  3. any thoughts on this?: I am seeing the customers at the weekend. or where can I look. forestry.gov website???
  4. Alder is one of the best timbers for water work. so any ditches or revetments that need rebuilding and or will be in a constant damp environment, alder is the one!!
  5. have a client who has a largish (18") SC showing signs of dying back. but this is starting at the lowest part of the canopy, whilst the top is still healthy green at this stage. half mile down the road, I notice another customers coup of SC shows signs of this, but these are smaller trees coppiced around 7-9yrs. again crown showing Autumn colour tinges top to bottom. in two pockets. (from what I can see driving) our other customer a mile down the road also has the odd tree showing symptoms. these are again 10" or so and also smaller 1" thick coppice regrowth. I am on the wrong computer at the moment so no pictures. but what is it and should I be concerned ???
  6. cool, just need to decide which way to go. need to cut some more trees down first to afford them!
  7. Rob Had trouble login in last night, wanted to order some sharpening stone. What tips 4 using a long bar to minimse bat sag?
  8. thanks for your double input
  9. wel, time is coming soon to start on this big 4.5ft Burr oak. trouble is, I will need a bigger bar than my titchy 47" duromatic. as I see it, I have two options. Stihl 59" or Cannon 60" super bar or? other than a cost difference and me getting 20% off at my local dealer on the stihl, would I see any gains on getting the cannon? my concern is flexure when set up on the mill. I don't want saggy boards thoughts, hints n tips welcome. simon
  10. wow!!! I wish mine looked like that! when I tried the other day, on a similar size log it was a right bastard to do. and quite frankly I was highly disappointed given the effort I had put in. no matter what I did, i got a cork screwed beam. not impressed. it should of been a 8x8 or so, but now it will just firewood. will take a picture and show 2mrw.
  11. well there you go then. learn something new everyday
  12. why cant you buy two stroke online? thought it was saws / power tools only??? not that I've read " stihls policy"
  13. Boom Town Fair, Winchester first go editing with some music, please go easy on me!!! Rhobs log:
  14. welcome Ivan seems like your underway quite nicely with your new tool, and most importantly having some fun, if this is not a capital venture. Running your new 880 would have ample power thru that small 18" softwood, but soon as the numbers in inches rise, things slow quickly. technique, chain sharpness etc. will soon show poor technique. what logs do you wish to mill at that size would be my first question? don't foret on a granberg mill we (I) (U) loose about 6-7" for the frame. so a log of 53" or 66" is getting serious!! most modern saws are built for speed with a little grunt, but not a great deal of old school torque. I ve just recently milled a biggish beech, 32" slabs where Rhob had issues with melting drive bearings on his 088. I went and played with its bigger and older cousin, renowned for its exceptional cutting ability, stihl 090. these boards where only 32" wide x 12ft and its was taking me 11mins per cut and a full tank of fuel and oil on a 137cc machine. so again larger than you 880. Rod D has more experience with that machine than I for milling so hopefully he will drop by, but either way you will be having a slow day in big timber good luck simon
  15. looks even better!!!
  16. well, obviously your idea of looking after kit is different to mine. if this mower was well looked after and never serviced in four years, how does that equate to being well looked after? just sayin
  17. to add to James`s list. Big Beech is also hard
  18. pictures or video, or it didn't happen
  19. true enough! ive upgraded my 36" to a 56" as the saw and trees keep on getting bigger! just need a 60" bar next on my list, then I can get a grip with my 4.5ft D Burr Oak
  20. 2.9 - 3.1mm (0.11-0.12") BTDC
  21. its that wine still
  22. yes you are quite right Eddy, hence why is best not to think about tuning saws when in bed, on your mobile and after a few glasses of wine. gets you all confused. this link may also be of help for you too: http://www.arboristsite.com/chainsaw/81574.htm simon
  23. Iam no ways an expert, but if still rich, perhaps a secondary air leak like tge crank seals? If the screws have no effect on mixture that might be the caze?
  24. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmYQpjfquts]Ockham Oak - YouTube[/ame] Was the link. Sorry!!!
