  1. Doing softwood from logdeck is fantastic, substantial production increase and absolute joy to work - no more wrestling bent bits through at all angles. One issue with the pickup and axe brigade is they depress the prices as it's a sideline and fair enough they can't service all the market, there's a lot of them though and all they need is a chainsaw (some of them use trailer on car) and they're a firewood merchant. Another issue is the fast processor, log deck, handling etc all add up to substantial investment for what is ultimately a seasonal market. Also farmers get diversification grants to purchase the above so you have them to compete with too.
  2. Like the open design so easier for bendy stuff, not so sure about the hunching over to watch saw action - noticed that on one of their other videos too. Log deck possibly needs slight design tweak to allow timber easier access to conveyor
  3. The logs are cut to sawmill's specification and quality requirements, if they were hauling timber to mill and it wasn't millable quality then they'll simply reject load, not pick through it. I think softwood use is perhaps increasing due to lack of/price of hardwood and increasing consumer awareness that it's perfectly good firewood.
  4. £300 to £500 was what I was quoted for simple three pager. One chaps quoted £850 but halved than when told him it was too expensive for what I needed
  5. They don't know the weight of the bit wood you're sticking them into though. I assumed they worked on basis of resistance between pins when compared to the control measure (100% moisture?)
  6. To be fair you're always going to get mess like that when running on wet soil with no brash, without the band tracks it would struggle to get through Edit: looks a mess at moment but within few months will be totally overgrown
  7. Booker is consistent in his antipathy for the greens and has touched on this a few times, latest article below being typical and has bit about burning biomass. I have read about rainforest being burnt for palm oil planting in few other publications too http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/11718550/Why-are-greens-so-keen-to-destroy-the-worlds-wildlife.html
  8. For circa 100t could tractor and winch do the job? Cut it slightly longer to 3.7m/4.9m or maybe even pole length? What market is there for softwood down your way?
  9. If you come off the brashmat and the ground's soft then you're going to track it anyway unfortunately, while the chains do bite in and break surface they reduce wheelspin which helps mitigate that.
  10. A set of wheel chains makes huge difference, stops all the slipping/sliding and amazing where you can go
  11. Second World War tank and anti-aircraft gun found hidden in basement of villa in Germany - Telegraph Liked the bit about chap taking it out for a run in heavy snow
  12. Merely sharing today's news which is related to the ops post, not sure why you're being tetchy.
  13. Couldn't be arsed, besides people can draw their own conclusions without any input from me

  15. I'm unclear on how sourcing your news from one website really helps you find the "real truth". And a quick skim read of the website you highlighted suggests it's not the most impartial either

  17. Well spotted Steve, I will read that section
  18. I woke up absolutely running with sweat and feeling hellish, I suspected straight away what problem was and Google truly was my friend. Got a bollocking off missus for not waking her, with hindset not waking her and not seeking medical help wasn't best idea. On separate note is it worth one of the mods creating a health section and moving threads like Lyme disease into it? Edit out all the non posts leaving purely images and advice from people such as Katie Fox medic, perhaps she'd write up tips on heatstroke also and other common ailments from working in outdoors. Ten minutes spent reading it could be invaluable
  19. I got heatstroke after snorkelling all day in hot sun, waking up very unwell and googling symptoms was a scary experience. Luckily had big bottle water in fridge and spent next couple hours sipping water on balcony outside where thankfully there was cold wind. I probably should have sought medical help though
  20. 560 is a big greedy saw for thinnings, that's where a 550 would've came into its own
  21. Luxury supercar fleet seized at Welsh travellers camp - Telegraph
  22. 3m softwood pricing is actually consistent up here, simply relates to how far from the chip and pulp producers in central belt you're located Edit: I do think hardwood prices may come down a bit.. Though we don't have many sources of decent processor grade here
  23. Flying 5ft circular saw tears through Chinese man's car on motorway - Telegraph
  24. Spotted this at JCC during week, looked a handy bit of kit
  25. If the OP had said something along lines of "I've got couple elm trunks and I want £500 each" then I'd see your point. Instead he asked "any idea what they're worth", so there was really no need to go off on a irrelevant rant. One of the benefits of arbtalk is it's a medium to exchange information, share resources and seek advice. That's what the op was doing
