  1. That's good isn't it? I thought you ran on slicks and if that isn't slick, I don't know what is.
  2. My favourite furniture timber. Not just for the look but also for the finish. You can get such a fine level of finish with yew. And with a good wax, like a piece of clean glass.
  3. And how is it? Appreciatively better or wouldn't you bother again? I know two guys who alway run their 346s on 18" and mainly in hardwood. Silly good or just silly? If I was cutting mainly small softwood. I'd run a 13" but then I'm not tall. As it is, I run the above combo, which saves a bit of swapping from one side of a stem to the other. If I went to 13" on regular basis, it would have to be a solid bar or the balance would be out of whack.
  4. Partly depends on the saw I would've thought. But 15"-16" for sure and maybe 18"... saw dependant.
  5. I was set on getting Haix Airpower Gold - until I read a whole load of reviews telling of soles patting from uppers within a year. And lacing points tearing from uppers, faster than you can say, "What nice shiny boots." Ended up going for some boots not on your list, (Meindl Waldaufer). And am more than happy with my choice. Light, rugged, waterproof and comfy.
  6. Working for short time with someone, who freely admitted it was probably the old mix, when his saw became sluggish & erratic and finally ceased running under load. He was unsure how old the mix was but knew he should've mixed fresh before walking-in the 1.2km, for 5mins. of cutting. Me on the other hand, running my normal premix by Aspen, cut the day through without a hiccup and didn't miss a beat. No worry about how old the mix was and am happy with the knowledge, that I won't be wasting 3+Ltrs. of stale pump-premix.
  7. Drifting fog with temps. between -2°C to +3°C for past few days.
  8. 550XPG felling MS660 or recent 661 larger fell & small milling MS880 milling If the question had been which four. Then I'd have added an MS241 C-M.
  9. Where's the oil hole or does that one not normally have holes.
  10. More like they just get on with life. Flu or no flu, they leave the heavy hearted complaining to the weaker gender.

    Old stubby

Ok, so it's nearly over. But hope it was a good one and that your year adhead is a good one.
  12. Nice one or three as it may be. Just making up my mind. Do I go help clear laurel from the frozen mud or rhodie. Either way I'll be getting there by car & narrowboat.
  13. Replaced one brake band within warranty. But I paid for it and fitted it myself. As I see it, it's not a part with a known lifespan. If you hardly ever use the brake, it's unlikely to wear/brake anytime soon. But if you use it every time you more a foot, then it's going to have a pretty short lifespan. But then they're not expensive and are easy to fit. My advice for what it's worth - buy two now, fit one and carry the other like you would a spare chain.
  14. A tad on the chilly side but with all the blubber I've put on over Yule. Well, gloves 'n' hat and I'm warm.
  15. That's made me smile. And as has been said, one cute dragon.
  16. A friend suggested a deeper and or thinner bowl be turned in two or more sessions. Being filled with shavings & sawdust in a cool dry place between; and directly after final turning. I asked for how long and he said only experience could tell for sure.
  17. Or you could take the tree and leave the ivy. Gee-wizz I hate ivy with a passion. Had to demolish and rebuild two walls due to the devil's tendrils.
  18. I presume you've checked to make sure there isn't a giant at the top.
  19. Ah yes. My mistake; Stubby has it correct there.
  20. If you're cutting on a steep slope. A Danish Pie Cut will give you a squared off butt, more product and the tree will fall past 90° before breaking the hinge. Also, far less likely to have the butt slip back toward cutter, if you accidentally removed the hinge. As the tree moves downhill and away from cutter.
  21. Something from the Sadolin range, http://www.sadolin.co.uk/products-overview/ .
  22. Not thinking of a Danish Pie Cut by any chance? And he beat me to it.
  23. Well it can't make u its mind. 5mins. of hail, then fine, then 5mins. of rain, then snow, then hail, rain... wind coming and going, first this way, then veering 90°.
  24. That doesn't sound at all good Jon. Hope the situation improves for you. Now really blowing and persistently precipitating.
  25. Rain most of the day and snow almost gone now.
