  3. Have since spoken with my stocker and whilst a bit if burr us ok, best not for it to be all burr. This piece has since sold. So just awaitin to see what comes up next. 4. Sell butts whole. Loads if local mills if u look around.
  5. Thx. Thinkin the wax may be a good option. Almost infinate colour pallette with those stix. Havnt decided wat timber yet mind. The blank shown is a tad tight on thickness.
  6. Hi Chaps, i am looking at importing a new gunstock blank, and at this stage i am thinking a bit of wood with some burr in may look a tad tasty. but how would you go about filling these small pits allowing for a oil finished stock? ive worked some oak before and have just sanded back to a finish and it appears great, but wondering if out shooting in the winter would this be a cause for concern? or would ample coats of oil finish protect these areas?
  7. thanks Jon, looking in to my options at the moment s
  8. i would not concrete in posts. will rot pretty quickly, even if is oak. ive also heard green oak rots faster as well!
  9. looking for possibly some heavily burred elm, or better still all burr with superb coloration if possible ideal planks would be up to around 30-35" x 2.5 x 8" deep. must be dry, ready to work with a MC of 12% or lower or able to be kilned to 10% anyone have anything, pictures would be gr8 and of course the sort of money you would be looking for. TIA simon
  10. nice Beech, but that Oak is rotten as a pear!! white rot in the center there. it will dry out and disintegrate in front of your very eyes. soft and nasty too!
  11. yes it does work. did some last year of some bigish oak burrs. search my posts and you will find a link and possibly some pictures, though cant remember if i posted any:001_smile:
  12. my choice is hawthorn. after all in days gone by they used it for high lift wedges
  13. looks gr8. i am no expert, but if its indoors and dry (workshop) than i would not let the elements take there toll and take up moisture only to take it back indoors again?
  14. easier solution, rather than waiting for your wood to dry, boil them.
  15. lovely wood, the knots are very distinctive. Looking at the milling, i am guessing the bar and mill may be a tad over engineered for that size tree ;-)
  16. I have seen many stunning bowls turned from the branch sections. Like big orange eyes in the wood. A turners dream i beleive...
  17. i knew he should of bought more 2" 4ft apple boards from me!!
  18. My 441 normally sports 25" But at moment shes on 16"...... I also run the 064 on 16" too
  19. I presume your yard is under tight defra control then if you have these beetles "currently in stock"
  20. Could help with milling in to planks if needed.
  21. Thats more of a mans 090 size tree, not for boys with there 088's
  22. Dont forget a 36 bar will giv around 28 final cut. Yes shud b ok. I use my old 064 with a 36bar. But best kept sharp
  23. Yep. On the 090 there great. A noticble difference, only problem i have found is that when wet there dangerous as the leather is so slippery
