  1. buy a honda blower 4 stroke no mixing and has power and cheaper than a sthil. if its anything like my strimmers will last years. or go for a echo both better built than the sthil
  2. get yourself blackthorn, hawthorn purging buckthorn mix can get 90to 120cm whips plant 6 to mtr staggard rows. this will give you a instant nasty hedge. do not say whereabouts you are murrey mcclean abingdon mill tree farms winchester. give them a couple of seasons and your have a thick hedge. just give it a trim top and sides after first year to make it grow out sideways not go up wards. onc that hedge is there lay your roadside hedge to make two barriers. no one likes trying to get over any thorn and if they do put something over blackthorn will go through chainsaw trousers so a hessian sack is no barrier. and it will also stop reynard coming for his tea
  3. thats the trouble they follow arb trucks and related see were yo go to at night come back reccy joint then come back mob handed. so change route do a detour stop at some high security site. check around if any one is looking then go home. its a pain but if you go weird routes then it makes it harder to find your yard.
  4. +1 used one on some big jobs removing screws never failed. now got one of my own and its cracking Axminster were doing a good deal on them
  5. VOSA have outsourced the work to contractors hence on the prowl. they are just finishing building a new centre and weighbridge just off J10 of M3. and have stopped a thatcher for having no taco fitted to truck. had to now get a jeep to do work. so watch out that will be on there hit list soon no taco fitted to trucks with trailer attached. £1000 fine. talk about getting money out of small business.
  6. Forest and arb do it in 25ltrs i paid £45 for a drum
  7. with all that they have none of them can get it right. i look at about 5 different ones and about same forecast but on day not what they predicted. only one which is not bad is a local guy who is not bad with is forecasts
  8. well the contest is ON so if any of you who are localish like to come more than welcome. have some of the top cutters in the uk entered so should be a good contest. starts 9.30am to 3.30pm refresments will be available all day. Hampshire Hedgelaying Championships.pdf
  9. Get hold of NHLS and look up contractors in your area. and get one of them to help you out laying it and learn at the same time. hedgelaying is done by the mtr depending on size of stems in hedge and style never do it on a day rate. but do not try and do it it may look simple but hawthorn like any thorn if its getting on will snap off if the pleaches are not done correctly. if you need any more help please pm me and will put you in touch with a local cutter. PLEASE get hold of a NHLS member they are experianced cutters and those who do training do a training course to be a trainer. you will learn more from one of our members than any voly group. i have not heard good reports re training given by some volenteer groups.
  10. i have general grabbers on nissan same size £400 from micheldever tyres winchester and that was fitted. i believe they own hi q
  11. been using saw in coppice for last two days and each night cracking headache. the time has come that i go back to aspen in saws the stink and smell from normal 2 stroke is to much can not take it any more. going to get 2 cans tomorrow and run the saw on aspen. only reason went back to normal was petrol was cheap but is it worth breathing the toxic fumes from 2 stroke. no its not
  12. problem with imports is what is going to come in on this wood. we had DED sudden oak ash die back what next if we allow are biosecurity to be nil. coppicers are being pushed out of work due to imported hurdles and spars. are rubbish but cheap. its got to stop. and only timber imported is treated timber. same with trees use home grown not imported rant over
  13. dolmar have been around a very long time. did have some without chainguards. at one time that was all that was sold by the agriculture dealers or solo. never saw a sthil or husky before the arb shops came about. other make was oleo mac very good saws. that makes me old. and when scats was a agricuture store not a country hoora store. or should i say mole valley farmers now. thats when ford 4000 were about. at Curtis and padwicks winchester proper agricuture shop not only sold tractors but everthing you need for a farm. if there was a local dealer like to see the new dolmar but nearest is over in west sussex to far. hence not got a foot hold. mitox seem to be sold more and more.
  14. found a gill dingy smock total waterproof neoprene neck and cuffs Gill Dinghy Top Gill Dinghy Top £49.95 inc. VAT (EUR 63.39) from marine superstore .com plus postage has a small zip in top so easy to pull off and lightweight.
  15. started watching fantastic friend does old aircraft up for a living. and has just got his examiner certificate for airworthiness on chipmunks. so he gets to ride in them. but he has done spitfires hurricanes up. clever chap
  16. i doubt if warrenty would stand if not purchased in the uk as its a grey import and a uk dealer could say they would not fix it FOC unless husky agreed to foot the bill. you may then find that if it did go wrong big time having to send it back at your cost to have fixed or replaced. get a echo top handle.
  17. country covers do very good falkland waterproof trousers. but £100 for a pair but made for shooting and beating so will take the knocks
  18. no contest now izuzu now have the utitility in the uk so you can wash it out no cloth seats. and heard toyota not as good as its old stable ones. plus price difference between two can get a izuzu for £16k doubt if you get a base toyota for under 22k. and as you say it pulls 3.5 tonne. and can have fitted a taco as part of deal which is worth 2k in its own right. soon need one when pulling trailers. so get it fitted when buying truck
  19. i looked out of doors at 8am and started to rain went back indoors and stayed here all day done paperwork but rather be working. now going tomorrow to thin a ash plantation going to get wet even if its dry overhead. and heavy showers forecast for tomorrow. can not complain had it good
  20. i have the older smaller model and the Z420 model ride on use both as mulchers. on the big one never had to resort to fitting a collector does a cracking job mulching. yes if grass is wet it does leave a small amount of clippings so a collector would help. as for smaller one makes a cracking job in mulching mode if grass is damp then put collector on. but majority of time is grass is kept short no need for it looking at getting the titan ride on with a 5ft cut so i can speed cutting up on larger areas. downside on them yes drive on smaller one ok but belt may be getting worn. on big one front tyres going flat now has solids so that problem solved. but that's minor compared to the good things good on fuel even though petrol. see if pic download of jobs done with the Z since this picture was taken moss has gone so has the thatch now have 90% grass.
  21. i am touching wood as i type as doing a hedge and my mate is giving me the willies re nests in hedges. can not stand wasps let alone a hornets nest. as for seeing any this year none unlike last year kept coming indoors when it got dark not fun
  22. +1 i doubt if the insurers would want any volunteer operating a saw would have to be someone who is a nominated person with relevant cetificates. on the insurance certificate. do not know much about volunteers but what i have come across normally only one or two people use mechanical machines eg chainsaws brushcutters due to the no fee no win culture someone getting hurt. so they would have to use handsaws. and loppers
  23. Forest and arb winchester doing some good deals on them. i find them so comfey still on my feet and waterproof heavy rain today and dry feet bliss. wish they came out earlier but worth the wait,
  24. i use pico chain on my MS170 as it came with it cracking for what i am doing pleaching stems on hedges. never had a issue with the chains in fact first one is just worn out so new one gone on. cuts very well nice and thin which i want unlike normal chain which cuts a bit thick. if what i think you want it for doing smaller stem stuff then the pico is a good chain. just needs looking after does go blunt quicker than normal chain. so maybe not such a good idear for volunteers.
  25. just got a pair of stein wearwolfs for hedgelaying and coppicing so comfy. yes there climbing boots but good for what i do can bend down with them without the toetector digging in. and are chainsaw boots.
