  1. if you look on weather school then its different normal temps rain and some strong winds not untill december there may be some white stuff. Simon forecasts are 99% spot on work my jobs around his forecasts for week. like next week hedgeing mon.tues wednesday onwards as its not to good will go strimming and pressure washing as is a wet job so rain as well make no difference as can do these jobs in the wet. be good if he would come on this site and put on his forecast for week.
  2. if you want a accurate weather forecast weather school 99% bang on today in south rain to start dry by 9am it was and was sunny all day and warm. as for long range Simon has not mentioned any snow as such if anything heavy rain. so take it with a pinch of salt. i will keep looking at weather school for my forecast
  3. look for a good second hand sthil or husky with a 50cc engine then you can if wanted put a clearing blade on it with a mlcher blade will kill the brambles. leave some though for wildlife. lot of woodland butterflies and moths like brambles and good cover for ground nesting birds
  4. doing a hedge for a customer had a a apprentice helping me never spoke and all he would do was trim the wiskers on hedge:biggrin:
  5. they are all heavy no matter what model. its a killer on your upper arms and shoulders
  6. did send you a pm when you first posted still interested
  7. may be of help to you but the north east hedgelayers where in need of stakes and binders as a shortage of hazel up there part of the world.
  8. i went ex directory to stop nuisance calls and for personal reasons. did it stop the slaes people ringing when i asked how did you get my number they just hang up. as for the microsoft DO NOT let them anywhere near your pc they will put a add on which allows them to monitor your pc and get your personal details eg bank account details once they have them your bank balance will follow was on the beeb inside out south some poor lady had it done.
  9. cheesfoot head and the bowl which general eisenhower spoke to the troops before embarking on the d day landings. also what is now the M3 which was the winchester bypass this is where the trucks and tanks where kept prior to be loaded Winchester cathedral the largest cathedral without a spire. and my great grandfather who helped william walker shore up the foundations. King alfred statue which was cast by thornecroft who built the steam engines.
  10. the trouble is its not just dropping the liner down chimney and fitting it has to have a vermiculite cement mix put down outside of liner to keep heat in. and it has to to have for insurance a HERAS certificate which they have to give when they fit it if anything goes wrong then its them who foot the bill. shame your a bit far as have a chap who may have been able to do it all to spec. PM me pat i will give you his number and you can ask him.
  11. the chances of him getting nicked for this are slim. if they can not match his face with there mug shots then its a loss. to much hard work to sort it out. yet they can lay in wait on a dark night hidden in the bushes and knick my wife for breaking the speed limit. yes over but said to copper i thought it was 40 it was until she got to crossroads changed to 30. and reading on hear all the time what little is done to stop the thieving and there response on stuff nicked. sent a letter to my MP complaining about lack of effort at grass roots level and what is being spent on a uk FBI
  12. if its normal stakes eg 2inch hazel 50p is going rate depends how many you are after seen them for more 60p up but 50p is normal see if you can find a local coppicing group bound to find a hurdle maker or like who will sell them. yo look a bit far for my chap.
  13. i had just finished cutting hedge came back to van put it down hedge side of truck went to back of truck picked up blower started blower was only 5 yrds max he sneaked in grabbed it and ran off over playing field, so yes my fault should have locked it up before doing anything else learnt the hard way. still sucks
  14. well i posted that my brand new long handle was nicked from under my nose well pub had cctv what i saw of it a very good image. had a phone call from police yesterday we have looked at cctv but image is not that good and maybe 10 suspects like the one on the cctv. mind boggles they are now saying a week later will go and ask the golf club to look at there cctv. but the best bit was had lots of stuff nicked it maybe organised crime involved so looking wider to see if we can match it up. i despair even with photos they still can not point the finger or go and knock on there door. now my hedgetrimmer has been sold on and being used by those who do not mind using bent gear. i know other posts say about the police. starting to think the same. somehow something needs to be brought out to be able to track even small hand tools not just plant, i hate to think how many people are out of pocket in the hundreds due to excess not allowing to make a claim on insurance:cursing:
  15. interesting did not know fb had a business section will go and look. have been on a site called linkedin have a number of people who look if it could be worthwhile but as yet nothing has come from it. so may try fb see how i get on.
