  1. Welcome back on the tools. There are a lot of us old gits still doing it everyday although I climb very rarely these days. Spikes are a personal preference, I use old school bashlins & love them, I like the weight of them.
  2. Thanks for the offer of carving with you Mark, I might take you up on it when I'm a little more competent. Thanks for the support fellas, keep making saw chips. Cheers Darren
  3. Hello everyone, Do any of you carve solely for a living or also supplement income from other areas? The reason I ask is I was inspired to carve after seeing the work on here & managed to sell around ten mushrooms last year in a local shop ( very surprised to say the least as the pics below were my first attempts).
  4. We had decking at our old house, never again, couldn't keep the algae at bay so was like an ice rink when wet. I lost count of the amount of money spent trying to keep it from being slippery. Great in a dry country but awful in a wet country.
  5. Yeah, I wish it was in my yard but they wanted it left on site for the parishoners to take when they wanted it.
  6. This was a job last year removing a load of sycamores behind a church.
  7. For some though Ben, logs are their main source of income & for others logs supplement their other business interests or like myself, all of the logs I generate from tree work I use at home so I don't have to buy them.
  8. Sorry to hear you got cleaned out. It's happened to me too, so you are not alone. I now approach anyone I see sitting in a motor near my home or where we are working and ask what they are doing, it shows you are aware & being vigilant, if I note I'm being followed I just keep driving, pulling over etc.
  9. If it doesn't belong to you it's stealing, so it's about time it was taken a bit more serious by the authorities, after all for some it's how we earn a living.
  10. I cut some old sleepers for a customer last week & the smell of creosote was still really strong & these were Victorian sleepers. I wouldn't want to risk them leaking nasties into the water.
  11. I agree with all of the above in respect of being honest. You have to think about your own safety as well as others & undertaking work in which you are out of your comfort zone can sometimes lead to accidents.

Fantastic work. You've really brought the grain to life.
  13. A cheaper option would be to follow your employee & catch them selling your produce in the act.
  14. So wish I could of cancelled yesterday & joined you on this one Rich. Awesome job.
  15. We had potatoes thrown at us once while removing a knackered leylandii.
  16. I found this one in a second hand book shop.
  17. A good book for general knowledge & i.d is the Hillier guide to trees & shrubs. Expensive though. A large part of learning arboriculture is correct i.d. of species.
  18. I just had a quick look online & would appear NPTC & Lantra operate a chainsaw instructors course. Might be useful & lower insurance etc. Remember you have to cover your backside & then some in the UK.
  19. I think its a great idea, but I think you will need to research the legalities, insurance, whether you need to have tutorial training yourself to teach, also a disclaimer for them to sign which absolves you of any liability should they wish to weild a chainsaw after the course etc. The homeowner & the chainsaw are a dangerous combo, I even felled an apple for nowt for a neighbour I was working for once because he was so scarily dangerous waving this saw around, it was only a matter of time before he ended up in A&E. Good luck with the new venture.
  20. I have used the same wolfe garten pole & pruning head around 8 years, they have been run over by a 20 ton lorry at 40 mph (long story) & still work pretty well. Very good investment, they have earn't their money hundreds of times over.

Did you guys have to fit a particulate filter to your tree spade?

    LEZ london

If you are running a commercial vehicle including 4x4 light utility vehicles, motorised horseboxes, pick ups & other specialist vehicles weighing between 1.205 tonnes unladen, 3.5 tonnes GVW, motor caravans & ambulances weighing 2.5-3.5 tonnes or mini buses with more than 8 passenger seats meet the current standards for particulate matter if registered as new on or after 1st January 2002. There are some vehicles registered before this date that meet the current Euro 3 standard & are known as early adopters. Other heavy commercials more than 3.5 tonnes need to be registered as new before 1 october 2006 to enter the LEZ. If you find a vehicle you can enter the reg number on the TFL website & will tell you if its compliant. Hope this helps Openspaceman.

A friend of mine owns a business about 100 yards outside the LEZ & runs a 2001 plate ranger which has the same engine as a 2002/2003 yet he cannot enter. Be warned though, TFL will be changing the rules again in the near future so that only euro 4 engined commercials will be allowed to enter unless fitted with a VOSA approved particulate filter which you then have to get emission tested each year by VOSA at a cost of around £35 as well as MOT emissions test.
