  1. That's a beauty twig
  2. Might do that Steve. I've got a couple of weeks on Salisbury plain first though. There's some tearing on the outside I don't know if it's showing up much on the pic. Maybe should of had a sharpen then gave it another couple of passes. Might have tidied up a little. Just want to stick another blank on there now and have another bash haha
  3. There was a bit of a fissure in the blank that I was trying to get out. After initially taking the entire bowl down equally I decided to take it down at the base then flare it back out at the top so I didn't have to cut as much away. This is u oiled still here
  4. Not great as I left a lot of tooling marks. Also struggled to get a good finish on the base, but the missus was giving me earache lol so I rubbed it down and oiled it with boiled linseed as I had it to hand. When she seen the finished item she was quite impressed so hopefully she'll stop thinking I'm just pissing about in the shed now she's seen the possibility for 'pretty things' haha It's beech and without measuring I'd say 6" diameter. It might well split in half in the next few weeks:biggrin:
  5. Thank you both. No doubt if I get stuck I'll be back on here haha
  6. Ah ok. Thanks for the tip.
  7. Ok thanks. I've got 4 halves of this so might try both methods. Bowl gouge should turn up this week from eBay
  8. Ok. I had planned on only roughing out to a thick wall then leaving to dry. Do you think I'd get away turning it to finished. To be honest this won't be the on the lathe until I've had some more practice on the smaller bits and bobs and I feel confident of producing something vaguely bowl shaped haha
  9. Just cut this ring of birch and I was wondering the best use of it for bowl blanks. Should I half it through that Union on the side, or across, so that the union would be at the base of that bowl. Thanks
  10. That tweak has got it back to normal thanks spud. I'll keep an eye on the fuel lines etc for fuel leak and see how they get on. Eddie, I should have always been on aspen really. Fuel sits in the shed too long and I notice it can be harder to start after a while. It's not going to cost me much extra a year and will hopefully be better for the saw in the long run
  11. Just had this chat tonight. The same week they announce the odds of winning tripling to 45000000-1 is a week when there was a draw for a quadruple rollover! So how often is it going to be won now. Judging by this thread and my own thoughts ticket sales and therefore jackpots will actually be lower. Seems like a huge mistake to me
  12. I was told that the constant clipping of a small amount is better for the turf rather than being cut once a week. Or sometimes in my case once a fortnight if it rains at the weekend lol
  13. Ok thanks spud. I videoed it rather than try to explain it but can't figure out uploading it lol
  14. My stihl 038 AV Super dies off when I put throttle on then picks up to normal speed. The H & L screws are 1 turn out. The chain doesn't move on idle. It's on its first tank of aspen after always being ran on pump petrol. Any ideas please
  15. Would that make them self fertile, as its 3 seperate trees sharing a central stem or does it not work like that. Assuming they aren't self fertile varieties used anyway. Thanks
  16. Would you do that in unvented bags that are left exposed to weather?
  17. Great looking furniture
  18. I've ordered a cheap bench grinder with a white wheel for the end of the week. I'll probably just turn logs into shavings for a while just playing about to see what I can do. I'm already eyeing bits up in firewood pile that might be worth turning haha
  19. To Steve seventhdevil. I called round to his place Saturday and he spent a good few hours trying to impart some knowledge to help me get started with turning, gave me some instruction on his set up and sent me on my way with a fistful of chisels for nowt.
  20. That is a great offer thanks very much Steve. I was still hoping to be able to take you up on the offer of a crash course as well if possible. I'll have a look at the Axminster grinder now
  21. Ok. What about this. It's cheap but I expect it will only get occasional use http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=311369824795 Thanks for all the help, Mick
  22. Going off the original topic a bit but if a decent quality whetstone suitable for sharpening the gouge shaped chisels. That seems like it's go. A be a skill in itself to master
  23. Well that looks easy enough really good video that even if the blokes at work thought I was watching 80s porn from the soundtrack haha. I'll keep my eyes on eBay.
  24. Thanks gonna get on YouTube now. By the way, what the hell is being made on your profile pic lol
  25. This is my lathe http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/86452-ive-been-gifted-lathe.html The guys own advice was to buy individually to be honest but it just seemed easier to start with a set then add as required. Mostly hoping to turn bowls