  16. i put normal 2 stroke in my hedgecutter and blower as way out and needed fuel to finish job. yuk never again did not realize how much they stink on normal pump fuel compared to aspen 2. will keep some aspen now so i do not run out.
  17. grasscutting season coming to a end. maybe two more cuts which is good. hedges to do. then hedgelaying booked until next april. and fingers crossed maybe more for next season. so looking up. as been hard this year so far.
  18. i put below a reply to start of season but though it needed a new thread. those i watch laying hedges are what i call skilled craftsman at work. the longer you have been laying hedges the more skill you have. yet when asked what is the going rate for laying hedges and what i have heard. are we undercharging for our skills. some of the related skills to our own i have listed below. what do you get charged for sawn stakes. i wonder if those who do hedgelaying undersell themselves. what is a skilled craft. taking years to master. as before hurdles £90 for a 6ft thatchers 25k to thatch a house. farrier £40 to shoe A horse. and yet £6 upwards a mtr to lay a hedge. 20x £6= £120 a day less materials fuel for saw truck and getting materials. its not a lot. its not as if once you have tools thats it allways need fuel and materials. there was a thread on the NHLS forum re having accreditation for hedgelaying going up to crafstman. maybe thats the way forward, to show that its not a job any one can just do but needs training and practice. to get to a skill. then those who lay can try and get a decent rate for there skills. also its only a winter job so 7 months could be busy other 5 months what do you do. i do ground maintenance work in summer and lengthman all year. i be interested in others views on this.
  19. had it at tesco had some aspen 2 cans which hold normal fuel ok. came out can not fill that not a petrol can. what's that on side flammable liquid. he shut up and went back inside i filled them up.
  20. my late father who was a master builder and knew things building got a firm in to do him a shower room by the time i found out nearly finished. talk about a bodge job. since have found they used flexi hose as the wastewater for the shower so it leaked bringing ceiling down. he paid them jokers 4k for there efforts. so its nots just the caravan nomadic travelers who rip the older generation off.
  21. the RHI payment scheme is a minefield looked at having a biomass boiler to run alongside lpg boiler. so in winter biomass would run heating and hot water summer lpg runs the hot water and maybe heat if its get chilly. but cost re a return can not justify it same with solar. wind. its the upfront costs £10 k upwards. and with feed in tarif now dropped take a long time to get your money back.
  22. what do you get charged for sawn stakes. i wonder if those who do hedgelaying undersell themselves. what is a skilled craft. taking years to master. as before hurdles £90 for a 6ft thatchers 25k to thatch a house. farrier £40 to shoe A horse. and yet £6 upwards a mtr to lay a hedge.
  23. depends what style you lay if its south or midlands then there is stakes and binders to take out of mtr poss same with other style. £6.50 a mtr sounds on the very low side its difficult there was a post and it varies but £10 was norm going up depending how bad hedge is take out your materials from your price not a lot left for a days work not that much on a tenner but its what you think the customer will accept. and how much you can crack out in a day. 20mtrs is about the norm for a day unless a new hedge may get up to 30 plus a day. you are looking at £2.50 a mtr for materials. so at £6.50 a mtr less materials £4 per mtr 20mtrs a day £80 not a lot for what is hard work and a craft take hurdles £90 each doing a hedge not much different.
  24. have always been told to lay uphill as it makes the sap rise so making the hedge bud out lay downhill the sap runs out. but as other posts sometimes you do have to lay wrong way to fill a gap. unless long stuff then back pleach half way along. it then rises and goes back. as for when its colder. as most hedglaying is in winter and no sap in stem then can be a bit brittle if on the large size. if the pleach is right it should still lay without cracking. if it cracks not cut through enough. as for left handed i am left handed only time i do have a bit of a job if hedge is running right to left then its on the wrong side for me if i can go other side and lay it if not just have to struggle.
  25. well laid the first hedge of the season big old beech hedge well it was trees 4plus inch across. only 10 mtrs but laid it and done in a day customer happy. will post some photos soon as they send them over from the iphone. start 100mtrs native hedge next week. but its warm not use to being this warm laying hedges.
