in Ireland's climate, but one bit of advice that is often repeated in the allotment magazines is if you're limited to space try and grow a premium crop. Especially if you're trying to save yourself on the food bills look at what the more expensive fruit and vegetables are that you actually buy and try and grow those. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  9. Very nice [emoji106] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  10. The manuals for chainsaws in the army tell us to use OEP220 which in English is gearbox oil. A lot thicker than vegetable oil like a lot of you are saying to use. I take it the army are just getting this really wrong (nothing new there). They would probably say there's not enough call to justify procurement of a specific oil but maybe there's a more suitable oil already in the system. Sorry for the slight derail
  11. I had some beech last year that looked just like that. It dried perfect and burned without a problem. There's a post somewhere with a couple of pics I think Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I want to keep an eye on this thread Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I'd be upset if I'd picked up two car fulls of elm haha. Definitely too nice to log the lot though Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Sorry for the delay. Got home in the dark and left in the dark. Couple of close ups hopefully clear enough Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Thanks Python, I feel a bit necky doubting the pro just I had never seen ash that colour. Steve, I'll try and get you a better shot in daylight if you like. Its pretty heavy but not oak or beech heavy. Don't know about hard or soft tbh, all i did was chuck it in the car then chuck it on the driveway. I actually thought the first load which had been cut that day had a smell of chocolate when it was in the car. But my nose has been thumped too many times to be relied on
  16. Sorry it's another one! There was some felling works just outside of work this week so went and asked about the wood. Bloke said yeah help yourself when we're gone, there's some nice ash over there and nodded towards a heap. There were two different types of tree, one i thought was beech, and this stuff. Is it diseased ash or something else. I'll be taking some blanks from it before turning it into firewood because I think it's a great colour. Thanks for the help again Sorry there's no brash or buds to show Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Didn't go to a Boxing Day meet going to try and drag the wife to New Year's Day. Hopefully there's a meet not too far away Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Really nice stuff there Steve. Especially like the syc and the cherry Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Cheers Steve. I'll have a word with him and see if I can get to it. Although if it was gonna spalt it might have already. Pretty sure it's been dead at least all summer, even though it was in good leaf Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. https://www.facebook.com/groups/woodalertuk/ I think the guy who started it is on here. I think I found it here but can't remember Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. I don't understand the p-taking on this one. There's been plenty of offers here in the past of free wood. I'm also on a Facebook group set up purely for tree surgeons to find free tip sites for chip and Arb waste. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  22. I won't be able to turn it if I drop it now though. What's the best option. Drop it and leave it a few weeks, or wait until I'll be able to get it straight on the lathe Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  23. No problem Jon. Your derail is amazingly relevant. I'm trying to plan a use for my in laws cherry tree that has died. I'll likely be dropping it in December when I've finished for Xmas Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Ok good news. If turning a lamp then would you go with turning green so that the pith has been drilled out and then put aside to dry Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  25. If you were going to turn something tall and narrow like a vase or lamp, could a section of a smaller tree be used, or would it be better to have a larger diameter that has been quartered so you don't have the pith. Thanks, Mick Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
