  1. Dalton trees .....it would appear from what you have said that "acts of god" are not covered by insurance then why have insurance ? I would assume you personally would act in a non negligent way with regards to your own trees and if it was a storm which caused them to fall and cause injury / damage to others then your insurers would say they will not accept any claim against you , or could the injured party then attempt to sue ,by trying to prove negligence ?? ... If the situation is such that any damage caused by falling trees / branches was always the responsibility of the owners / insurers then surely many would find this unacceptable and who would then have trees on their property ??, especially in high risk target areas ( roads for example ) . It does surprise me whilst travelling around how many trees I see that to me are a bit dodgy and would not like to be responsible for , yet , it is rare to hear of any incidents .
  2. A fascinating thread this one !! .... The OP's title was a bit mis-leading which seems to have got a few members wound up , however only 1 person has actually looked at this job and it would appear ( by price ) he has assessed it is a day for 2 , which too me seems excessive for a cut and drop job , no chipping, rigging etc etc ...If the one who priced it was a "PRO " why was he offering cash no VAT !? ..... it would appear to me that this job would suit a subby / freelance climber , without the overheads of a fully tooled up company . The point of needing a "rescue climber " present was raised by several respondents , which is legitimately correct , yet a while back Reg Coates did a thread about lone climbing and the majority agreed that it was OK. Glad the OP got back to this thread and is not "offended " too much , but i am curious as to why he wants it cut in this manner and not felled ??
  3. A mate of mine uses a pecker on large rings , just to break in to liftable lumps to put on the splitter bench , starts on the edge usually to avoid getting stuck , also the digger ( 3 ton ) is the power pack for the hydraulic splitter and is used with a reverse bucket for loading / shifting , in effect the one machine does a lot as well as digging when required , seems pretty efficient to me but however you do it logs are a LOT of work !!!!
  4. was it painted by "barksy "?
  5. You could try a bit of carving and light work , walking sticks , spoons and the like , that can be done sat down and quite an "in" thing at the moment ,a few months and you could be quite proficient and possibly have some for sale ....just a suggestion ....
  6. Police arrested 2 men for theft , 1 was caught with a load of batteries and the other had fireworks ......they "charged " the first 1,and the second 1 got "let off " !!!
  7. Are the Ash being felled as an attempt at disease control ? or are they dead and a safety issue ? and how big are they ?
  8. I really enjoy it when some one makes it very apparent that they are very left wing now ...I take almost immediate dislike to them and they are just so easy to offend with just a few comments / opinions !!!!! In their opinion I should hang my head in shame because I watched "it aint half hot mum" 30 years ago ....
  9. Glue - titebond ( waterproof )----Finish - Chestnut ( brand ) food safe finish , see Axminster powertools ... I do not know about routing , possible hygiene problem in recesses ??
  10. In addition to the above ....you can only sell 2 m3 per calendar quarter without felling license ...
  11. Really sorry to hear that Gobby .... hope things improve swiftly .... amazing/ unfortunate to get so much damage from only 3 metres , nasty stuff is gravity !! I bet your head will be overloaded with ideas of things to make and how to do them etc etc by the time you are back at it again ....Terry ..
  12. I remember that name ....I was felling a big Beech tree in Dartmouth Naval College ...a long time ago and got something in my eye and was sent to the medical centre on campus and it was him who sorted it out .....
  13. My uncle was in a hunt on Exmoor and every year for many years he said they lost / put down more horses and dogs than the number of foxes killed !!
  14. Look on my Facebook page below , I do loads of it , yes specialist tools are used , they are turned on an electric lathe when the wood is unseasoned / green (easier !) I do not have any pics of tools or work in progress I am afraid ...
  15. Yes , nice bit of wood , was covered in cow shit and mud where it had fallen out of a farm woodland into a field where it stayed for a few years , until I was asked to cut and shift it to allow a new fence to be erected , sadly a lot of the log had been hacked at and most removed by farmer and was only a short fat bit left .....
  16. It is not common and hard to spot , that is why it is valuable ,I know of one estate where the woodsman has chopped triangular windows through the bark to try and find some .After felling any Ash or Syc you should be able to spot it , along the vertical section of your hinge , or just cut one ring and then split it .
  17. Ripples in figured wood run hoizontally across the grain the opposite to what you have shown , I have had and used rippled syc and ash and it really is gorgeous stuff but what you show is not rippled ...See left hand side of rippled Ash bowl below ...
  18. The owners of said trees could find themselves in trouble if they had not dealt with the potential danger in a reasonable time frame though ....
  19. I have , years ago on many occasions attended scenes of fallen trees in the road and on other property where damage has been caused but have never really found out if any one is liable in the end . I know it seems negligence usually needs to be proven to claim against owner of tree , but in the above case I would be surprised if the insurers of the cars damaged did not pursue the owner of the tree for costs .
  20. So if there was nothing to suggest there was anything wrong with this tree and assuming the homeowner is insured ( or not ? ) will the people injured and who's car was damaged be able to claim against owner ?? Also who covers the cost of the clearing up ??

this very subject cropped up on a different forum a while back with "eco" extremists claiming it is a wonder plant and never harms trees , I think a picture says more than words
