  1. the RHI payment scheme is a minefield looked at having a biomass boiler to run alongside lpg boiler. so in winter biomass would run heating and hot water summer lpg runs the hot water and maybe heat if its get chilly. but cost re a return can not justify it same with solar. wind. its the upfront costs £10 k upwards. and with feed in tarif now dropped take a long time to get your money back.
  2. what do you get charged for sawn stakes. i wonder if those who do hedgelaying undersell themselves. what is a skilled craft. taking years to master. as before hurdles £90 for a 6ft thatchers 25k to thatch a house. farrier £40 to shoe A horse. and yet £6 upwards a mtr to lay a hedge. 20x £6= £120 a day less materials fuel for saw truck and getting materials. its not a lot. its not as if once you have tools thats it allways need fuel and materials. there was a thread on the NHLS forum re having accreditation for hedgelaying going up to crafstman. maybe thats the way forward, to show that its not a job any one can just do but needs training and practice. to get to a skill. then those who lay can try and get a decent rate for there skills. also its only a winter job so 7 months could be busy other 5 months what do you do. i do ground maintenance work in summer and lengthman all year. i be interested in others views on this.
  3. depends what style you lay if its south or midlands then there is stakes and binders to take out of mtr poss same with other style. £6.50 a mtr sounds on the very low side its difficult there was a post and it varies but £10 was norm going up depending how bad hedge is take out your materials from your price not a lot left for a days work not that much on a tenner but its what you think the customer will accept. and how much you can crack out in a day. 20mtrs is about the norm for a day unless a new hedge may get up to 30 plus a day. you are looking at £2.50 a mtr for materials. so at £6.50 a mtr less materials £4 per mtr 20mtrs a day £80 not a lot for what is hard work and a craft take hurdles £90 each doing a hedge not much different.
  4. have always been told to lay uphill as it makes the sap rise so making the hedge bud out lay downhill the sap runs out. but as other posts sometimes you do have to lay wrong way to fill a gap. unless long stuff then back pleach half way along. it then rises and goes back. as for when its colder. as most hedglaying is in winter and no sap in stem then can be a bit brittle if on the large size. if the pleach is right it should still lay without cracking. if it cracks not cut through enough. as for left handed i am left handed only time i do have a bit of a job if hedge is running right to left then its on the wrong side for me if i can go other side and lay it if not just have to struggle.
  5. well laid the first hedge of the season big old beech hedge well it was trees 4plus inch across. only 10 mtrs but laid it and done in a day customer happy. will post some photos soon as they send them over from the iphone. start 100mtrs native hedge next week. but its warm not use to being this warm laying hedges.
  6. daughter was saying she saw on news that 5000sq mtrs of standing larch is going to be felled due to being infected. by a airbourne organism said that if this was the case it would have been on this site .as thata is as bad as ash die back. the report was saying that imported timber as going to be banned. little to late again if this is the case. and the bark is going to be sent for biomass to burn it to kill the bacteria.
  7. i had to use normal 2 stroke as could not get to dealer to get aspen. never knew what a difference it makes. the blower chucked fumes back at me the hedge trimmer was getting a lung full same with chain saw. now i see the difference will stick with aspen. so much cleaner to use
  8. find a few grass snakes and slow worms when strimming. pick them up and put out of harms way. along with toads.
  9. ratty, badger and all at wind in the willows will be grateful you saved toad. can see a new book coming on he does get into scrapes mr toad.
  10. the big stems at bottom cut them out and use later for walking sticks as other post blade on strimmer and go down from top not into side of them will chop them all up into bits. do that lot in a couple of hours.
  11. my old yews do this start to turn brown when it gets a bit dry then seem to pirk up. and its on the edges it happens. as other post give it some mulch and fertiliser to help it out
  12. you got a very good bargain new in the 1k mark to buy, and with wet stuff they block up all the water from sucking makes bag heavy so need to be strong man to lift them. trouble is our climate when leaves fall is its wet so leaves are wet and going into fan they block the in feed hose. same with the hand helds. i gave up just blow now into a heap and collect in a builders bag. the only ones that work are the big commercial beasts with a 14inch plus suction hose they suck but still got to suck a bit at a time or they block up.
  13. more like rocket speed blink and yo miss it but looked good what i saw.
  14. make sure there there when you do do the work and he has said how deep pipe is then dig carefully and slow. with a banksman looking were you dig. keeping a eye out for pipe but should be if big as other post 30inches down. but its that gas engineer who is the one who knows. you hope so you know how far you can go down
  15. billygoats never had a good impression of them get blocked if leaves wet. get yourself a good knapsack blower. blow them into rows and collect and take away unless you have mower with collector then better as chops them up and you dump them on a compost heap to rot down. sorry to hear of your loss of kit at present i know how it feels to loose gear to the gutter snipes of this land
  16. have a large pipe on my ground and they do not like me doing anything near it as such we used 360 without teeth. and with one of there guys on site whislt doing it. get hold of them and ask for there field engineer to come out and work out best way to clear it. but 360 should pull them out but with extreme care if that went up you would not know what happened or find whats left of you. take care.
