  1. Just been trawling the web for chisels and came across this site which gives pointers and advice for beginners, as well as selling equipment. Theres a few different sets and the first one seems like it would suit me and my lathe according to his blurb. Just wanted to ask if those in the know would agree with what he says, or is it just marketing speil, ie. the bit about shorter chisels for smaller lathes. Turning_Sets Any opinions or advice welcome thanks, Mick
  2. Sounds like rewarding work difflock
  3. Ex squaddie fen?
  4. I'll rip a few bits in half and put them in the loft for seasoning for when I've got my chisels bought. Most of it will be firewood though
  5. Field maple I believe. Probably no use to you I'm guessing as it's quite light
  6. Ok Steve. There's a second species there but looking at the heap from the kitchen window they all look like nice straight rings. I'll let you know if I find anything when I look properly. That's if green is any use anyway
  7. There's some stuff been dumped on my drive way today and there's some decent sized Union lumps. But it's freshly cut. I think it's cherry but if it's of any use I'll get some pics
  8. This could be a solution as well Steve. I'll show him your work on the bowl thread
  9. That sounds like it might be beyond my expertise but I'll mention it to him as an option if he got a pro in
  10. Do you suspect that was the start of the trees demise. To my untrained eye there's no sign of the tree trying to heal that cut. I never asked how long ago it was done
  11. Thanks for comments lads. I'd love to do something similar in waney edge boards. One day might invest in a chainsaw mill
  12. Empty and bare. I also added diagonal bracing after I took this pic that you can't see in the first pic, and boarded over the front posts which you can see in the first one. 2.5M wide
  13. My father in law (builder) let me have a pile of roofing boards, the same week as a cousin gave us half a dozen reclaimed fence posts so I knocked this up while I've got the weekend off to tidy the front of the house up and keep the missus happy. Fixings and paint were already in the shed so has only cost time
  14. Thanks for replies. Confirms what I thought really but I'm no expert. The bark seems to be coming away almost, if not all the way round so don't know if there's any cambium layer in tact but it's still in good leaf
  15. I can still only do one pic at a time
  16. It's in my father in laws garden and they'd be really upset to lose it but it not looking very healthy round the base. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks
  17. I knew there'd be a silver lining there somewhere No splitting equipment here skyhuck I'm too tight for that when I'm not processing them to sell
  18. Turns out ringing up knotty bits of pine to 10-14" rings to be split with an axe was pretty dumb. Won't make that mistake twice
  19. To be honest I don't think that's typical of the price difference. I've spent 3 of my last 4 summers in Canada and I'm always looking for a bargain to bring home. In 2010 I was looking at home owner grade stihls and it was pretty much on par with uk. Exchange rate was worse then though. I've tried on all types of products that I've wanted at the time clothing electronics tools and if the exchange rate is good it might save 10-20%. Normally the best deal for me has been to buy off uk Amazon then claim back the VAT as forces serving overseas. America is a different story though
  20. Thanks spandit. I had imagined that the trees would be planted in place and then grown into the arch. If I grow them elsewhere then cut them to build the arch will they put roots down. The pic doesn't show it very well but that one was coming into leaf Thanks again, mick
  21. First off I don't know if this is in the right place. On holiday last week and the wife clocked one of these and thought, as they do, that it would be nice to have something similar in our garden. I've got a few questions I'm hoping someone here can answer please 1. Are these beyond the ability of an average gardener 2. Would I be able to get willow that is big enough to create this straight off or is it a long term project 3. What sort of money if I can buy them big enough is it going to be. The arch in the picture had 24 trees by my count. I'd probably be looking at 12-16 I think. Thank you, mick
  22. Thats pretty cool python. Are they tame enough to be taken outside and allowed to fly

    Cedar

Just to clarify, by girth of 5.5 metres, thats circumferance, not diameter?
  24. Just returned from a visit to family in the North East. I was at an uncles house and he was burning logs and coal on an open fire so I asked where his logs come from 'Oh we get a builders bag dropped off by some gypo's for 25 quid' They were all hardwood and seemed pretty dry what i seen of them. I reckon I'd be paying £80-100 for that down Hampshire. Can anybody beat that. It wasnt special mates rates or owt. Just a knock on the door and now they've bought they're on these blokes regular round
