  4. Yeah I didn't really buy that part. Its trying to say its a version off this idea i think? Human-Plant Coevolution: A modelling framework for theory-building on the origins of agriculture WWW.REPOSITORY.CAM.AC.UK Human-Plant Coevolution (HPC) model The Human-Plant Coevolution (HPC) model Human-plant interaction is a specific case of animal-plant interaction, which spans predator- prey, mutualistic and symbiotic relationships. All ecological relationships consistent in time are driven by coevolution, where each party exerts selective pressures on the other, eventually redefining their genetic (and cultural) construct [53, 56–58]. Under mutualistic coevolution, the interaction between two populations increases the total potential return or carrying capac- ity of the environment for each species. At the same time, it also modifies the selective pres- sures acting over the populations involved. In this light, plant domestication is similar to other mutualistic relationships, where coevolution made possible the emergence of certain traits, manifested at physiological, morphological and behavioural levels; e.g., insects and fungi [59] and ants and acacias Did humans domesticate plants, or did they domesticate us? | Salon.com WWW.SALON.COM Scientists are trying to better understand the origins of agriculture, and how we coevolved with our favored crops Specific to heather: Heather burning has affected evolution PARTNER.SCIENCENORWAY.NO Heather seeds germinate faster after a fire.Though only in cultural landscapes.
  5. That looks like it makes the job faster & easier shame you can't get them now? I like that design better than the ebay roller bearing type one. Seems now its just a throw away culture for things that can be fixed - even for stuff thats little bother. Im guessing time taken with that tool is only about the same time as it takes for sharpening a chain.
  6. I actually have started hammering my worn bar rails closed to get more life out of worn old bars & was surprised that it works well. In the USA they even sell special toosl for doing it. Chainsaw Bar Rail Tightening Repair Tool 100% STAINLESS STEEL, MADE IN AMERICA WWW.EBAY.COM If you do any serious amount of chainsaw work you know bars get out of shape very quickly. This tool is designed to close... Don't think its something thats done much in the UK? Wonder if shops in the USA offer it as a service?
  7. Humans shape a landscape to suit the heather & heather predominance shapes human history The thesis is of heather being a keystone ecological species abit like the wolves in yellowstone intertwined with humans history and the heath as a cultural landscape. Heather burning has affected evolution PARTNER.SCIENCENORWAY.NO Heather seeds germinate faster after a fire.Though only in cultural landscapes. My personal take & going abit off tangent is: Alot of consevation effort now taken to preserve this plagioclimatic vegetation on degraded soil. Its an ecological niche for certain rare species but overall its a greatly less productive habitat in total wildlife biomass as the soil is very nutrient poor. Other such cultural degraded lanscapes are often seen as a negative - desertification soil erosion caused by overgrazing etc. overgrazing ESDAC.JRC.EC.EUROPA.EU From above link: Heathland could also be regarded as ruined lanscape. Heatland conservation to me seems abit like fighting against the tide due to the ongoing efforts required to maintain it in statis, as the historical agricultural practices that were used creating the lanscape in the first place no longer occur.
  8. Makita plans to stop making all 2 strokes & also all 4 strokes i think.

  10. I thought 4 stroke chainsaws like the dolmar one was a dead & end batteries the new future. I remember some hype about hydrogen fuel cell laptops? Fuel cell chainsaws?
  11. Just checked the makita manual. Says approx 5g per 100hrs
  12. How one modest shrub entrapped humans in its service | Aeon Essays AEON.CO As Neolithic people transformed prehistoric forests, they stumbled into an ecological trap. Domestication goes both... Thought this article was an interesting viewpoint on heather....
  13. I thought viking axes were "bearded"

  17. Had to get new bearings after probably well less than 50hrs for mine . Since then I now I grease more often. (hard to actually keep a track of hrs of use?) Anyway probably done a few 100hrs since (guestimate) no further issues yet. The gearbox is seperate from the rest grease can't really escape unless the bearings fail
  18. Yeah I grease mine just the same as i would a petrol one.
  19. 20. Weed supression more important than any temporary N robbing imo. so id say fresh and if possible use layers of cardboard under also. From my experience even if you use tonnes of fresh woodchip it disapears really fast. Ideal would be using something that lasts a few yrs more but is still biodegradable like felted wool or hemp sack cloth but thoose cost more.
  21. A Larger box would favour the rounds taking less space as less large edge gaps
  22. Chainsaw chaps are terrible ungainly clumsy things to wear imo. Trousers are far superior and less faff.
  23. They would be better off in ireland its wealthier than the UK now.
  24. Shame you don't live near the guy in the Help in return for firewood. thread asking to do jobs like this "free" in exchange for some % of the logs.
