  1. have to say do like the scags good mowers ferris have to see one working in proper conditions and not cutting long grass as it makes a crap job with long grass makes hay. need to have a proper look at what is on offer. like a bigger toro as my 425 does a cracking job. and so manovarable which on larger areas would not be so much of a issue. have to see if i can get some on demo to try
  2. under investigation for something similar what is he doing on the road. well lets trust he looses his hgv and hope your friend makes a full recovery and gets his other dog back.
  3. no they are hear to stay like the grey and the native wildlife will have to try and keep out of its way the mink. there are signs that the water vole is making a comeback like the otter. so maybe they have evolved to stay away from the mink to survive. still like to trap crayfish but need a permit.
  4. trouble with mink is they are from colder countries they get there food eat some store some for the winter which would be frozen so would keep to keep them going but in the uk its normally warm so what they take and store goes off so they take more. they are not good for our native wildlife. so need to be eradicated to save what is natural in the uk. american signal crayfish has nearly wiped out the british crayfish EA need to get the act together and let them be hunted nice to eat. grey squirrel tree rat does so much damage once again a usa import. not the fault of the animal but in the wrong place.
  5. i priced for two grasscutting contracts. one i cut the grass because the firm who was doing it was changing hands. i lost the job they priced cutting a playing field for £30 how can you do a job with machine for this but the work is bad no strimming in cut out 10 minutes other job £50 cheaper went for other company as a well known firm even though i had been doing work for them for 5 years and they know my work is good. i have given up trying to sqeese my margins for some jobs its now a price if i get it fine if not can only hope more will come my way.
  6. with the side shoot and cutting regular do you have any clipping about. as one job it has to be fine with no clippings as such. at present done with a triple gang. but would be a waste to have a set as only this job at present to use on. all others a rotary will be fine.
  7. as sthil do there mower type blade that is what i would use. had a go on a big sthil with one and made a cracking job better than a tri blade. cuts much faster. but as for mulching unless you go in and do the bouncing down method on top instead of sideways motion. it will smash it down so you can then just go in sideways on the bottom to cut it off to ground level and it will be in bits to rot away.
  8. bowlander can you let us know was the wood you paid for advertised as 0.7cub mtr of logs. also how do you know that all you got was 0.4 cub mtr of logs. be interested how you mesure if you have had half a cube or a full cube. i can see your veiws that you paid for what you say should have been 0,7 mtr cube but you believe you only had 0.4 mtr cube. as for bags if you buy them in the bags then buy them as i sell them one builders bag of split logs hardwood. no its x cube of logs and mine are loose loaded to stack them neat in a bag be double the price i charge for a bag lot of work
  9. looking at getting a larger ride on for doing larger areas. as above 5ft to 6ft. to make cutting quicker. like a mulcher. if not sutible side discharge with poss collector unit. for collecting grass if required not to keen on rear discharge after seeing a few at work and not a good finish more like a hay field. and if i can a zero turn mower. any suggestions please and looking second hand as can not yet afford new.
  10. so sorry to hear this i hope your friend is ok and his dogs are found soon and reunited with him. i trust the hgv gets the book thrown at him. was he a johnny foreign by any chance heading back to catch ferry.
  11. never give measurements for logs just say its a builders bag of logs or its a pick up load or my double axle trailer load. then they know thats what they get. and as yet my customers are all happy as they keep ringing up for more logs get into dodgy ground saying its x when its y same with charcoal sell it by the bag no weight just a bag of charcoal. trouble is trading standards start getting involved if you sell x and customers gets y and complains. you then need to explain how you got to x.
  12. i am insured with rural insurance. do similar work. and covered for clearance of small trees. coppicing etc went through concorde insurance chandlers ford got me what i wanted at a good price, speak to neil
  13. have a honda 21inch self propelled mower for sale with roller in good nick if interested pm me
  14. bit of a treck. but think the wood we did use is only worth max £50 per acre needs so much to get anything out of it, waiting back on what they want to do.
  15. good news fully booked for this season. and fingers crossed next season as well. unlike last year not much doing. poss that the grant scheme is back again. which is good news for hedglayers. good to see a new group. are you affiliated to the NHLS,
  16. native hedging mix hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, maple, wayfaring purging buckthorn, spindleberry dog rose for color. so many to choose. i plant 5 to mtr staggard spacing using hawthorn as the main plant, then mixing with the others.
  17. yes we do not twist our binders like midland first one is put on second one opposite third same as first then fourth goes in under first two at second stake and on we go d like midland binding looks nice. like to learn it again.
  18. nice job looks midland to me.
  19. good news we have a sub forum. maybe we can through this show what a good hedge laid is and maybe get more hedges to lay. await new posts from cutters and non cutters.
  20. thank you Steve brill:thumbup: we can gossip all night on the merits of hedgelaying. much apreciated. all you cutters suport the sub forum with your posts
  21. beekeeper chap hate wasps and hornets. if he gets a number of wasps attack a hive it can do a lot of damage. hornets he said are worse send out sentinels looking for whatever if they come across a beehive will go back and come in numbers poor bees no match for them can destroy a hive.
  22. no i do not most of my work is in hampshire exept if he comes back a job in durham. and the style we lay is predominate in this part of the land. and find that most customers look for a local cutter. as they can get the materials for hedges local so not a treck to bring them. never say will not go elsewhere but as yet not been asked over that part of the country
  23. can not say south of england we lay ours low and build up as we go along as needs to be stock proof as most styles need to be. in comps for our style will get docked points if we have any gaps as such which a lamb can get through
  24. pics of hedge i laid south of england 30ft hazel with barb and stock fencing grown in.and was cold when laying 700mtrs on top of a hill with snow flurries never been so cold laying a hedge
  25. its dorset style and it is laid majority of the time on a bank dorset will say but maybe a drop other side were road is. the style i lay south of england we lay 4ft most of time as on flat ground. and tie in with stakes every 18inches then bind the top to keep it firm see your from somerset down your way lay flatish on bank cross bettween dorset and devon style. the more east you come and it get flatter then south of england takes over. to kent and up to just south of oxford then midland upwards with different styles either side. there are 16 main styles with aprox 30 sub styles based on the main ones. trust this helps and ccs service is i believe is derby style different again. bit of a treck but nationals is worth going to to see all the main styles being laid in bucks
