  1. get yourself a bench grinder for doing chains so much quicker. mine cost me £40 but the oregon is one of the goods ones. so is £100 plus or get one of the 12vlt ones they do a good job of sharpening chains
  2. good pair of welding gaunlets 99% do not get in and those that do just prick so hardly ever have to get thorns out of hands. so invest in a good pair of welding gauntlets £3 from tool station. had mine ages now nice and soft so can work in them but still tought i been grabbing thorn most of this week with no problems odd one gets past if you go on to point of thorn but glove stops it going in hand and breaking off
  3. normal is a 1 in 6 fall so with a level if you just dig and so far along check what the bottom of ditch was when you started if its lower than the hight at start it should run. or put in drainage pipe covered in teram water goes in pipe and runs to end into channel or stream. no ditches around so whole field can be used
  4. if they want them down below 2mtrs lay them as a hedge if that is how they should have been before getting out of hand can not do it with cypress etc but any others will lay fine. laid a 30ft beech tree hedge down to 4ft. looked at one today 30ft hazel with ash and others mixed in have quoted to lay that
  5. my electric is 17p for first 500 units then drops to 10,5p per unit the first it pays the standing charge lpg 49p per ltr. have to say this year unlike last has been good my tank is still on 50% and has not been filled for 5 months now. have only had boiler on very occasional if it was a bit cold indoors. when it starts getting cold will fire up log burner to keep it warm indoors. last winter was a nightmare ran out of gas took 21 days to refill so had to resort to electricity to keep place warm so my bill was dreadful still paying it off. never again will i run out of lpg
  6. son in law has the oregon ones but the older model loves them and have to say like a pair of trousers to wear unlike a lot which are baggy. will not go far wrong with them or steins bought a pair for daughter from forest and arb £100 plus vat. look a very good hard wearing trouser does what she wants it to do i have phanners gladiators and paid good money for them. if i went for a new pair i would get the oregons.
  7. it makes me mad anything they can get there hands on they steal but to take what was a one off is nothing sacred that can be left. i do hope they get caught. but do not hold out much hope on that its a axe is what the police see it as. not a one off precision instrument which is worth more than money can buy. like a very good painting by a great artist only one done same with this.i am gutted to read this and boiling at the same time who did this. wants there hands chopped off
  8. type 4/5 they last a bit longer and nitral gloves also makesure you have your visor and whellies. and when mixing or doing anything with sprayer wear the lot. he or she will ask you what nozzels do and you have to do 100mtrs timed same back then fill a bucket timing it on the agregate of the two timesthat will give you your fill then will give you a course to spray as long as its within 5% you should be ok as long as they can see you know what you are doing should be fine you will learn it all on course before exam. if you can do the pa1 then can do the pa6
  9. out of interest who sells the CEUK ones be interested is cheaper than the silky have tried others but no match to the silky for sharpness
  10. with the big stuff yes wait untill a lot is down then stake as you say gets in way of other big stuff coming down.
  11. our scrap yard have to show driving licence and utiliiy bill with same address on. there after have to have driving licence and the reg plate has to be registered as well to your address. paid by bacs into a account no cheques issued. thats why stuff being nicked has gone through roof as the easy money selling nicked scrap has gone. thats the government for you come up with these ideas but forget about the spring board effect it has. its now so hard work with scrap do very little now. used to get a lot clearing stuff for people. but with waste carriers licence have to have a permit with council its all money to the pen pushers and for what it costs make very little now for normal light scrap. any good scrap is already been taken by the scrap dealers themselfs.
  12. then doing both south of england and midland thats because have learned with midland and south of england cutters.
  13. got a small fod up silky just cutting back of pleaches and that just broke no idear how now have a zumbat cracking saw so quick. out of interest when they do go dull can you get them sharpened or is it a new blade
  14. if any of them can not help herriad sawmills on the alton to basingstoke road may be able to help out
  15. talking to the lady who owns them they use them to guard sheep in the andes from wolves, foxes etc so think if i had one of my dogs with me may take a dislike to him she did say when they had sheep no fox went on the land
  16. get hold of your local police with crime number say your chipper is on ebay. its there duty to contact the local force and if serial numbers match seize it and let you have it back. plus if he nicked it he can have some porridge for a while
  17. here goes 3 hedgelaying pics
  18. does it have to be trees or related to arb talk eg hedgelaying, landscaping etc.
  19. black thorn is worse now whilst the sap is still in the hedge will be going down now so not so bad then spring time is worse for blackthorn its a coating on the thorn which causes infection. and if you get one in a joint then a get it out if it snaps off and if it turns red a yuk get to A&E quick it can damage the tendon sheaths in joints making that part eg a finger useless. was told by a rheumatologist who also did gp work and saw i had been had by a blackthorn. had seen a few people whose finger joints had seized and it was down to blackthorn and not cleaning the wound in time. as for gloves not heard that one. but that its the blackthorn which is the culprit. hawthorn yes swells a bit but not like blackthorn. gloves Digga had a good pair for doing this type of work i use welding gauntlets £3 a pair stop 99 % going in and i grab the stuff. to untangle it.
  20. maybe its me how i like to do it lay a few stems down then put in stakes and weave the stems around stakes. just looks nice then when finished hedge just check for straightness. move any that may be out bang them in so firm and then bind top of hedge with binders, can see laying the lot and then staking. but have a help mate so when i get so far she puts the stakes in for me.
  21. i was laying a good half dozen stems then putting stakes in just to keep it in place. will put photos on before and after. but looking good can see the oak now and the elm chinese one llamas liked that went mad for it. and tom one of the males for some reason been there for a few days but took a dislike today was spitting at me not nice chewed grass did miss but hit my daughter a gooding in face.that was it for a few mins on floor busting my side. as she was feeding them carrots.
  22. at £130 per load would loose all my customers. they like the wood we supply its dry but not kiln dry. and not paying a premium for wood that may be imported. keep to uk wood and charge a fair price for our logs may not be making a lot. but have a few who buy all year so makes up only having log orders in winter. all i need is some wood getting low never been this low this time of year.
  23. as i said in my post different with devon and dorset style as laying on deck. but laying southof england and midland plus others with hedge up off ground. i find staking every few yards a keeps it in place and can weaVE THE WISKERS IN lay the whole lot if on a long stretch bit of a job afterwards getting the stems in. in the right place. laying blackthorn and hawthorn at mo and even fro a newish hedge its all tangled in and does it bite got one in face and swelled up twice the size had to have antibiotics to reduce swelling. never wear a chain saw helmet again laying hedges went up under visor and jammed on face. flat cap now all the time
  24. reading this again sounds like you are in the middle of a neighbor's dispute one is ok to have a bit more off other is not. so in the end you have done your bit so should pay up. if not then go to small claims and issue one. if it does go before the judge he will side with you as you have offered its been refused. so they will have to pay for work done plus costs
  25. intereated in these alarm cABLE LOCKS were can you buy them. after having hedge trimmer knicked and the police saying even with cctv can not match the person. i am starting to think do they realy want to be bothered. and rather make a easy catch sitting out of way ready to knick someone doing over speed limit. thhe countrywatch team are more proactive. but still up against it with manpower. there is never a copper when you need one.
