  1. Please let us know how you get on with, which bits get on your wick and what you'd change. I'm currently going through the various similar options. A bit of operator insight could help me make the right decision. Thanks Shaun
  2. Slim Jim ? He has a cousin in denmark - Bjorn Slippy. Where's me coat?
  3. Used one on a ford 1910 compact tractor on the estate where I was working. Not great results. Very dependent on perfectly smooth ground. Every hollow or lump in ground was amplified by length of arm especially on balloon turf saver tyres. Clean cutting edge though I'd have to go over it twice as some light twigs would be brushed flat and then spring back again afterwards. Ended up using stihl hs85 for faster better cutting. Gimmick rather than time saver Shaun
  4. I run cooper stt's on my well loaded defender, pulling a deadweight ifor williams trailer and sawmill unit . Good off road and well behaved on road even in the wet. I used to chain up with snow chains to get in soft fields before these fitted. Seem to be wearing well too.
  5. I saw this guy maybe two years ago as a warm up act to guns and roses in dublin . He was side splittingly good, without shouting at ya or bein full of overtly crude rubbish. Rock on Piff !!
  6. I charge by the hour with a minimum of 3 hrs to cover loading/ unloading /set-up. Time rates mean if there's time wasted by me having to handle or haul logs around the site its covered in the cost. Breakdowns and f@@k- ups are my problem and are taken back out of the cost - very clearly. I explain fully to the customer what I expect re site preparation, that way they get to appreciate that they're paying me as a sawyer, anything else is wasting their own money. I charge a distance fee over 30 miles, I could be earning money elsewhere in that lost hour for longer distance work. Explain all of this right at the initial site visit or enquiry stage and you're well covered, there's no ambiguity or mis understanding, but do it pleasantly and politely, and with the aim of having a good relationship with the client every time and it should work for you too. Shaun
  7. (Bloody phone !!) .....brave enough to use this line
  8. Nice one. I hope one day I'm brave
  9. Must make for a fun time when it rains - I'll get my camera
  10. Another vote for the claw hammer . Weight speed and leverage works every time
  11. I also got quote on mobile dimension mill from usa, but set up time on site was slow simmilar transport issues and built to order up to 3months plus 2week shipping. Went to see and use one.-what a great mill, would be on my lotto list. Any help I can give apart from my customers give me a call. S C Milling. Shaun
  12. Tom vanstone as mentioned earlie runs the supermill, hope that helps
  13. I was looking at the minimax mill price then was $nz 44,400 with a slabbing unit as well. Still a whole heap of cost. Ya going to have to do a lot of work to cover that - and don't be taking mine !
  14. That price was october last year from NZ to Cork direct from mahoe mills. Tom vanstone at mobilesawmills uk recommended this route as exchange rates weren't good then, god only knows what they are now.
  15. It doesnt really matter what saw you have the way to make any income milling comes down to efficient layout and handle the timber as little as possible. Dont let it touch the ground til you've finished working it - you'll only have to pick it up again. -experience
  16. If ya going static why start with a mobile mill? Surely much more efficient and adaptable fixed mills would do this better and without manual works involved with any mobile set up. Seems a curious route to go down especially with the purchase cost quoted last year € 24750 shipped to port of cork. You could do a lot with a big circular and resaws ,or band mills for this. Shaun
  17. I did consider getting one of these until I made a mock- up of the unit to test manoeuvrability. (I had concerns already at this point) . Anyway total length including drawbar was 8.2 m with axles placed just beyond centre, as you're also in west Cork you know what the small farm roads gateways and farmyards are like for 90° turns and tight accesses. The mockup couldn't get up my twisty lane without riding up into the fuschia hedges and stone ditches and grounded out frequently. All in all it was just too long for this area and couldn't be shortened without major engineering. - I didn't buy one !! Shaun
  18. Took my bad one last year limb walking and cutting side branches as I went out. Limb suddenly snapped out from underneath me, saw reaching out front pulled me upside down , unbelievably disorientated , hoped to grab a branch or kick off trunk but just not enough time . A 30 foot tended rope was a great swing straight into the trunk - smashed ribs on one side and thigh muscle, you cant believe how debilitating being badly winded is in a harness !!. Luckily could just still reach the prussik to get down as my heavy groundy would probably have busted even more branches getting up to me. God it happens fast and you really don't know which way is up. The confusion is something I don't think you can prepare for. Shaun
  19. Thanks for that, TurtleWoods. It complements the german and bulgarian ones I've already downloaded ! However its still not the parts diagrams/manual that I'm really looking for. Anyone ?
  20. Have only ever used bump heads but take off the blade from the guard. Try not pay out too much at once. I can tell from engine load sound what is good. Any overload I blow off against a post or stone ,if im not cutting hard woody growth, when it happens naturally. Just curious as to what mqkes other heads better before I buy
  21. Sorry to hijack this thread, but does anyone know of an open access place to get parts diagrams for a honda um616 roughcut? The only one of found was in Polish and has now closed me out? Apologies again, carry on
  22. By using this type of head are you not wasting a lot of cord- namely the length crossing the head every time you snap or wear out? Surely the bump heads allow a more constant control of cord length to optimum speed/load and only waste the central area once. Also as long as cords don't break at the eyelet there's no time lost in paying out more cord.
  23. The list of sizes excludes .404 . Can this be done wirh this grinder somehow? Always sharpen my chainsaws by hand , but the lucas mill with 190 links gives me blisters every time. !!
  24. Bloody sensative phone - I hadn't finished ! Anyway flywheel picked up water from lake as hoped but instead of spraying it all round engine just powered the lot down air injection tube !! One day she'll be reborn I hope
  25. I've still got the sad bones of my 262xp. Beaut of a saw, what speed /power/ no weight but appalling reputation for seizures. This was good till doing some lakeside clearance work it caught fire (grass debris). My immediate reaction to use the flywheel of still running saw to put out flames
