I actually don't get it either! As for offence etc, Hodge seems a decent enough chap but I'm personally tired of people taking offence on behalf of others.

This will have been what you spotted, albeit this one has skyline set up also. High leading is actually fairly fast way of getting timber off a short slope, setting up a skyline is different matter. particularly one like attached image where the skyline is tightened by tirfor winch and tractor jacked up with drum on wheel winding it in once finished. It does sound slightly like a scam, particularly if identikit text but with certain words changed is being circulated. That is hallmark of scammers. I'm in Lebanon just now, the people there think Europe has an insane immigration policy.

‘Nobody wants the countryside closed down’ - Telegraph Interesting and only comment I could add would be regarding the woodland trust banging on about planting native trees, I'm no expert but to my mind the aim should be to achieve maximum amenity, biodiversity and value; ruling out non native immediately limits that. For example where Sequoia has been planted on the old estates there are fantastic specimen trees, if WT get their way those and similar species will disappear from UK and I don't really understand why they would want that.

I disagree TCD, my objection to the EU is not the ability to trade freely but the political side of "ever closer union" that goes with it and the loss of national sovereignty. Free trade is what generates wealth for all, I buy British (and local) where I can but the days of protectionism are long gone. I do agree with County's point re FC (and associated bodies) planting garbage, a comparison between UK and continental Europe woodland is absolutely staggering. From our unthinned choked softwood mess to planting worthless rubbish the lack of vision combined with incompetence simply beggars belief. No wonder the FC are desperately scrabbling around to reinvent themselves to try and keep themselves relevant, it's been proven over decades they are simply incapable of their fulfilling their remit.. Managing the nation's woodland.

There's plenty of whisky without peat, there's actually far less of the smoky ones produced compared to non smoky

Last month I saw tons of the stuff dockside both Estonia and Latvia. Slightly different note - last week I saw tons and tons of beech in Slovakia, it wasn't the best quality for milling so presumably gong for firewood also.

Given the incessant (and I mean incessant) rain during 2015 in this part of world I wouldn't be surprised if moisture level of even kiln dried wood is going up. If she's such a serious wood burner though why does she not get stock in and season herself.. Like the people all over Europe who heat their homes with wood. It's a peculiar UK thing that all wood must be delivered bone dry, a reflection of our urbanised society probably.

Total anarchy, not sure where it will all end but a good start would be water cannon on those attacking lorries, don't really understand why authorities don't come down hard on that behaviour

in my experience the prices quoted weren't correct, even chipwood at roadside was £20 plus, substantially more last year but came back quite a bit this year due to strong £ against euro. Still above £20 though. Sawlogs were £30 plus at roadside, spruce logs even more

I think the 4000 winch head should bolt straight onto the standard igland mounting, think it's same fittings for all that era of winches - 3000 through to 8000. Something else you can do when hi leading is to put oil on haul back brake but once you start doing this you always need to do it. Edit: There's also a drum of skyline cable lying in yard, it's been oiled so still in reasonable condition. Running it out and tightening up with tirfor is a faff compared to powered skyline drum but once you get into routine it doesn't take too long, you'll need trewella (spelling?) and triangle though.You can run this setup with just normal carriage (or pulleys bolted together), it doesn't need to be a locking carriage. Again though you need to use haul back brake to keep load up though with experience you easily get knack of just enough brake to keep butts up and then more applied to clear hazards, the bing etc. -
Ok interesting. One would hope that as result of current and forecasted shortages of all timber we'll see the FC or one of the other quangos actually start planting with a view to addressing said shortages. I'm not holding my breath though.

Key thing is height so put pulley as high up the spar as possible and I assume you've got a tower to bolt onto the winch too? Never really heard of 3000's being used for hi lead, was usually 4000's. There's a couple of 4000s with extended drums along with towers lying in yard, ford mountings but been a good few years since they've been worked. -
