  1. I think this is the biggest point. If you don’t have an in depth knowledge of trees, don’t try and start a tree company. And if you still really want to, focus on books rather than ropes. There’s enough clueless arbs as it is!
  2. Your post was saying we were going to be taken over by Muslims, it contained slurs. It’s bit further than a differing opinion. Can you genuinely not see the difference? It was intended as more descriptive than offensive. I apologise if I hurt your feelings. Sure, but we aren’t in a pub. And if I was in a pub and someone was chatting like that I wouldn’t expect it to slide.
  3. A less than sympathetic view is passable, but when you say that they’re going to take over, implying some sort of existential threat to Britain then yes, I believe that’s racist. I never said you were a right wing extremist, I still wouldn’t, but I would happily say you were an utter dipshit.
  4. I’m sure it has been rinsed. I don’t often come in here but dipped my toe in this morning and couldn’t let ‘pleasant’s comment slide. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but that sort of rhetoric is totally unacceptable. I’m really disappointed that the mods, who are active in this thread, let it slide tbh.
  5. I mean, Braverman WAS inherently very right wing. She was an ardent supporter of the ridiculous Rwanda plan (a fine way to waste, what £150m of public money) and it was increasingly clear she was pretty racist. Never heard anyone referring to ‘muzzies’ before either but it’s clearly a racial/religious slur. What an ironic user name ‘pleasant’ is for you. Don’t fret darling, the only people taking over your precious England are the mad right wingers who’ve spent the past decade or so getting you all scared of ‘that lot’.
  6. Yes
  7. I guess deer and sheep are a massive, and pretty indisputable factor in why we see little regeneration. Farming probably has a wider negative impact on ecosystems and habitat. From the land use, to pesticides, nutrient run off, river health etc. And so much of our forest/forestry is a joke anyway. I was working in a German forest in the summer and it was incredible. Textbook CCF, no planting necessary, amazing quality timber coming out, great big functioning ecosystem. It’s criminal that we’re still stuck in this Sitka farming bs here. The uk is basically really bad at land management…
  8. At the end of the day I think it comes down to fit. I had a pair of pfanners that lasted 6 years, and I absolutely hated every one of them. I’ve since been wearing husky tech extremes and breathflex pros, neither of which last as long but are so much nicer to wear I’m quite ok with that.
  9. I’d call it many things, but a decent job definitely wouldn’t be one of them. Granted it looks like it’s taken a battering in the past, and some further pruning was probably inevitable. I’d probably have suggested just reducing the height and width though, not thinning it back to a skeleton. It’s obviously not what this tree was planning on.
  10. When you pull the tail the hitch hits the pulley, collapses, and the system moves up. That’s what’s meant to happen.
  11. I’ve never actually used a recoil as they don’t have a breakaway built in. The teufelberger ones are slick as though 👌🏻
  12. I can’t listen to him, he speaks like Trump and it’s just unbearable. Good at felling, good at saws, not convinced he knows much about trees though.
  13. This. Awful idea. I can’t grasp people who find climbing with a chair rattling round their ankles to be ergonomic.
  14. A pal of mine used one of those. A branch he was cutting snapped earlier than he expected, fell, caught the strop and dragged the silky through his hand, severing tendons and nerves as well I believe. They’re really such a s**t idea.
  15. Vat registered one man band here, my book keeper was talking me out of it for ages, until I went over and had to. As others have said the clients who want you in won’t mind too much. Vat returns are a piece of piss in accounting software, I think it’s three mouse clicks to create and submit my return. The initial vat payment is a beaut as well. I think I got 17k, it’s only once obviously, but getting handed a wad of cash is a lovely wee treat. Basically everything, from saws to fuel, costs less now. It’s great.
  16. If by this you mean continuing this ridiculous back and forth with you, then no.
  17. Apologies, I just got a bit carried away in the pro AR camp. It’s this weather gov, honest…
  18. I mean I hate to be pedantic but that was what I suggested in my first post here… I was in an employed role when we first did that, about 13 years ago. We had about 4/5 local companies + contractors who would get involved for it. It was a great opportunity to share techniques, especially for the guys working in companies where there wasn’t such a high standard of climbing. We kept a record of everyone who was there and what they’d done, then we’d have a fire, food and a few beers and generally have a nice day of it. Ticked all the boxes for the hse, very low cost, and a good fun day.
  19. I have and honestly they aren’t particularly cohesive. I just poked my head in here as it seemed a number of people were extremely critical of the value of AR. I gave a few examples of AR’s that actually happened and you yammered on about self rescue. The point you seem to be missing is that if a casualty can’t self rescue then someone will have to go up and get them. Training for that situation is clearly going to improve the odds. I don’t see how you can debate that? Particularly as an nptc assessor. And all this flapping your meat about wanting to see rescue practice data… what utter nonsense.
  20. What is it, specifically, that you don’t agree with?
  21. You were calling bullshit on me saying i know people who’ve carried out aerial rescues. I’m simply asking why you find that so unbelievable. I completely agree that wherever possible self rescue should be the first choice. But some times it isn’t an option, hence the discussion on aerial rescues.
  22. What part of someone carrying out an aerial rescue is so unbelievable to you?
  23. Why would timings for an aerial rescue practice carry more weight than instances where people were actually saved by a swift rescue? One wasn’t wearing cutting trousers, one was. We all know that a big saw going full pelt will get through cutting trousers though.
  24. If you can get someone on the deck in 6 minutes though then you could absolutely administer life saving first aid in the tree.
  25. Taking a punt here, but I suspect that given they were unable to descend they probably weren’t in much of a state to apply a dressing. Probably something to do with sinking a saw into their thigh 🤔 Very experienced colleagues who are so bad at rescues you guys have written off the idea of one 🙄 In all seriousness this isn’t a matter that’s up for debate. Practicing rescues makes you more effective should the need ever arise. It isn’t even just all about arterial bleeds either, I was at an event last year where someone passed out up a tree. I suppose you’d have been able to implement a self rescue despite your lack of consciousness? As for data, I’ve given you multiple examples of occasions where an aerial rescue was vital to someone’s survival. If you need more than that then…? 😬🤷🏻
